Father of Michael Douglas the legendary actor passes. I'm Spartacus !!!
But he was much more than Spartacus...

Kirk Douglas, Hollywood legend, dies at 103

Oscar-winning actor Kirk Douglas has died aged 103.

The stage and screen actor was well-known for a range of roles, including the 1960 classic Spartacus, in which he played the titular character.
Born in New York in 1916, he rose to prominence during Hollywood's "golden age", earning his first Oscar nomination for the 1949 boxing story Champion.
He was also the father of Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas.

Michael said in a statement: "It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today."
"To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies... but to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad," it read in part.
"Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad - I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son."

Kirk Douglas was prolific as a film actor, with more than 90 credits to his name - ranging over six decades from the 1940s to the 2000s.
He is perhaps best-known as Spartacus, a Stanley Kubrick film which won four Oscars and was so popular that its iconic "I am Spartacus" scene entered the pop culture lexicon.
Douglas was himself nominated for an Oscar three times - for Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Lust for Life (1956). He eventually won the honorary award in 1996 in recognition of his 50 years in the industry.

There's one in every crowd.

Why not let his body cool down to room temperature, and maybe even wait a day or two before bringing up his faults and sins?

Kirk was a talented actor who took on risky but rewarding roles early in his career.

He set Stanley Kubrick on a run of classics with Paths of Glory. The script to Spartacus had been complete for two years but they didn't have a director, Kirk said to the producers, "why don't you hire Kubrick, he's a talented son of a bitch".

Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor playing Paul Gauguin in Lust for Life - Kirk should have won one as well.

His dark side is he made Jean Simmons swimming naked in
Spartacus. The footage showing the naughty bits was kept
for his own pleasure.

The last actor from the glory days of Hollywood. The Swimmer isn't one of his better known films but it's the one that comes to mind whenever his name is mentioned. Few films have affected me as much as this one. Time to watch it again.

That's Burt Lancaster in the starring role in The Swimmer, an excellent movie and amazing actor.

I remember first seeing Spartacus with my father, I was very young at the time but my dad and mom though that it would be okay to watch. It was on an old console Zenith TV with the fake wood grain that you had to turn the dials for channel and volume. I was mesmerized and didn't leave my spot until the end of the movie. My love for movies grew more and more from that day on. I always loved Kirk Douglas movies he had that style to him that was unique.

In some way we are all Spartacus.

Kubrick didn't have the luxury of CGI while shooting Spartacus. To this day I find the Roman Legions formation at the end of the film astonishing - to get that many extras to work as one.

Here's some trivia for you. Kirk may have won the Best Actor Oscar in 1957, if he had worked for Lancaster's Production Company on Gunfight at the OK Corral and Separate Tables. Kirk chose the money instead to make The Vikings - Ernest Borgnine played Ragnar Lothbrok. David Niven went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for Separate Tables.

Kirk Douglas bought the rights to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1962 hoping desperately to play McMurphy on film as he was already playing the role on broadway. The subject matter was deemed to "dark" for studios in the 60's and the Vietnam war raging on.

Eventually, his son whom we all know, Michael, ended up with the film rights and he brought on the great Saul Zaents as producer. Zaents & Douglas then hired Maestro Milos Forman as Director (Zaents & Forman later won Oscars for "Amadeus" as well) and Jack Nicholson turned McMurphy into an icon of anti establishment angst. A monumental performance if ever there was.

Although Kirk never got to act in the film, his tenacity made "Cuckoo's Nest" a classic.
