Lack of culture in Canada and the USA?

Someone touched on this in another thread. He mentioned some of his non-Canadian girlfriends were multilingual and quite cultured. I've noticed this with both men and women too I've met going through life too. Why is it that Canadians are so bad at improving themselves or learning in general. Sure they go to university for a degree but most of them time it's just to get a good job in a white collar role not because they love what they do.

You meet Europeans and they are multilingual and very curious about learning but that's lacking where. Is it the schools that are failing our children or they are just the product of dumb uncultured parents. Is it a case of the Apple doesn't fall far from the tree?

Interesting question.

First off, I will say that Canadians are much more worldly than Americans.

However, seeing as the US has been the cultural centre of the world for most of the 20th century (movies, media, music {jazz, blues, pop, rock 'n roll, rap}, fashion trends, literature, economics/commerce) more so than any other single country, kind of forces people from other countries to follow American trends more than vice versa. If being cultured means knowing more languages, appreciating the arts etc., people living in Europe are exposed to more of these things simply because of their geographical proximity to so many different countries, not necessarily because of a better system of education. N. America has probably advanced science more than any other culture in the last 100 years. That does not come from a lousy education system. Do they know as much about Africa and S. America as they do about N. America? I suspect not, because those places have not made as many contributions to advancing the world. Those cultures have not been at the forefront as much as N.A. has.

How do you validate the statement of people from other countries not going to university to establish a career more than in N. American? Any numbers to back that up or just anecdotal? Most likely you come into contact with multifold more N. Americans than other peoples with which to base your opinion which may skew that opinion.

I could write lots more but there's too many factors to consider. Regardless, I'm not saying that you are right or wrong but this opinion seems rather subjective.

Well, seeing as how an extremely large portion of Canadians are immigrants, or only first generation Canadians with immigrant parents, and thus are already multilingual, I question the entire premise of your argument.
Most people I know speak at least two languages if not three. I mean French is required learning until mid high school.

I think its the fact that Americans are just so variable...and extreme. As brilliant as they come; as dumb as they come. The most worldly, the least worldly. A subsegment though of American society who are uber aggressively ignorant though, unlike anything seen in Oz or what i've noticed in Canada or Britain.

The intellectual quality of your singular response stands in stark contrast to that of the other respondents. BTW, in case it eludes you, you were the only one who's post was sorely lacking in substance. Maybe stick your conspiracy theories.

Define cultured, I really don't understand your question.
Canada, just like America, is a nation built on immigration, it has a very short history compared to other countries in Europe/Asia.

There are no real roots, that all Canadians can fall back on. Everyone came from somewhere at some point besides natives.

Canadian culture is always shifting because it's people keep changing.
This could be a good thing or a bad thing, but I'm not here to discuss that.

Very insightful and perfectly well said.

Although it will be lost on him. Conspiracy theorists all think they are so much smarter than those who miss out on the complex conspiracy. They literally can’t understand how ridiculous they appear. Ever since I watched a YouTube “schizophrenia simulator” I have gained insight and empathy into those with mental health problems.

Canadian and American culture is superior to European cultures. We have no desire to demote ourselves to the level of the Old World. Thanks.
