many in this province are on their third CERB July will be the last how long will this keep up as Jamaican barbers, immigrants, working poor, women, single parents, the disabled, people of colour, first nations continue to sink into poverty, evictions and starvation as jobs, livelihoods and businesses destroyed

TORONTO -- Ontario Premier Doug Ford wants the province's state of emergency to be extended another 28 days.

The state of emergency, which was set to expire on June 2, will be extended until June 30 if the motion is passed on Tuesday at Queen's Park.

The province declared a state of emergency on March 17 as the number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario continued to climb.

ncluded under the province's state of emergency are a number of emergency orders. The emergency orders include restrictions on social gathering limits.

On Monday, Ford said his government is "aggressively" working on a plan to continue reopening the economy.

"If numbers go down, we'll be looking at other stages," Ford said. "I want to get the economy going but we have to do it safely."

Ontario entered the first phase of the reopening plan on May 19. A number of businesses, including those with a street-front enterance were allowed to reopen.

The province was hoping to make an announcement on allowing larger social gatherings last month but said it was due to an uptick in cases.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Christine Elliott said the province "still needs to go some distance" before moving to stage two of the reopening plan.

"We need to take a careful and measured approached based on four factors: the number of new cases needs to go down, make sure that we have sufficient capacity in our hospitals, make sure we're doing adequate testing and we need to do contact tracing with public health units."

On March 17, when the state of emergency began, there were 190 cases of COVID-19 in the province. On Monday, the province recorded another spike in COVID-19 cases. More than 400 new infections were reported, bringing the provincial total to 28,263.

What happens when the Canada Emergency Response Benefit runs out?

After four months of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, CERB payments will stop, but eligible individuals could be switched-over to standard EI if they are still out of work.

The Government of Canada said individuals on the CERB retain their eligibility to receive EI after they stop receiving the CERB, and the period that someone received the CERB does not impact their EI entitlement.

Thats a mistake. Hope all these elected officials playing with peoples livelihoods get booted from office when the time comes. Its easy to say lets just shut down for another month no biggie -shrugs- when your salary is guaranteed and your up cozy at the cottage making cheesecake. These politicians are so out of touch. Im not even badly affected by the lockdown as its another month to watch Netflix and relax but I know people are hurting badly. Will be writing Dougie and voting for his opponent next election if this bullshit continues.

I thought they just extended it from June 2 to June 9, and now they are extending it again from June 2 to June 30?
Unless there has been a surge in ICU usage, this is totally ridiculous.

The number of new known cases is a fucked up metric here.
Yesterday the number of new known cases went up around 25%, plus this is even a much larger deviation because the number of tests went down around 20%.
These results are totally useless in terms of dictating policy.

I think some people are thinking that CERB should become a permanent universal minimum income.

This cure is already way worse than the virus.

Ford has no concrete plan when it comes to reopening. He can’t even cut and paste the Quebec solution. Ford is clueless

Amid calls for provincial moratorium on commercial evictions, Premier Doug Ford says he doesn't understand why properties sit vacant
For two months, Premier Doug Ford has resisted calls from small business owners, politicians and industry associations to invoke a commercial evictions moratorium in Ontario.
Instead, Ford has chastised Ontario landlords who have evicted commercial tenants during the pandemic, calling them “vicious” and imploring them to “have a heart.”

B.C. bans commercial landlords who forgo federal rent relief from evicting tenants
Emergency order is meant to protect small businesses during COVID-19, finance minister says.
Landlords in B.C. who are eligible for emergency federal rent relief and choose not to apply will not be able to evict businesses that aren't able to pay rent, B.C. Finance Minister Carole James announced Monday.
The emergency order restricts lease terminations, rent-repayment lawsuits, and repossession of goods and properties, and will stay in place until the end of June, when the federal relief program is currently set to end.

The numbers are up becuase they are retesting the LTCH's once more.

Without the LTCH's the number of tests being carried out is low.

What a sham of a Goverment we have in Ontario.

Actually a large # of the positives were from migrant farmworkers at an asparagus farm in south western Ontario.

Workers forget to isolate upon arrival in Canada?
Actually the owner of the farm rented a hotel for like over 500k to isolate the workers when they arrived from Mexico but even after when they went to the farm it somehow spread and many got sick.

GTA & Thereabouts...
COVID testing is a debacle and the medical experts are guessing. Poor data leads to poor modelling and decisions. No leader would have a chance. When CERB runs out, the people will be gunning for Ford.

What we need to do as citizens is stage a mass demonstration in front of Queen's Park. Tell Doug Ford to give masks to everyone and open everything up.

I will decide when my state of emergency is over and that will be when there is a safe vaccine or safe proven treatment. I won't follow the province's order.

Ford is stuck in the past waiting on the number of new cases to fall below 200 before moving forward, soon as that happens the kids will go back to school and the number of cases will rise once more, then what is cheesecake eating Ford going to do

BC had 24 new cases the other day and they claim they are not out of the woods...,

Canada’s politicians are screwed in the head

Agreed, masks for everyone, let’s move forward

Today there were 446 new known cases.
Without a consistent sampling methodology, these numbers are totally useless.

start watching this from 4:30 a lady who new Ford sicne she was 4 years old said there is a medical/scientific report published on April 12 saying covid19 does not affect healthy immune tissue and this report was given to the Doug Ford pc government.

Queen’s Park protest #6: Once again, hundreds gathered on the lawns of the Ontario Legislature in Toronto. They justifiably wanted to know why other economies the world over are fully opening up, but in Ontario – the province that Doug Ford proclaimed as being “Open for Business” – is seemingly regressing.

Case in point: just two days prior to the protest, Peter Berbatiotis was making a delivery in his Toronto Softee ice-cream truck… and got nailed with a ticket by bylaw. Talk about The Grinch Who Stole Summertime!

But why? Isn’t curbside delivery allowed now? And that is the house specialty of a mobile ice cream truck. But no. Apparently, according to both the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto, this is a “grey area.” And while the bureaucrats mull over the 50 million shades of grey inherent to their Wuhan virus red tape, Mr. Berbatiotis will be dishing out the green to the Pandemic Police.

Another case in point: Jason Lake, the owner of the Minden 50s Diner. He opened up his diner on Friday in order to – horrors! – cater to a few sit-down customers at his restaurant. That didn’t last long. A SWAT team of law enforcement descended upon the diner, informing Lake to shutter the joint immediately or face a fine of $500,000!

And yet, consider Portugal. This European nation is reopening its economy. In a few days, even its beaches will welcome back tourists (remember them?) But in Ontario, Doug “Not Quite Open For Business Yet” Ford has cancelled summer camp.

While Premier Ford claims he wants to open the economy more-so than anyone else, he says he is beholden to medical and scientific advice and besides, he’s worried about that “second wave” of the Wuhan virus. Translation: if you’re pining for a haircut or manicure, tough luck, Ontarians. You’re stuck in hippy mode for the foreseeable future.

Little wonder there was such frustration in the air at the protest. Small businesses are suffering. And many more are not coming back when the “old normal” returns (whenever that is.)

And as Ontarians vent, Premier Ford… bakes cherry cheesecake?

Disgraceful.

In the speech from the throne room today Ford says the extension to the SOE does not mean stage 2 has been delayed to the start of July

Only time will tell how much cheesecake he will be eating when Stage 2 finally starts.
