Twitter labeled Trump tweets with a fact check for the first time
By Brian Fung, CNN Business

Updated 6:57 PM ET, Tue May 26, 2020

Washington (CNN Business)For the first time, Twitter has labeled a tweet from President Donald Trump as misleading.

On Tuesday, the social media company highlighted two of Trump's tweets that falsely claimed mail-in ballots would lead to widespread voter fraud.

"Get the facts about mail-in ballots," read a message beneath each tweet. It linked to a fact-check page the platform had created filled with further links and summaries of news articles debunking the assertion.

Twitter said the move was aimed at providing "context" around Trump's remarks. But Twitter's unprecedented decision is likely to raise further questions about its willingness to consistently apply the label to other Trump tweets that have been deemed misleading by third parties, particularly as the president has lobbed baseless allegations against former Rep. Joe Scarborough regarding the death of a congressional staffer years ago.

When asked by CNN's Dana Bash on Tuesday about whether social media companies should take action against Trump for pushing conspiracy theories that a critic committed murder, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said: "I'm of the view that social media companies have to reexamine whether or not — for example, if you put something out saying that — that same outlandish thing that the president thinks ... they should say it's not true."

Twitter said Tuesday that Trump's tweets about mail-in voting did not violate the company's rules because they don't explicitly discourage people from voting. But, the company said, the label offers context surrounding Trump's claims.

"These Tweets contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labeled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots," Twitter spokesperson Katie Rosborough told CNN Business in an email. "This decision is in line with the approach we shared earlier this month."
Rosborough confirmed that this marks the first instances in which Twitter has labeled any Trump tweet as misleading.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Twitter did not immediately respond to questions about who assembled the fact-checking page or whether it was algorithmically generated.

Trump accuses Twitter of 'stifling' free speech after fact-check

President Trump on Tuesday evening accused Twitter of “stifling FREE SPEECH” and interfering in the 2020 election by fact-checking one of his tweets on the issue of voting by mail.

“@Twitter is now interfering in the 2020 Presidential Election. They are saying my statement on Mail-In Ballots, which will lead to massive corruption and fraud, is incorrect, based on fact-checking by Fake News CNN and the Amazon Washington Post,” the president tweeted Tuesday evening. “Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen!

The social media site placed a warning on two of Trump’s tweets for the first time earlier in the day, noting that his claim that California would send mail-in ballots to anyone living in the state was false and that mail-in ballots are already in use in several states, including Oregon, Utah and Nebraska. Trump himself also voted by mail in the Florida Republican primary this year.

"These Tweets contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labeled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots," a Twitter spokesperson told The Hill.

President Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale had previously condemned the addition of the fact-check, saying in a statement “Partnering with the biased fake news media 'fact checkers' is only a smoke screen Twitter is using to try to lend their obvious political tactics some false credibility.”

This is ridiculous.

What next? Can't grab pussies? Can't lust after your daughter? Can't surround yourself with neo-Nazis and white supremacists? Can't conspire with Eastern European countries to help fix a little election or dig up dirt on your opponent? Can't pardon your buddies after they're been convicted and jailed? Can't get pissed on by Russian prostitutes?

They're taking away our freedoms!

ROFLMAO!!!!! For three years no comment on Twitter about the Russia investigation was outlandish enough to warrant a warning. No conspiracy theory too idiotic to qualify for "fact check". Now that Trump's on the verge of winning the second term, it's panic time. LOL!!!! I especially enjoyed the linking of "fact checking" to the CNN and WaPo.

How?

Mail in ballots are rarely linked to voter fraud. This remains true.
The link goes to a story about absentee ballots being used in a rare case of election fraud.

I guess I fail to see a substantial difference. I know you have to request an absentee ballot which is one control step. The sheer volume of mailing out ballots to every register voter creates more risk and less ability to control and validate.

Even so, there is another thread that details a Republican fraud with mail-in ballots. I'm not sure that some of our more impressionable members understand that helps make Trump's point.

It doesn't make Trump's point, all it does is show that despite how long mail in ballots have been happening the amounts of fraud previously are miniscule.

We know voter fraud exists. We know there have been cases of fraud related to ballots that were mailed in. You have posted news stories reporting such.

Regardless, Twitter is in a dubious position because they are acting as an editor. Politicians shouldn't be screened for making claims about the future rhetorical or not. You would have to screen every claim made my a politician. "Tax cuts will pay for themselves with economic growth." "Obamacare will drive down the cost of healthcare."

You don't have to believe it. I don't have to believe it. Twitter doesn't have to believe it. Twitter can become a publisher and publish their own editorial content.

The Republicans need to keep voters from voting in order to stay in power. So many states use so many different methods to keep dems and minorities from voting that mail in votes would bypass and as Trump admitted, keep the GOP out of power forever. They can't win without cheating anymore.

Trump keeps digging in deeper against the protesters and supporting violence against him.
Sounds like he's actually getting afraid sitting in the WH now.

The professionally managed so-called “protesters” at the White House had little to do with the memory of George Floyd. They were just there to cause trouble. The
@SecretService
handled them easily. Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???

Great job last night at the White House by the U.S.

As I have said many times, I have lived in several integrated wards in U.S. cities. I have stood in line with African-Americans and I have never had difficulty voting. Didn't matter red state or blue state.

Instead of the Canadian chorus singing back-up here for Democrats, why don't you tell us what works and doesn't work in Canada.

Trump is beginning to post like the bozos here on Terb, that scream "free speech" as soon as somebody challenges them.
Leftists hate free speech because they will never win if it's allowed. Their only chance is to shut up the opposition. The fact that they don't care that this is unjust just exposes their lack of integrity. Fortunately people are starting to notice the danger to free speech, pissing off many with the left. I predict a landslide victory for Trump in the election.

I think part of the problem is you elect too many people to positions that we just hire for. Especially judges and DA's but even county clerk's and the like.

Federal and provincial we vote for our rep.

Municipally Mayor, Councillor, School Board.

And that's it. Yours extends pages.

You should start a protest here for free speech.
Cuz you know that you'll be banned if you say something offensive.

Walk the talk.
