I think I've confused the fuck out of myself so please bear with me on this request for assistance...

I have rogers cable internet connected to a rogers modem which doubles as a router. From the modem/router multiple ethernet cables expand through my place. One of these ethernet cables is connected to my PC and shows up as a LAN private network on my PC. I have no internet connection problems. I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard with built-in Killer E2200 gigabit ethernet controller.

My laptop is connected to the rogers modem/router via WIFI. I don't want to connect via ethernet cable because I move around a lot with my laptop. I have no internet connection problems.

I want to set up a network where I can share folders/files between my PC and my laptop without hardwiring the two together. I've watched a bunch of YouTube videos on how to set up a shared network but I can't get my laptop to detect my PC. I'm thinking it's because my laptop is connected via WIFI to the modem/router but my PC is connected directly to the modem/router via ethernet cable (the name of the network my laptop connects to doesn't even show up on my PC; my PC network settings simply say LAN private network and there's no ability to detect WIFI networks--I'm assuming because my PC doesn't have built-in WIFI capability?).

I'm prepared to buy a wireless adaptor for my PC but before I do am I missing something obvious? I'm thinking I need WIFI capability on my PC to connect to the same WIFI network my laptop is connecting to, and thereby enabling me to share files/folders across the WIFI network between PC and laptop. But I may have confused the shit out of myself and might be missing something obvious.

Can anyone help?

If both devices are on the same LAN they have the ability to communicate through the router using their LOCAL IP addresses, typically 192.168.X.X , in fact you don't even need to be connected to the internet. If only one device is used as you say, the modem/router, the broadcast for the wireless signal will typically be on the same network.
It does not matter whether the devices are connected through an ethernet cable or wifi. What matters is that they are on the same local network.

Given you are using windows on both devices, a quick and easy way to check this is by going on each device and opening up the command prompt (search CMD) and typing "ipconfig".

The computer on a wired connection you will want to look for the "Ethernet adapter Ethernet" heading while on your laptop "Wireless LAN adapter over Wi-Fi:" the exact headings may differ but only the interfaces that are in use will be propagated, in this particular scenario I'm guessing only one on each device.

Ensure the default gateway on each device matches, this will determine if they are on the same network. That is the IP of your router you can type it in your web browser to configure it or change admin settings.

It's likely a problem with how you are configuring the file sharing on Windows 10, there are a few different ways.

Here is an extensive guide:

I just did this and it’s super easy once I solved the main problem which was firewall or some type of security setting my antivirus software had enabled (kaspersky) which prevented me from seeing the shared drive on the other computer.

If you can’t see the shared drive just search it in YouTube. There is an additional 3 step process to do as well if you are having further issues. However video above is good.

That looks like the issue.

My laptop's Wireless LAN adapter over Wi-Fi is default gateway 192.168.1.1

My PC's Ethernet Adaptor LAN default gateway is 192.168.0.1 (below that it lists Ethernet adapter LAN Connection* 2: and says Media disconnected--not sure what that means)

EDIT:

Okay, I've got them both on the same default gateway now (192.168.0.1). Gunna try sharing again and see what happens...

EDIT 2:

Seriously guys, YOU ROCK! Followed the instructions on the YouTube and worked like a charm! I'm all set up and good to go.

Greatly appreciate the help! TERB to the rescue!!
