The two men accused of fatally shotgunning unarmed jogger Ahmaud Arbery told police they believed he was a suspect in a recent string of break-ins — but no such crimes were reported to cops in the weeks leading up to the fatal shooting.

Glynn County Police Lt. Cheri Bashlor told CNN there was only one local automobile burglary reported on Jan. 1, when someone had stolen a firearm from an unlocked truck outside the McMichaels’ home back on Jan 1.

Gregory McMichael, 64, and his 34-year-old son, Travis, were arrested Thursday and face charges for murder and aggravated assault after the death of Arbery was caught on camera, horrifying Americans across the country.

S. Lee Merritt, a lawyer for Arbery’s family, earlier this week called the shooting death a “modern lynching” by a pair of vigilantes. Arbery was black; the McMichaels are white.

“I just want justice for my son,” Arbery’s father, Marcus Arbery Sr., told CNN Friday. “I just want them to pay the price for the crime they did.”

Arbery, 25, was jogging in a white neighborhood just outside of Brunswick, Georgia, when police believe the father and son chased him down and fatally shot him.

The video shows the father and son approach Arbery in their pickup truck. Travis can be seen getting out of the truck and scuffling with Arbery, who is eventually struck with a shotgun blast. He staggers a few feet and falls to the ground.

President Donald Trump told Fox News Friday that he watched the video of Arbery’s killing and found it “very disturbing.”

“It’s a very disturbing situation to me and my heart goes out to the parents and the family and the friends … It’s heartbreaking and it’s very rough, rough stuff,” he said.

Now reports that McMichael was close to the DA's office in that small GA town and the DA attempted to block any investigation or charges being laid.

This is going to wreck a few careers.

Also IIRC, that McMichael Sr had assisted the DA in investigating A for a weapons offence when A was a juve a few years ago. Sounds like a history here.

Neighbor of father and son arrested in Ahmaud Arbery killing is also under investigation
The investigation into the fatal shooting in Brunswick, Georgia, will also look at a neighbor of suspects Gregory and Travis McMichael who recorded video of the incident, authorities said.

Seems more and more you can catch video of straight up murders. Sad.

If given due process and convicted these two should be penalised to the full extent of the law.

I'm a death penalty advocate and if it's applicable here then have it.

You can't vigilantes going about killing people regardless of colour.

Let's see how the facts play out here.

There are many like this in the USA. It is no secret to those who live it day in day out. You know, the people who others tell that they are lying and

Technology is bringing that truth serum though. Were it not for it, this would be one of those swept under a rug events taking place in the USA ever since the abolition. That Chappelle stand up about cops sprinkling crack on the deceased... Joke but not joke...if you know what I mean.

Now, are they going to examine all the cases this guy worked on/was involved with?

This could get really messy.

Yes, no need to call it a lynching - just a straight up murder is right. I'll await the deets, but everything I see on the video makes me hope the killers never see the light of day. And another question - the bloke videotaping this - why is he video taping a jogger? What would make him think he should videotape this? Does he have an involvement?
The stand your ground laws pushed by the NRA help foster this mindset. I can slap you in the face - and if you come back at me then I can now shoot you. Not good. Never got that about (some) americans.

Apparently he was a neighbour. They were "following" the guy because they said he broken into an empty house. They called the police. One of them did. I don't remember who.

But the guy filming was in the "group" of men in my opinion. Unless I read the articles wrong.

That was my take on it also. It seems like the neighbour was filming the event from a dash cam in his truck as he chased this kid into the grasp of the McMichaels as they lay in waiting a block ahead with their guns locked and loaded. They were all working together...and they were obviously stoked up and felt like what they were doing was patriotic and righteous and a display of their 2A Rights, etc. It’s the same 2A militia culture that has been fueling the anti lockdown protests we’ve been seeing across the US.

These guys were proud of themselves and thought they were filming a great act of patriotism inspired by the words of Donald Trump.

Oh...btw...I was struck (but not surprised) by this quote from the article CanadaMan posted:

Asked about the possibility that the McMichaels could be prosecuted for a hate crime, Reynolds noted that Georgia is one of few states without a hate-crime law. South Carolina, Arkansas and Wyoming also have no such laws, according to a U.S. Justice Department website.
Georgia May be a “Purple” state but rural Georgia is hardcore Trump country.

My impression of this is that the McMichaels and Bryan were all trying to execute some sort of “citizen’s arrest” upon AA for the crime of Jogging While Black. It looks like AA had just kept running after these guys had first tried to stop and arrest him...so they grabbed their guns and jumped into their trucks and started to chase him down.

By this point, AA must have been scared to death and felt he was running for his life but that he was trapped with Bryan chasing him from behind and the McMichaels with their loaded guns ahead.

So AA kept running until he reached the McMichael’s truck and was confronted by Travis pointing a shotgun at him and ordering him to stop. I think the McMichaels had probably believed/hoped that at that point AA would just surrender himself to their arrest after which they would question him and take him to the sheriff’s office.

But that’s not what happened...because AA, who must have been terrified and physically exhausted by running, calculated that he had to make a survival decision of whether to keep running, surrender, or fight for his life. And by AA’s calculus- he was too tired to keep running; he believed that if he surrendered he would certainly be killed; and so he lunged at Travis and tried to grab the gun from him. So...in “self-defence” Travis shot AA under Georgia’s ridiculous Stand Your Ground laws.

So...that is probably what the 1st DA was leaning on in not charging these guys right away...not to mention the fact that Greg McMichael is some sorta retired cop/investigator who knows all the local law enforcement guys who all kinda share his beliefs and think the way he does anyway.

So then if this vid had not somehow gotten leaked to social media this case would have probably been buried and covered up by local LE! This whole incident took place back in Feb...but it looks like the family’s attorney had just publicly released the video recently to pressure state LE to take action by publicly shaming them, and it appears to have worked very effectively (although it is sad that it had to come to this point for this family to be heard).

It is only a matter of time before Donald Trump starts speaking out in support of the McMichaels and Bryan. He is just calculating how best to do it.

He's already denounced it.

Sorry to upset your Derangement Syndrome. You can read for yourself and come out with some negative spin somehow I'm sure.

"I saw the tape and it's very, very disturbing, the tape," the President said, speaking over the phone to the network. "I got to see it, it's very disturbing."

"I will say that looks like a really good young guy," he said of Arbery. "It's a very disturbing situation to me and my heart goes out to the parents and the family and the friends, but yet we have to take it, law enforcement is going to look at it."

Trump said Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp is, "going to be looking at it very strongly and he's going to do what's right, but it's a heartbreaking thing and very rough, rough stuff.

Be patient...LOL...It’s coming. We both know it.

Just watch- over the next week Trump will throw out different quotes, Tweets, etc as trial balloons to see what is festering with his base. This is exactly the kinda story that always gets politicized...and Trump politicizes every situation.

Just because Donald says that today, doesn't mean he'll say the same thing in a week's time. There are "fine people on both sides".

I wonder if McMichael had heard some random gossip that A was the dude - or "may have been" - who stole a firearm from M's truck a while before. M had investigated A for the DA's office a few years before. The M's may have been under the impression that A would accompany them and crack when confronted w his alleged misdeeds. And then it all went very wrong.....

Trump'll flip-flop and try and support both sides at once - just like the CV-19 issue where he supports the armed thugs who invaded the MI state house, but doesn't have the balls to actually come right out and advocate re opening the country because he's still being told most voters are against that.
