Obviously, unto itself, not as big a deal as betting on baseball while being in the game, but it goes his character and his blatant disregard for the integrity of the game. And that concern for integrity is why gambling is a big no-no. I know that lots of players cheat and do other things and are creepy people but they didn't get caught gambling as well.

He could have 10,000 hits and IMO, I hope he never gets in. Paul Giamatti's dad done good.

I have mixed feelings about Pete Rose, The Big Red Machine was my intro to baseball. His obdurate attitude ruined Bart Giamatti's health, condemning him to permanent banishment from the HOF. Had he admitted his guilt and Giamatti had kept his health, maybe - just maybe both he and Joe Jackson would have gotten in. The charges against Shoeless Joe were never proven.

Paul Giamatti nearly became Howard Stern's radio show producer in the early 90's - even though he was just 23 at the time. He chose to become a full time actor instead, they parted amicably...rare for Stern. Several years later Stern chose him to play the crucial role of Programme Director Kenny "Pig Vomit" Rushton in his film Private Parts. The film grossed five times its budget and Paul Giamatti has never been without a project since.

Rose should be in on his accomplishments alone. Lots of other guys have been accused of cheating or did cheat and are in. I agree with shack that the betting on games is a huge issue but I still think he should be in, just put in on his plaque that he bet.

I don’t really care about the corked bat thing. I’m sure he was not the only player guilty of that.

I don’t see it as destroying the integrity of the game. I ascribe to the “If you ain’t cheating’ you ain’t trying” school of thought. Players are always going to try to gain any advantage they can get away with. In fact, if there is a way to cheat that you can reliably get away with and you don’t do it then you are kinda letting down your team and your fans.

I agree, corked bats is no big deal in my opinion.

Accurate as fuck.
Yet some responded.

To me baseball is just the most beautiful game.

One of the things I love about is the abundance of stats which go back decades and decades.

The all time records are fun to behold and compare amongst players.

Therefore that being said I'm totally against cheating. Too me that goes against the integrity of the game.

The Celt is 100% right here Rose only cares about Rose. Always has and always will. He just has always thumbed his nose at rules so this doesn't shock me one bit. And Pete guess what you are never setting foot in the Hall.

...They'll let Pete in any time (once the Covid~19 Pandemic is cleared up), he'll just have to pay for a ticket, same as me and Oracle.

What makes you think that the players 100 years ago were such paragons of integrity? How many of those guys cheated in all kinds of ways and got away with it? I don’t think there is anything new about the idea of cheating in baseball.

You are right there isn't anything new about the idea of cheating in baseball. As a matter of fact of all the major sports it's probably the one where the most cheating has taken place when you think about it.

Doesn't mean I support it though. If I learned the my favourite team or player was cheating to get an unfair advantage I would denounce them for it. I don't subscribe to the well they're just trying theory.

In this case of corked bats. Either make corked bats part of the rules or punish those who use them. Obviously they gave the user an unfair advantage and that tilts the playing field. As a fan I want to everything is being decided according to fair play. That's all I ask for really.

Was it cheating when Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita put giant curves in their hockey sticks? No...Of course not. They were innovators of the game...until the league decided to put a limit on the stick curve...and then that was a rule. Things just evolve.

Was it cheating when they raised the mound to give pitchers an advantage? Not until they changed the rule...and then it was legal.

The pitcher's mound (aka the hill) is the raised dirt area in the center of the infield from which the pitcher pitches. Just behind the center of the mound is the pitcher's rubber, which the pitcher must touch with his pivot foot while preparing for and making the pitch.

The pitcher's rubber is set so that its front edge is exactly 60 feet 6 inches from the rear point of home plate, and is elevated 10 inches above the rest of the playing field. The area of the mound around the pitching rubber is flat. Starting 6 inches in front of the rubber, or 60 feet from home plate, the mound slopes downward at a rate of 1 inch per foot over a span of at least 6 feet.

It is very important that the mound be maintained in good condition. The pitcher depends on having good footing on the mound, and he may be injured he slips during his delivery. This is an especially serious problem when teams are playing in a rain that isn't quite severe enough to require a rain delay.

The height of the mound has not been constant, or even well defined, through baseball history. Before 1893, the pitcher threw from a pitcher's box, which worked better with a level surface rather than a sloped one. In 1893, the pitching distance was changed, and the box was replaced with the pitcher's rubber. Pitchers discovered that they could get more speed on the ball if they were allowed to stride downhill, so their groundskeepers would provide them with a mound. In 1903, the maximum height was set at 15 inches. Those early mounds were not regulated; in Pitching in a Pinch, Christy Mathewson commented that the height of the mound might be changed from day to day to suit the pitching style of the home team's pitcher.

The regular changing of mound height was eventually prohibited. In 1950, teams settled on a height of 15 inches for the mound. Despite this regulation, some teams were accused of using a higher than regulation height mound; Dodger Stadium was particularly notorious for having a high mound. Following the incredibly low scoring in 1968, the rules were changed to reduce the mound to the contemporary 10 inch height. Some accusations of gamesmanship with mounds continue, usually with visiting teams complaining that the mounds in the visitor's bullpen don't match the mound of the field, so that relievers entering the game aren't properly adapted to the game mound.

The only sport where I think cheating is a big deal is in the world of golf. Those guys all play by a code of honour and the Rules of Golf are a sacred thing that they all believe in.

That’s why it shows how much of a douchebag that Donald Trump is for cheating at golf- he plays at a high level where cheating is not tolerated...and he cheats all the time.

Pete Rose was a hard driving, win-at-all-cost type of guy from a blue collar background. He was not particularly likeable and over the years stories came about about domestic abuse, gambling, etc.

But he’s still a baseball icon in the City of Cincinnati and he was still part of an historically great baseball dynasty with the Reds...and he’s the MLB all-time hits leader.

I know he doesn’t pass the “morality” test that MLB has for the Hall of Fame but I disagree with that rule. Pete Rose is a Hall or Fame player...put him in before he passes away. I believe MLB has made it’s point. Perhaps Pete doesn’t deserve it and perhaps it’s not fair to other players but I think bringing Pete back into the MLB fold is the right thing to do and they should just do it.
