Aircraft carrier captain to be removed from duty after pleading for help with coronavirus outbreak: report

BY REBECCA KHEEL

The captain of an aircraft carrier struggling with a coronavirus outbreak will reportedly be relieved from command after a letter he penned pleading for help leaked to the media.

Citing unnamed U.S. officials, Reuters reported Capt. Brett Crozier is expect to be relieved from command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, with one official saying a formal announcement could come as soon as Thursday.

Crozier wrote a letter to Navy leaders that was obtained and published by the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday, showing him warning of dire consequences if most of the sailors on Roosevelt aren’t evacuated.

Officials told Reuters he would be relieved from command because the Navy believes he is one who leaked the letter, not because he wrote it.

If he leaked the letter it is obviously because he felt his concerns were not being taken seriously. Sounds like he did the right thing to protect the sailors on his ship.

If he leaked it, he should face the court martial and be kicked out of the Navy. He is commanding a crew with an average age under 30 years old and in decent physical health. Even if there's an outbreak on board, a common occurrence for the flu like illnesses in the confined spaces of the Navy vessels, the actual threat to the crew is fairly low due to the demographics on board. Most importantly, he is the fucking Captain and suppose to deal with it within the confines of the Navy.

You have never been in the service, eh? The flat feet don't have a clue how the military operates. The captain of a ship may not step outside of the chain of command because his role is apolitical and he has several layers of the flag officers above him whom he answers to.

While I agree with you that chain of command is very important in all branches of the service, I think in this case he was right, I also think he knew what he was doing when he broke protocol. I think he's a hero however the navy can't let this go unpunished

Discipline is the essence of the service. He doesn't have it. What he does have is the command judgement and the ability to treat the outbreak as the regular casualties, stop the operation and park at the closest Navy Yard to deal with the problem through the proper channels while taking care of his sailors.

So then he’ll have to accept whatever punishment the navy decides to mete out. Sometimes there is a cost to doing the right thing. He’s still a hero in my book.

You have never worked for an organization that was incompetent and insensitive to the health and welfare of its employees, eh? Some of us have.

What an idiot. Caring about the welfare of the sailors on his ship is clearly outside of what the Navy expects of him.

When you're in the military you go through channels or you go nowhere. And that is true in America or Canada or any other place with an effective force.

Right, you wouldn't want lives to get in the way of protocol.

Protection of America? you have to get your head examined. The US carriers are used to rain death and destruction on countries all over the globe. The world would be a better place if they all were decommissioned.

If you cannot see now, that the money spent on the war machine would have been better spent on protecting the Americans against the pandemic, you will never grasp it.

By letting foreign nations know of a problem on your ship exposes weakness. Im sure thats something this moron was taught?

What country in their right mind tells the world they have a weak link in the fence??? Now, come.........on!

Would you tell the people in your city your home alarm or home security cameras were not working???? Think about it.

Are you expecting a Pearl Harbour incident? Who do you expect will attack the Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, California?

USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is scheduled to arrive at its new homeport of Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, Calif., on Monday.

The military itself teaches soldiers that you should refuse to follow an order that is illegal or immoral. If a captain orders a private to burn down a village the private is supposed to say No. If the Commander in Chief orders a general to start rounding up Jews and putting them in death camps the general is supposed to say No.

Haha... key word "SUPPOSED TO".

You wanna bet how many soldiers get a bullet in the head for such a pathetic thing like disregard for your commander????

And the military doesnt teach morals. Only how to kill. Morals are left to the people who are to weak to even go into the military and hold protests around the world asking for peace.

I would cringe to see the military you command and train. Bet a life guard and their flotation device could do more damage than any army you direct, Gramps!

(Are we still on for Earl's?) Medium rare for me please!! DONT forget your wallet this time!
