My laptop keeps trying to start but never does actually start. It seems to be recycling the bootstrap thing.

I have windows 10

You may need to re install Windows. Are you seeing any messages or nothing on screen appears. BTW there is a tech forum on the board.

Sounds like boot loops (not fruit loops). It may not be a software problem but a hardware problem. Try taking out the CMOS battery and putting it back in. Or it may the BIOS chip that is corrupt, in that case, the BIOS chip needs to be replaced. Or just get a new laptop.

1 - Make sure you don't have any USB bootable sticks plugged in by accident

2 - Make sure there is no windows media disc in the DVD-Drive if you have one

Here is a web link on getting your computer into safe mode. By getting into safe mode you can confirm it's still worth attempting to repair/correct and has repair options. A common issue is a windows update has applied and is conflicting/damaged a critical boot related drive such as your internal storage (hard drive or SSD):

https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10

In summary from the link above - interrupting the power up cycle - pressing the power button/reset button before it crashes and reboots on it's own - 3 times will initiate the 4th boot up to be a safe mode with repair options. Windows 8 and previous had the F8 or Shift-F8 option for safe mode but that was removed in Windows 10.

Final note - a rebuild of your PC may be your best option now anyways. The above suggestions are to help you come to that conclusion or get the computer working again without too much time/effort hopefully spent.

Good luck!

There is not enough info to make a competent diagnosis. If the computer is 7-8 years old it may be time for a new one or at least a new hard drive. I switched two computers to DDR hard drives at Christmas. Sometimes you can get a very good computer at Shoppers Drug Mart. These are fine for the average person at a very good price. ( better than what you can get at Best Buy )

Depending on a person's needs, amazon still has lots of inventory of decent options especially if you're looking for a desktop only, having a working monitor already.

The posts above yours were general suggestions for Big Rig to attempt based on the limited information shared. Perhaps Big Rig will reply with some more info/updates as we're all sitting around bored anyways. LOL

Cheers

Is it a non ssd drive? This is a bit old school, but at boot up, lightly shake the laptop. Maybe the actuator is stuck and u need to loosen it. I've done this in the past and got the drive to work. If it boots up then down load all your files, replace it with a ssd.

What is a DDR hard drive?
There are different types of DDR RAM and there are SSDs.

Did just that. All the restart options did not work.

Got a computer geek to come over and he took it home.
I will let you know but I suspect corrupted data. I cannot see hardware failure but WTF do I know.

BTW, it is horrible out there driving a truck. Cant find a freaking washroom and you are treated like you got the virus

Cannot meet women on the road now.

I quit. fuck it. Take the Trudeau insurance. I have earned it

Thx for advice

My mistake, I meant SSD hard drive. DDR ram is a a quicker version of the older SD ram

Hard drive is shot. Might as well get another.

Computer Geek guy says avoid Acer and recommends Dell or Asus

He should know as he fixes them

Any opinions? I will likely buy a laptop but I am open to advice

Cheers

Both are good, I like Asus they make quality products and have produced motherboards forever. ... but a HD is not expensive..easy to change and if it had windows 10 on it its not that old....maybe worth it. 50 Bucks for a SSD hardrive an 40-50 bucks to set it up..

CMOS batteries on laptops might not be user replaceable. Laptops today often have components glued or soldered in place.

How old is your laptop?
Thought it was a bad HDD. Same thing happened to me years ago. Bought a HDD, installed it, then installed a Linus OS and laptop was like new again. Laptop, a Dell Core2 duo, which still runs good in spite of being 12 years old. Dumped Windows back in 2007 for Linux which is FREE and just runs leaner and better than any M$ OS.

Asus and Toshiba were the only laptops I would consider years ago. Not sure how they rate now. Would never get Acer.

If you do not need to run windows programs, a chromebook is a very good computing option for surfing the web, email, and consuming video.

Always felt chromebook was too limited.

You may be better off getting a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB which has basically the same specs and runs only $100. Plug it into your large screen 4K HDTV turning it into a second monitor, get a wireless keyboard and mouse and you got a huge monitor doing whatever any laptop will do. Or you can plug it into any PC monitor you have, using it as a desktop PC.

Anyone know someone who can repair a laptop for a reasonable price during the pandemic? PM me. My laptop probably has a virus problem.

Lugging all this stuff around with you and finding a monitor to plugin is very inconvenient even if you're a tech head.
