Depending on a person's needs, amazon still has lots of inventory of decent options especially if you're looking for a desktop only, having a working monitor already. There is not enough info to make a competent diagnosis. If the computer is 7-8 years old it may be time for a new one or at least a new hard drive. I switched two computers to DDR hard drives at Christmas. Sometimes you can get a very good computer at Shoppers Drug Mart. These are fine for the average person at a very good price. ( better than what you can get at Best Buy )

Did just that. All the restart options did not work.
Is it a non ssd drive? This is a bit old school, but at boot up, lightly shake the laptop. Maybe the actuator is stuck and u need to loosen it. I've done this in the past and got the drive to work. If it boots up then down load all your files, replace it with a ssd.
My mistake, I meant SSD hard drive. DDR ram is a a quicker version of the older SD ramWhat is a DDR hard drive?
There are different types of DDR RAM and there are SSDs.
Both are good, I like Asus they make quality products and have produced motherboards forever. ... but a HD is not expensive..easy to change and if it had windows 10 on it its not that old....maybe worth it. 50 Bucks for a SSD hardrive an 40-50 bucks to set it up..Hard drive is shot. Might as well get another.
Computer Geek guy says aboid Acer and recommends Dell or Asus
He should know as he fixes them
Any opinions? I will likely buy a laptop but I am open to advice
Cheers
CMOS batteries on laptops might not be user replaceable. Laptops today often have components glued or soldered in place.Sounds like boot loops (not fruit loops). It may not be a software problem but a hardware problem. Try taking out the CMOS battery and putting it back in. Or it may the BIOS chip that is corrupt, in that case, the BIOS chip needs to be replaced. Or just get a new laptop.
How old is your laptop?Hard drive is shot. Might as well get another.

Lugging all this stuff around with you and finding a monitor to plugin is very inconvenient even if you're a tech head.Always felt chromebook was too limited.
You may be better off getting a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB which has basically the same specs and runs only $100. Plug it into your large screen 4K HDTV turning it into a second monitor, get a wireless keyboard and mouse and you got a huge monitor doing whatever any laptop will do. Or you can plug it into any PC monitor you have, using it as a desktop PC.
