Saskatchewan minister tweets people should 'pray and repent' to rid COVID-19, then deletes it

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: MAR 28, 2020

REGINA — A Saskatchewan cabinet minister who tweeted an Old Testament passage where God tells people to pray and repent to cure an epidemic says he deleted it out of concern it may have sent the wrong message.

As the province responds to the COVID-19 outbreak, Minister of Highways Greg Ottenbreit tweeted a photo early Saturday where a section of scripture is highlighted and circled with the text “Pay Attention Children.”

In that particular passage God says when he sends an epidemic onto his people, if they “pray to me and repent and turn away from the evil they have been doing” they will be forgiven and their lands will be restored.

Ottenbreit says in the tweet “I guess it worked a few thousand years ago …couldn’t hurt.”

In a statement, the Yorkton-area MLA says his Christian faith is important to him and he intended to encourage those inclined to pray to do so.

He says he realized the picture framed it harshly and felt it could be interpreted to mean that’s all one should do, which is why he deleted it.

As of Saturday, Saskatchewan has reported 134 cases of COVID-19.

“I believe faith and prayer to be important, however, everyone needs to follow the direction being provided by governments and health officials regarding safe protocols, self-isolation and social distancing in order to reduce the risk to themselves and others,” Ottenbreit said in the statement.

Last year Ottenbreit, who opposes abortion, drew criticism in his previous portfolio as Minister of Rural and Remote Health when he told a convention of others opposed to abortion in his home constituency that he would “continue the fight.”

There's no harm in praying. There are a few times in history when prayer was credited with ending a plague.

If you look up these historical events, you may be able to figure out the answer to that question. You shouldn't object to prayer if you don't even have a vaccine.

Whatever Gods South Korea, Japan, HK, and Taiwan worship we should pray to those Gods, whatever God Italy worships we should not pray to that God.

Here is probably the most famous example of a plague stopped by prayer.

In 1624, a plague beset Palermo. During this hardship Saint Rosalia appeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter, to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found. She ordered him to bring her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city.[3]

The hunter climbed the mountain and found her bones in the cave as described. He did what she had asked in the apparition. After her remains were carried around the city three times, the plague ceased. After this Saint Rosalia was venerated as the patron saint of Palermo, and a sanctuary was built in the cave where her remains were discovered.[4]

The Pope addressed the world in what was a very inclusive prayer. He requested that we all unite in Love in this very Challenging times. Not HATRED for various religions or races as seen in some of the posts in this Board, otherwise that makes us hypocrites in this respect. However we should all follow the basic guidelines to keep ourselves safe. That will help us, and all that are working so hard to try and end this Pandemic.
Just plain Common Sense!!

Hello. You know, I think we should pray not just to rid COVID-19. We should pray when we sincerely want do it. I believe that prayers can be heard by God only if they come from our heart. Yes, we survive not the best time now. Once I found interesting web page prayrs.org which helps you deliver your prayer to the church all over the world. It is quite hard to travel now and I decided to send my prayer to the Church of the Holy sepulchre. For me this is the most saint place in the world. I was there several time. So, it’s decision of everyone where and when to pray.

With a 6-3 Catholic majority on SCOTUS, will they put what the Pope says above the US Constitution? None of the lawsuits against perv priests are likely to stick...
