That's how it's always been.
When Quebec separatists were running roughshod they were told bluntly by American Senators that their language laws would have to be repealed if they wanted to do business.

Nothing for anyone to be proud or haughty about. We all need the Federal Government more than ever now... Those Liberals like us to suckle at their teats. They just tried to pass a law where they get to do our thinking as well.
Western separatists are quiet because, like many abused spouses, they are depressed by the terrible economic reality of leaving their abuser. That kind of hopelessness often leads to quiet, withdrawn behaviour.
Does that make you happy?
You forget that Canada needed Alberta to pays its bills for many years when oil prices were and we will need again when is all over.
Alberta needs The Federal Government more than ever. Yes, these separatists now know that at times like this they will only benefit if they are a part of Canada. After all Alberta has not really invested in the future. All that occurred is that they gave away generous tax deductions to the elitists. Most other oil rich regions spent more in investment in infrastructure, as well as oil refineries etc. Not long to go before oil is a well forgotten commodity. Maybe not this decade, but Canada is going to be less and less revenue dependent on oil!!
The fact they woke up from their delusions makes me happy. They needed a reality check it is too bad it was as a result of this.
Like Quebec, and like in times past, every province runs to latch onto the federal teat when times get tough. And $50/B oil shows that the woes of Alberta was always due to the low cost of crude first and foremost, and unfortunately, they can't blame Ottawa for that so they have to think of some other excuse why they're screwed.

Saudi Arabia just flooded the market to try to kill US fracking once and for all.
So now Trump is filling up the US strategic tanks to stall and just killed environmental standards for cars in order to get them to burn more oil.
Alberta is just collateral damage from the Saudi/Russia oil battles going on with the states now.
Most abused spouses ultimately overcome their fear of the economic stress of leaving, because not many people can cope with perpetual abuse.
