A UK doctor is warning those stockpiling gloves amid the coronavirus outbreak that wearing them can increase the risk of catching the deadly bug, according to report.

Dr. Simran Deo said that gloves can collect germs on the surface from infected people who cough or sneeze on them, the Mirror reported.

“While gloves can protect your hands from coming into contact with these droplets, they will still remain on the surface of the gloves and may even last there for longer if they are not washed frequently, leading to an increased risk of catching the virus by touching your face or food with your gloves, as well as the risk of passing it on to others,” Deo told the outlet.

She said that regularly washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer is a better defense against the virus.

“Gloves should not be treated as an alternative to good hygiene: The primary advice is to make sure you wash your hands with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand rub for 20 to 30 seconds, especially when you’ve been on public transport, such as the train or bus,” Deo told the outlet.

Health officials around the world are seeking to advise people of best practices as the virus spreads to more than 115,000 people.

You see it at the grocery stores with the check out clerks wearing gloves and always touching their faces, it's pointless.

Maybe wash the gloves with soap and water before taking them off?

I heard that some stores are no longer accepting bills and coins.

You need to wear both gloves, facemask and glasses at the same time. Reason wearing all at same time have an inhibit responses when both facemask, gloves, and glasses help you from touching your face and eyes.

Touching our face is usually something we do inadvertently. We don't even think of it. I think that having gloves on is a visual and tactile reminder not to do that.

Having said that, I agree that gloves are not a cure all in terms of prevention unless the wearer changes the gloves for every single personal interaction. I've seen a waitress clearing a couple of tables, taking back the dirty dishes and then coming back with plates of food to other tables with the same gloves. They probably wear them for hours at a time. She may have been safer but it does nothing for the patrons.

At a bank, I was reluctant to use an ATM because of so many people touching the keys, so I went in line. The teller is wearing gloves and touching customer cards and the counter where the customer has also touched etc. The kicker was when a customer had to sign and there was only 1 pen and every customer was using it. At thay point, I figure touching an ATM key with the tip of my finger was coming in contact with less surface are than grabbing a pen and holding it against the pads of my fingers. I went back and used the ATM and pulled down my sleeve to cover my finger before tapping the keys.

Put it this way, it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to be properly protected/sterile if we are out. Look at the protocol for surgery in an operating room needed to achieve sterility. We can't feel that we're safe when out, regardless of our precautions.

I am not nor have I ever been a germaphobe, but protecting yourself doesn't need to cause paranoia. Yes, there is no foolproof way to live a relatively normal life and be 100% protected. Since COVID I keep Lysol disinfecting wipes in the car, at work and in the house. Fortunately I always kept a good stock of these wipes the last several years and didn't have to find any recently. I have given some away to family/ friends since there is a shortage.

When I pump gas, use ATM, go in store etc I grab a Lysol wipe. Simply wrap it around your finger before pushing any keys on an ATM or debit such as gas pump or in a store. At gas pump after debit part done, wrap it around the pump handle while pumping. Going in grocery store you can clean the cart handle before using and use it to pick up items. You not only protect yourself you potentially help others. I use gloves in conjunction with wipes to prevent forgetfulness and when removing gloves I turn them inside out so in disposing I am not touching the outside. The gloves I use are almost impossible to remove so turning inside out is easiest way to get them off and common sense tells me that I do not touch any part that may have infection. I never took a course to learn how to do this, it is part convenience and part necessity.

A lot of this is common sense and as many have said, washing hands more often and other similar measures is good sense even when there is no pandemic. It would prevent a lot of issues and hopefully people will keep doing these things. Yes, we all will get more lax in time but keeping cleanliness in mind makes it easier to protect yourself at times like this.

Hmm..... too bad a Lysol mask would be so unpleasant to wear. I'm surprised some folks aren't finding a way to do something to that effect. I couldn't do it but some people will do anything .......

Here
I find that if I have gloves on I tend not to touch my face as much. Its kind of a reminder. I also go threw about 10 pares a day for my job and in between changes I wash my hands.

I guess you still have to use common sense even when you’re wearing gloves.

I carry a bottle of beer in case water and soap aren't readily available.

Portugal: Beer used as disinfectant

"LISBON, Portugal — Beer is being used as a disinfectant in Portugal to help fight COVID-19.

Portuguese distillery Levira and beer producer Super Bock Group say they are diverting some 56,000 litres of alcohol from beer production and using it instead to make disinfectant gel to help fight the spread of the new coronavirus.

Portugal has recorded just over 1,000 cases and six deaths.

The distillery said Friday it is aware of a shortage of the gel. It plans to switch more production to disinfectant.

The gel is to be given to three public health service hospitals in the region of Porto, the country’s second-largest city."

I have boxes of 200 latex gloves and sanitizer at home and in the cars, and wear/use them whenever I'm outside a clean zone like my house, my garage, the interior of the cars. I'm not going out much but did go to the grocery, the bank, the pharmacy, and to a car parts place in the last 7 days. In each case, I wore a fresh pair of gloves outside, and carefully peeled them off and trashed them outside before going into a clean zone area i.e. wore gloves into the grocery, but took them off before getting into the truck, then put on a fresh pair to unload the groceries, wipe down the cargo area of my vehicle and disinfect packaging before putting away in the fridges/freezer in my garage. Then I disposed of those gloves too before entering the house.

While wearing gloves, I also typically wear sunglasses/regular magnifiers, and have not felt it difficult to avoid touching my face, particularly since the gloves are black and as such are pretty noticeable. Not approaching anyone within a two meter range and am hyper on the lookout for anyone coughing/sneezing/sniffling/wheezing in my general vicinity and am sure to avoid contact.

I have become an one handed man- dirty hand(right), clean hand(left). Left hand is for opening door to my vehicle, right hand is for opening all other doors. I wash both constantly, use sanitizer in my vehicle before touching anything and am scrupulously tracking what I touch and where i go- my credit and debit cards are in my left pocket, cash is out, for now. In the end, it's the little things that make the difference. I dont bother bother with gloves, but I do wear a proper N95 mask and wraparound sunglasses.

I just watch news footage of what the doctors and nurses are wearing and try to use what they use to the best of my ability. I obviously wouldn't wear a hazmat suit or anything but I find in my case anyway the gloves are a reminder to not touch my face. If a have an itch on my face and see the blue glove on my hand as it rises up makes me stop. For me it's more of a reminder than anything.
