In 1910, many people feared that all life would be extinguished when the Earth passed through the tail of Halley’s Comet. In 1881 it had been discovered that comet’s tails contained a lethal gas related to cyanide, called cyanogen. In 1910, as the comet passed between the sun and the Earth, people feared the planet would be sprayed with the poisonous gas from the sun’s blast. In reality, the gas was 23 million kilometres away, and the concentration of gases in the tail was minute.
The Rover company ( later to be named Land Rover ) started to produce all terrain vehicles in 1947. They enjoyed great success. In 1950 the Korean war started, at first the South Korean army relied on the US to supply them with Willeys Jeeps, but soon had to put out a tender for their own vehicles. Toyota supplied the South Koreans with early versions of the Land Cruisers in 1953, by 1955 Toyota had a civilian version available. The early Land Cruisers were mostly sent to developing nations in Africa,South America and Asia. These vehicles were a huge success for Toyota. Once the Land Cruiser hit the market Rover lost 98% of sales in three years and was left with only one customer. After the late 50s, only the British military bought the Rover vehicles. Toyota was able to sell a vehicle that was equally as capable as the Rover at about a third of the price.
