Israeli researchers claim they have developed a vaccine against the coronavirus for poultry and are only three months away from testing a vaccine on humans.

The research team from the Galilee Research Institute, (Migal) which specializes in the fields of biotechnology, environmental and agricultural science, have been developing the vaccine for the past four years and claim it could be modified for use in humans within three months because of a similar DNA structure in the virus that had spread from China.

"There is a high urgency around the world to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus in humans, so we are working to expedite the development process and achieve an effective vaccine for the COVID-19 virus over the next 8-10 weeks and move to safety trials [in humans] within 90 days," said Migal CEO David Zigdon in a press conference.
"The vaccine developed by us for poultry is administered orally and the human vaccine offered by us is also expected to be administered orally."
Zigdon noted that due to the urgent global need for the vaccine, Migal is working around the clock with potential partners to help accelerate the research process in humans needed to complete the final product development and regulatory process.
Migal founder, Prof. Dan Levanon, said that the duration of the vaccine's development process is contingent upon health officials' regulations.
"Under these conditions, where the disease causes enormous damages as it worsens, I believe the regulations will be eased," said Levanon. "Had [the vaccine] had to be subjected to the usual regulations, it would have taken several years. Of course, without risking human life."
Minister of Science and Technology Ofir Akunis welcomed the researchers' breakthrough.
"I hope and believe there will be further progress soon," said Akunis.

Lets hope its true, though it seems awfully unlikely unless they skip a bunch of steps.

Developing a vaccine is not so difficult, usually it is a half dead version of the virus itself. Introducing the half dead virus into the immune system can stimulate the production of antibodies. Test and trials have to be done to be sure it is safe, and make sure the vaccine have no side effects.

I think it actually says that testing may start in 3 months, not distribution. It still seems like the earliest timeline for anything being worked on.

I believe the term is "attenuated". The virus is weakened such that there is not enough to make you sick but there is enough for the body to detect a pathogen and subsequently produce antibodies.

Last nights news said we are about 10 months away ourselves.
Considering that this is a situation where both lives are being lost and the world economy is tanking on a daily basis, 6 or 7 months is a huge length of time. Look how much potential damage could be avoided in that time.

It does not make sense why anyone would want to downplay the earliest possible development of a solution.

Several labs are weeks away from having developed a vaccine. It is the clinical trials that take a long time.

You don't even become immune if infected and survive , a Chinese woman was re-infected.

Exactly.

The sooner the vaccine is developed, the sooner more lives will be saved and the economy returning to status quo.

I heard in the US they feel they are getting pretty close as well. The sooner the better, would be great to nail this sucker before it nails us.

IMO our real line of defence in the near term will be old style public health measure like quarantine, social distancing, contact tracing, bans on large events and broad population testing. Not perfect by a long shot and disruptive but such measures save lives. I think we will also see the emergence of some repurposed therapeutics like HIV medication, chloroquine (the Chinese use this) and other anti virals. There are therapeutic tests going on in China with WHO involvement that should show results in March. If some are shown to be effective the challenge will be to scale up supply.

Isn't it interesting that it's scientists in Israel that are close to developing this vaccine and not any other country in the region.
Franky will boycott it.

BTW, several other countries have people on it including China. Just a matter of who will get a working one first.
