With the next World Cup of Hockey highly likely in 2021, and the next Winter Olympics in 2022, I'm beginning to wonder if there might be some surprising choices for Team Canada? I'm going to assume that regardless of tournament, NHL players will hopefully be allowed to participate. That said, how many from past teams could actually be there again? Who might be some new faces on this team? With the state of Canadians in pro hockey right now, would they as a team actually be good enough to win?

Here's a draft team for consideration. Feel free to add, delete, substitute at will....

Centres: Connor McDavid, Nathan McKinnon, Sidney Crosby, Patrice Bergeron

Left Wings: Brad Marchand, Jon Huberdeau, Kyle Connor, Taylor Hall

Right Wings: Steve Stamkos, Travis Konecny, Mark Stone, Blake Wheeler

Spare Forwards: ( John Tavares, Tyler Seguin, Mark Scheifele )

Left Defense: Mark Giordano, Morgan Reilly, Shea Theodore

Right Defense: Drew Doughty, Brent Burns, Alex Pietrangelo,

Spare Defense: ( Kris Letang, Shea Weber )

Goalies: Carey Price, Marc-Andre Fleury

Spare Goalie: ( Brayden Holtby )

Looking at this roster, really wondering if Canada's days of international dominance are now behind them?

The last time they loaded up on centres IIRC. It was not a traditional roster with a balance of positions.

So you're trading experience with energy and raw skills? That's one way to go. How do you see other countries setting up? Will they go with experience or youth, or maybe a balanced mix?

Not all the experience is gone, there's still plenty of it there but introducing some new blood would be good for Canada's future.

You should do a little more research. Conner and Wheeler are Americans

Connor Kyle~Michigan
Blake Wheeler~Minnesota

And, M.A. Fleury? Eek, I hope not.
Surely there are 3 better Canadian goaltenders around.

Ok. Name the ones you'd recommend. That's the purpose of this thread after all...

Carey Price, Jordan Binnington, Braden Holtby, in no particular order.

Fair enough. I had two of the same. I went with Fleury over Binnington based on his experience and current level of play this season...that could change however.

MacKenzie Blackwood (23) could be considered as well.
Braden Holtby is 30.

As much as Carey Price has had a stellar career, players do tend to decline, and often dramatically/quickly.
By 2022, M.A.F. will be 37, CP31 will be 34, cliffs may appear suddenly.

Is there actually an international best on best scheduled? And the last I heard, the NHL feels their participation in '22 is doubtful.

Good picks. I would like to see Carter Hart in there.

I think they leaning towards the world cup as the next best on best.
When would that be? Fall of '21? Is a year and a half enough time to put this kind of thing together?

If not by then, any rosters would probably be very different than any rosters being discussed in present terms, because then we are looking at 2 years at best. And we know how much the landscape can change in that time frame.

Between Bettman, NHLPA, IOC, and IIHF, maybe never.
