Can anyone suggest a worse defeat than 22 Feb. 2020? That was beyond embarrassing! Shameful? If I was a Leaf I could not have faced the media.

The most embarrassing part is they'll just welcome him back to practice with open arms and not fire him.
No pride.

Pat Quin did knock out Bobby Orr and there was a bench clearing brawl though.

No concussion protocol in those days and Orr did play in the next game. You would never see that today, thank God.

March 19, 1981. Buffalo 14 Toronto 4. I remember listening to the game on the radio thinking the Sabres would never stop scoring. The game was in Buffalo and the sound of the horn and crowd after each goal was so annoying .

Blowing the 4-1 lead to Boston in game 7, still is the worst loss to me. It still stings so bad, that the NHL named it the game of the decade.

That was one of my earlier exposures to hockey, not long after my parents decided to stay in Toronto.

Bobby Orr was protected, his linemate was someone no one wanted to fight: Don Awrey. The Leafs had a psychopath named Forbes Kennedy who tried to take on the entire Bruins team, Awrey decided to stop the nonsense and bloodied him. While they were entangled Kennedy head butted Awrey then punched the linesman. Correct me if I'm wrong but Kennedy was suspended for life.

As for tml most embarrassing loss it was a game not long after that set the Leafs on their destiny of futility. They were played the newly relocated Calgary Flames and lost 7 -1. I'll never forget the headline on the Toronto Sun the next day: LEAFS CRUSHED .

Ooops my memory isn't that great, now I'm not quite sure if Awrey and Kennedy fought. It was quite a freakshow.

I remember the Forbes Kennedy game. The Leafs had just scraped into the playoffs and were matched against the Bruins super team and the playoff series was a humiliating mismatch. IIRC, Kennedy went berserk in Game 4 which was as brutally lopsided as the other 3. The Leafs simply brawled and tried to physically hurt the far superior Bruins to get "revenge" - the Old School Code.

After this debacle, the Leafs simply didn't make the playoffs for another few years while Ballard and his stooge, King Clancy swaggered around, making asses of themselves and humiliating the entire city. Most of the decent players simply got traded away because they wanted to play with a decent franchise with some self respect.

Yes, I agree w another comment that "Saved by the Zamboni Driver" sounds like a great name for a band.

I remember watching that game.
What stuck in my memory was the fans reaching over the glass taking swings at Kennedy.
That round was a sweep for Boston, every game totally one sided.
I was a kid and stayed up late every game, there was so much fighting.

Back then it was 2 games back to back, a day off, and two games back to back, then every other day if it extended.

They did some kind of analysis on that game, and the chances of that happening were about as likely as getting hit by lighting with the winning lottery ticket in your pocket. I shit you not. They took into consideration, things like from that point of the game, the average time a team has the buck, the amount of scoring chances they get vs save percentage, etc...

I keep wishing that Stompin' Tom Connors was still around.

"The Zamboni Driver Goalie" would have been an instant classic up there with "Bud the Spud", "The Hockey Song" and "My Hockey Mom"!

But you factor in Marchand and Bergeron on a mission, it really wasn't that unlikely after all. Hate them all you like, one of the best, most committed and most intense lines ever to play the game. (And even better now with DP alongside them). Class and quality shows in the crunch.

I remember the Bruins totally dominated play for the last 10 minutes and the Leafs looked like they got run over by a tank. It wasn't luck; it was just a better team doing what it needed to do. The Leafs looked like a helpless rat being dismembered and torn apart methodically and relentlessly by a big, nasty tomcat!
