I think it means that the woman is just stating that the relationship is not going any further than "friendship ". Friendship is ambiguous and doesn't have to include sex as their are sexual friends, monetary friends, ride sharing friends and chat friends to name a few. Friendships can be mutually exclusive or intertwined.
First thing, never EVER argue in the slightest at that point. Because it is actually pleading, that's what it is. Very weak. It must not ever be about convincing someone, that doesn't work with a woman. It's like talking to the police if you are seriously suspected of something, or going to be charged - no, shut up!
