Benjamin Netanyahu unveils plans for 5,000 new homes in East Jerusalem

Palestinian spokesperson calls plan 'illegal' as Netanyahu campaigns ahead of next month's election

The Associated Press·Posted: Feb 20, 2020 11:16 AM ET |

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Thursday he was pushing ahead with the construction of 5,000 new Jewish homes in key areas of East Jerusalem, where critics say additional building could cut Palestinian residents off from the rest of the West Bank.

On a visit to the Har Homa neighbourhood, Netanyahu pledged to build the homes there and in the Givat Hamatos neighbourhood. Both lie on some of the last spaces of land linking the Palestinian areas of the West Bank to their hoped-for capital in East Jerusalem.

Netanyahu pledged to turn Har Homa into a "mid-sized city," expanding a presence that many believe has already dealt a devastating blow to the Palestinian dream of independence.

Building in the areas has previously sparked international outcry, which has at times reined in Netanyahu's settlement building sprees. But emboldened by U.S. President Donald Trump's support and his favourable Mideast plan, Netanyahu appears to be charging ahead with construction there.

"We are connecting Jerusalem. We are connecting all parts of the united Jerusalem, the rebuilt Jerusalem," he said. "We did it in the face of fierce international opposition. We surmounted all the obstacles and we have done it."

Netanyahu said he was pushing forward with 5,200 homes for Jews in the area, in addition to 1,000 new homes for Palestinians who live in Jerusalem's nearby Beit Safafa neighbourhood.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, along with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip — land Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war — for their future state. They have long opposed construction in this part of East Jerusalem, claiming it would isolate Jerusalem from the West Bank.

Netanyahu is also aiming for re-election on March 2 in the country's third vote in less than a year, though a looming corruption trial due to start two weeks later clouds his future. During the campaign he has repeatedly pandered to his nationalist base of voters whom he hopes will turn out en masse to deliver him victory over his centrist rivals in the Blue and White party.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, denounced the move as another of Netanyahu's "attempts to destroy the two-state solution and any possibility of peace."

"This is a grave violation of the international law which says that settlements in all the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, is illegal," he added.

The Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now said expanding in both of the controversial neighbourhoods amounted to "state suicide."

"Both sever parts of East Jerusalem and the connection to Bethlehem, preventing a viable two-state solution," it said in a statement.

Trade dispute settled for now

Israel has annexed East Jerusalem in a move not recognized by most of the international community, and it considers the entire city as its eternal, undivided capital. Upending decades of U.S. foreign policy, the Trump administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2017, moving its embassy there the following year.

Under Trump's Mideast vision, Israel would retain full control of the city and its venerated holy sites. The Palestinians would get a capital in the city's outskirts, which is now made up of poor, crowded neighbourhoods located behind a hulking concrete separation barrier.

The Palestinians have rejected the plan outright.

Even with tensions high after the unveiling of Trump's plan, Israel and the Palestinians managed to resolve one of their nagging disputes Thursday by reaching an agreement to end an escalating trade crisis.

Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel would begin allowing Palestinian agricultural exports after the Palestinians resumed accepting Israeli beef.

The Palestinian agriculture ministry said Israel had allowed the Palestinians to import beef directly from abroad without acknowledging whether the Palestinians had agreed to accept Israeli beef as well.

The trade crisis erupted in September, when the Palestinians decided to stop importing beef from Israel. The Palestinian Authority claimed most of the 120,000 head of cattle they imported monthly from Israel was itself imported and they therefore preferred to import directly from abroad. The move appeared aimed at reducing the Palestinians' economic dependence on Israel.

Shortly after the September announcement, Israeli cattle ranchers saw a drop in their market and pressured Israeli authorities to take action. Bennett retaliated with a ban on Palestinian beef and other products, triggering the Palestinians to expand their boycott, and stop importing Israeli vegetables, fruits, beverages and mineral water.

The Palestinians said their actions were aimed at pressuring Israel into revoking its ban, while Israel said normal trade would be restored the moment the Palestinians reversed the cattle ban that sparked the crisis.

On someone else's land?
Even when its a war crime?
And only for one race?
You just proved your own bullshitting.

You always claim that there are no "races". That is why discrimination against Jews is not racist.

BTW, I was simply talking about basic economic principles of supply and demand. I wasn't politicizing it.

I've been consistent, there are no biological races but there are cultural divisions we label as race. Those can be hair colour, skin colour, religion, language or cultural, but that is how we use the term race.
So while both Palestinians and Jews are 'semites' and considered very similar in that imaginary 'biological' consideration of race, their different religion and language allow both to consider each other different cultural 'races'.

If you're talking supply and demand, then just make a basic statement or two to clear it up.
Do you think the settlements are illegal or not?
Do you support the two state solution, a one state apartheid solution or a one state solution based on equal rights?

And how do settlements fit into that solution?

I am clear. Building more houses increases supply and lessens pressure on demand. I am not sure why you cannot accept this universal truth and are trying to pin me into some debate that has nothing to do with economics.

So why did you use the term about helping only "one race" instead of saying one culture? Wouldn't that have been more precise? Say what you mean and mean what you say, especially online where you have an opportunity to edit your statements unlike in a live face to face discussion. As such I will take your statement at face value and that you consider Jews to be a separate race. Just as basketcase keeps saying about you.

Your poor choice of words, which you are now trying to talk your way out of, truly displays what you really think.

My poor choice of words?
You're saying that adding more settlements on someone else's stolen land in a process that has killed the two state solution would be good because it would lessen 'supply and demand' for Israeli Jewish housing.
Your choice of words suggest that you think 'supply and demand' Trump's Palestinian rights to their own land and the possibility of a peaceful two state solution.

That poor choice of words implies that you also support the continuing creation of apartheid Israel, based on race.
In this context the use of the word 'race' is the correct choice, since it covers cultural, language and religious differences.

I know, you are not a stupid guy, but sometimes your responses are ridiculously stupid because you never want to admit that you are wrong or misspoke.

You know I meant that the poor choice of words referred to
And only for one race?
after you have repeatedly claimed that the issues that you and the Arabs have against Israel is not racially biased.

I clearly caught you on it. You then tried to backpedal (quite lamely, at that) and when that didn't work you are trying to change the discussion. I will not debate when you are being intellectually dishonest on a topic.

I will pick up the discussion if and when you admit that using the word race was a poor choice of words. Actually, I think it was the right choice according to your philosophy of mid-East issues. It was a poor choice because it contradicts your bogus position that those philosophies are not racist.

Admit that you should have used a word other than race and we can talk more. I'm not holding my breath because I know that you will want to get in the last word like you always do (it is amazing that when I open the politics forum how many times you are the last poster on so many topics) and you will spout more racist rhetoric.

My issues with Israel are based on their racist policies, as I continue to point out there are groups here like ijvcanada and over there, like B'teselem, that make it clear these are racist political policies put in place by a government. Clearly not all Jews support the policies of Israel.

So criticizing Israeli government policy to steal Palestinian land and create settlements designed for one 'race' is an accurate description of what is going on. The settlements are build for Israeli Jews, not for the Palestinians living in what should be Palestine. They are racist.

Using the word 'race' in this context is correct, its you that keeps trying to step back your initial claim that you think racist settlements are good because they create 'affordable' housing for Israeli Jews on stolen Palestinian land that should be part of a Palestinian state.

Describing Israeli policy as racist is clearly correct.
Apartheid is racist.
Bantustans are racist.
Taking Palestinian land illegally and giving it to Israeli Jews as 'affordable' housing is both racist and a war crime.

Quite clearly the 'racist policy' you object to is Israel existing. Everything else you post is just a smokescreen. That is the only explanation why you claim to support equal rights while also saying Jews have no right to be in the West Bank and have even suggested being there makes them legitimate targets for terrorism. You also prove your ridiculous hypocrisy every time tou complain about 'racist' Israel while making excuses for outright racism from Hamas and the PA.

Actually, no. You said the new housing would help "only one race". Should I copy your post again? I don't mind. Based on that quote you consider the Jews and the Arabs separate races. It can be interpreted in no other way. You were very clear on that.

For a person who says they are only here to talk about the basic economic principles you can’t seem to stay on topic.

You seem to easily triggered by Frank’s principled focus on universal human rights and the religious sectarianism inherent in building “Jewish housing”, building illegally on occupied territory, and the creation of Bantustan’s.

He was able to focus on that. As a Zionist, you can’t. Zionism is a supremacist ideology for Jews. Any interpretation that interferes with that you block out. We see this in the story and your support for it in action here.

Frank is free from the ideological shackles that force you see everything through this Zionist lens. Hence the dumbing down effects of Zionism.

And BTW, your insistence that you are only talking about “basic economic principles of supply and demand” in reference to this story is about as tasteless and disingenuous as someone stating that they are only talking about “basic economic principles of share price increase “ when referencing demonstrated historical uses of Zyklon-B during WW2 in relation to the product line and market value of the chemical manufacturer Detia-Degesch.

Straw man, basketcase, straw man.
I back peace and think the most likely way forward is the one state solution with equal rights as opposed to the one state apartheid solution you appear to be backing.
The two state solution would have been good decades ago, but with all those settlements creating 'affordable' 'facts on the ground', the two state solution has been killed.

Bring in the ICC and let everyone have basic human rights and the vote.
That is what think is racist policy, equal treatment before the law and equal rights.

Yes, and that is correct.
Are you going to say that Israel is building settlements in the Palestinian occupied territories where both 'races' of Palestinians and Israeli Jews are allowed to live equally?
'Race' is the correct term here since the cultural differences include religion, language and culture between two biologically identical groups.

Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews. You love pretending this is about race and ignoring that 20% of Israel are the same ethnicity as West Bank Palestinians.
