Several times I have made a U-turn on a green left arrow and the car behind me has honked. Has this happened to anybody else? Why do people do this,? This is when there are no signs prohibiting U-turns

People tend to be unclear on when a U-turn is allowed at an intersection. We don't make it any clearer by sometimes posting "No U-turn" signs, sometimes posting "U-turn allowed" signs, and most often posting neither. If a U-turn is allowed at any intersection without a "No U-turn" sign, why do they sometimes post "U-turn allowed" signs? It confuses people who don't know it's otherwise legal. Also, when someone makes a U-turn, it's unexpected, so it jolts the driver behind. And for some reason, people are super quick to honk if they see something they don't like, rather than assess the situation first.

Yeah, because that's what we need on our roads: more angry drivers.

I once did a uturn to catch up with a cop to ask him where the nearest Tim's was located (figured he would know for sure.) He gave me directions but also cautioned me about doing the uey. Didn't bother getting into a discussion with him about how it was perfectly legal.

I rarely do U turns. You need to keep an eye on the opposite side traffic and the one turning right from your left. I would rather make the left get into a plaza and come out at the opposite direction. But then again tardiness isn't one of my concern so I don't have to rush.

You are correct and if someone is behind you when you make a U-turn you are doing it unsafely.
U turns at Intersections should be avoided.
If you check your drivers handbook, the safest way to make a U-turn is to signal for a right turn and check your mirrors and over your shoulder before moving to the right side of the road and pull off the road or to the shoulder. Once there, you should stop if no one is immediately behind you and signal for a left turn. If traffic is clear in both directions, you should move forward and turn sharply and quickly, continually checking for traffic while you turn.

Any failure to obey these laws or to be aware of other motorists on the road could not only lead to a potential fine from police, but could also lead to a collision involving serious injuries.

I stand on the horn when some idiot pulls U turn from the left turning lane in front of me. High on the list of discourteous behaviour.

It fucks everything up for everyone. Make the turn as normal and turn by going around the block, or into the parking lot or whatever.

U turns are permitted in Ontario unless prohibiting one. Similarly a cyclist is permitted to pass another cyclist and cut off a truck. The cyclist would be right but would be dead. So go ahead Darwin is waiting for you.

I avoid doing u-turns in intersections for the most part, but it hardly "fucks everything up for everyone" unless you're doing it wrong.

There are two scenarios where it might fuck things up that aren't the fault of the U-turner. One: there's a guy trying to turn right into the lane you're pulling a U-turn into. Unless they have an advance right (which likely means U-turns are prohibited at that intersection), they are actually obligated to give way to you, but no one is watching for a u-turn, so it can get hairy. Even though the obligation is on them, I'd suggest not ever trusting that if you're pulling a U-turn in an intersection. Two: the guys behind you are playing follow-the-leader, which is NOT something drivers should be doing anyway. Follow-the-leader is what causes a good chunk of red-light running. People are set on autopilot, just blindly following the person in front of them. When someone is doing this in the left turn lane behind a guy pulling a U-turn...it breaks their auto-pilot, which upsets the lazy fuckers!

Again, If there is a vehicle directly behind you it is unsafe to do a U turn.
You can't be charged for making a U turn at an unposted intersection.
If an accident does happen or you are witnessed to have impeded traffic you can be charged, if the officer deems fit, under the HTA – section 141 or 142 if he believes you have made an unsafe turn.

What if there are cars making right turns into same direction of traffic as your right turn? I know a lot of people don't know how to make turns. They'll turn into wrong lanes. Meaning on a left turn instead of staying in the center lane they'll turn into the curb lane. There are also cars turning right into the center lane rather than staying on the curb lane. So a combination of these 2 and what do you have?

Same issue with no right on red signs. Sometimes allowed, sometimes not allowed.

IMO, they should not allow right on red because it can be tricky to look left to avoid other cars and then right to avoid pedestrians. It's even worse when the cross walk is a fair distance away from the intersection; you simply can't see pedestrians until you're almost on top of them.

can you elaborate on how having a car behind me makes my U-turn unsafe? I simply cannot see any connection. The only the problems are (1) the road is not wide enough to make a u-turn (in which case noone should make a u-turn anyway a "no u-turn" sigh should be posted) or (2) someone makes a right turn on red from the perpendicular street (in which case he must wait for me to do u-turn but he may not forget to do it, so, I will always check for such cars). But in no way the car behind me affects the "danger" of u-turn; u-turn as dangerous as a simple left turn. Other than that there is nothing dangerous about it except if a person who follows the u-turning car does not pay attention and slow down to make sure the car in front of him is actually gone.

Yep, in a perfect world with no traffic and no time constraint. In the real world it will add up a lot to traffic.

Even if they are just turning left across 2 lanes of traffic on a busy road at rush hour I get pissed off. Drive around the block you c*nt. I didn't think U turns were legal anywhere.
