Several times I have made a U-turn on a green left arrow and the car behind me has honked. Has this happened to anybody else? Why do people do this,? This is when there are no signs prohibiting U-turns
People tend to be unclear on when a U-turn is allowed at an intersection. We don't make it any clearer by sometimes posting "No U-turn" signs, sometimes posting "U-turn allowed" signs, and most often posting neither. If a U-turn is allowed at any intersection without a "No U-turn" sign, why do they sometimes post "U-turn allowed" signs? It confuses people who don't know it's otherwise legal. Also, when someone makes a U-turn, it's unexpected, so it jolts the driver behind. And for some reason, people are super quick to honk if they see something they don't like, rather than assess the situation first.Several times I have made a U-turn on a green left arrow and the car behind me has honked. Yeah, because that's what we need on our roads: more angry drivers. This happens all the time I just flip him the bird and move on.
You are correct and if someone is behind you when you make a U-turn you are doing it unsafely.People tend to be unclear on when a U-turn is allowed at an intersection. I avoid doing u-turns in intersections for the most part, but it hardly "fucks everything up for everyone" unless you're doing it wrong.I stand on the horn when some idiot pulls U turn from the left turning lane in front of me. High on the list of discourteous behaviour.
It fucks everything up for everyone. Make the turn as normal and turn by going around the block, or into the parking lot or whatever.
I am sure he appreciates your consideration for facilitating the event for him.I only do uturns under the covers
Again, If there is a vehicle directly behind you it is unsafe to do a U turn.I avoid doing u-turns in intersections for the most part, but it hardly "fucks everything up for everyone" unless you're doing it wrong.
There are two scenarios where it might fuck things up that aren't the fault of the U-turner. One: there's a guy trying to turn right into the lane you're pulling a U-turn into. Unless they have an advance right (which likely means U-turns are prohibited at that intersection), they are actually obligated to give way to you, but no one is watching for a u-turn, so it can get hairy. Even though the obligation is on them, I'd suggest not ever trusting that if you're pulling a U-turn in an intersection. Two: the guys behind you are playing follow-the-leader, which is NOT something drivers should be doing anyway. Follow-the-leader is what causes a good chunk of red-light running. People are set on autopilot, just blindly following the person in front of them. When someone is doing this in the left turn lane behind a guy pulling a U-turn...it breaks their auto-pilot, which upsets the lazy fuckers!
Same issue with no right on red signs. Sometimes allowed, sometimes not allowed.People tend to be unclear on when a U-turn is allowed at an intersection. can you elaborate on how having a car behind me makes my U-turn unsafe? I simply cannot see any connection. The only the problems are (1) the road is not wide enough to make a u-turn (in which case noone should make a u-turn anyway a "no u-turn" sigh should be posted) or (2) someone makes a right turn on red from the perpendicular street (in which case he must wait for me to do u-turn but he may not forget to do it, so, I will always check for such cars). But in no way the car behind me affects the "danger" of u-turn; u-turn as dangerous as a simple left turn. Other than that there is nothing dangerous about it except if a person who follows the u-turning car does not pay attention and slow down to make sure the car in front of him is actually gone.Again, If there is a vehicle directly behind you it is unsafe to do a U turn.
Yep, in a perfect world with no traffic and no time constraint. In the real world it will add up a lot to traffic.Same issue with no right on red signs. Sometimes allowed, sometimes not allowed.
IMO, they should not allow right on red because it can be tricky to look left to avoid other cars and then right to avoid pedestrians. It's even worse when the cross walk is a fair distance away from the intersection; you simply can't see pedestrians until you're almost on top of them.
