Cars honking at me for doing a U-turn

O

Maybe if everyone's GPS would stop telling people to make Uturns this madness would end.

Yep, in a perfect world with no traffic and no time constraint. In the real world it will add up a lot to traffic.
Yeah, in the real world cars and pedestrians frequently come into conflict because we're all hurrying too much and rules that are all over the place.

The only ones who are worse than pedestrian in following the rules are cyclists. If only we were able to get them off the road.

I honestly had no idea that u-turns at lights was an issue, as I always turn from the leftmost lane and don’t think it impacted other cars at all. In the States where I spent many years this has never been an issue and is very very common. Only when I moved to Canada did I notice that so many people honked, and wondered why,

I thought either they were upset because they thought it was illegal and honking their horn was more of a warning (such as that one would give if you went down a one-way street ), or angry for some other reason.

Your horn is to get someone’s attention Ann alert them of danger. Why do people think they have a horn to signal their displeasure at someone else’s driving. Don’t be one of those guys.

100% agree. And people are so quick to do it. They're so quick to do it, that they hit it before even assessing the situation and figuring out who is at fault. Or before they're fully out of danger. I've seen someone dodge a bad move by another driver, lay on the horn, flip the guy off, then rear-end the guy in front of them. Get your priorities straight, people!

The use of u-turns is something that's not widespread everywhere.
In most parts of Canada and the USA, it's fairly common, but if you drive in la belle province, and you do a u-turn, you're likely to get at least an earful, if not a fender full of number.

When I first moved to the GTA, I was astounded to see people doing u-turns everywhere, including on main arteries like Yonge, Steeles, Finch, etc.

Similar to the u-turn, the use of the horn is very different in QC.
Quebecers are a very horny bunch of drivers.
They honk at everyone for everything, especially u-turns.

I avoid doing u-turns in intersections for the most part, but it hardly "fucks everything up for everyone" unless you're doing it wrong.

There are two scenarios where it might fuck things up that aren't the fault of the U-turner. One: there's a guy trying to turn right into the lane you're pulling a U-turn into. Unless they have an advance right (which likely means U-turns are prohibited at that intersection), they are actually obligated to give way to you, but no one is watching for a u-turn, so it can get hairy. Even though the obligation is on them, I'd suggest not ever trusting that if you're pulling a U-turn in an intersection. Two: the guys behind you are playing follow-the-leader, which is NOT something drivers should be doing anyway. Follow-the-leader is what causes a good chunk of red-light running. People are set on autopilot, just blindly following the person in front of them. When someone is doing this in the left turn lane behind a guy pulling a U-turn...it breaks their auto-pilot, which upsets the lazy fuckers!
Signalized intersection with an advance green.

Advance Green initiates.

Fool in front of me hits the gas, picks up speed and then hits the brakes to pull a U turn. He literally is blocking the intersection while he slows down. This is not the kind of driver behaviour that one anticipates and yes, it fucks everything up for everyone behind the self absorbed fucker pulling the U turn. He's basically interfering with the normal flow of traffic and people are not anticipating that kind of behaviour.

You might call it "follow the leader", I dunno. But I call it stupid selfish fucker who creates a dangerous situation because he wants to do what he wants to do and everyone else can go pound salt as far as he's concerned.

Happens all the time.

Just make your turn and go around the block, or turn into the parking lot and turn around, but no, it's all about him.

Even if they are just turning left across 2 lanes of traffic on a busy road at rush hour I get pissed off. Drive around the block you c*nt. I didn't think U turns were legal anywhere.

]
I didn't think that they were legal either. Back in ancient times when I got my license, U turns in Ontario (as far as I recall) were not permitted under any circumstances. I was not aware that the law had changed.

I really don't care if someone does it in the middle of the road when there are no cars coming in either direction for a very long stretch. But in all other circumstances, especially intersections, NO.

Nothing wrong with a U-turn if there is no one coming towards you.

The people honking behind you have tiny insignificant brains to go with their tiny insignificant lives and honking gives them an instant of power before they’re back to their tiny lives.

In my home state of California, cars pull U-turns at intersections constantly and everyone is fine. Too many insignificant people on the roads in Ontario.

Yeah. I really don't understand how it affects the car behind me if I am doing a Uturn in the leftmost lane. I think maybe they don't know U Turns are legal. Never had a problem in the States, as everyone does it.

So who's house or business are we bulldozing for bike lanes?

There's plenty of blame to go around for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.

Of course this is not something that is allowed: this move is similar to turning left from the right lane when the left lane can go straight. However, the truck in frond of the guy in the car with the camera can do U-turn without any inconvenience to others. U-turns from the most left lane, if not specifically prohibited, are always allowed and pose no danger to anyone

100% on point . . . . .

Chronic Horn-hornkers are annoying as fuck! What they're doing is screaming at the top of the their lungs that they're pussies hiding from a safe distance in the safe confinement of their cars!

Heads-up . . . . . one day you're gonna pull that bullshit with the wrong guy! He's gonna hit the breaks, stop his car, grab something hard and heavy from the backseat, coming walking straight over to your car and bust your passenger-window....shatter like shit! If you're lucky and I'm R-E-A-L-L-Y lucky, he won't do the same thing to your face!

Think I'm pulling your dick, shit goes down every damn day . . . . . .

Exactly. I can see if I were making a u-turn in the right lane (with two left lanes turning left) how that could be dangerous because it crosses into the left lane, but if you're turning from the leftmost lane, it affects no one. Yet the car behind me will sometimes honk. I always wondered why.

I have a feeling that they are primarily women. I've noticed that women are 90% the ones who honk the horn for no good reason.

I rarely do U turns. You need to keep an eye on the opposite side traffic and the one turning right from your left. I would rather make the left get into a plaza and come out at the opposite direction. But then again tardiness isn't one of my concern so I don't have to rush.
Absolutely bang on!!! If you are going to make a U-turn, have the common sense to to ensure no one is turning right from your left.

Crazy how drivers have a lack of awareness of the flow of traffic and are oblivious to exposing drivers to the risk of an accident.

Here is a thought: have the common sense to plan ahead and know where you are going......if you miss a turn or plans suddenly change, as can easily happen, take your time and turn around using streets and plazas.

I almost got hit by someone doing a U-turn as I was making a right from their left hand side. The other driver didn't even look to see if anyone was turning right....luckily I was watching and as I started my turn I could see a U-turn was about to happen.

It affects drivers turning right from your left!!!!!
