Toronto Thinks Ontario's E-Learning Plan Is Trash, According To A TDSB Survey

A new poll run by the Toronto District School Board has found that the vast majority of students, parents, and teachers in the 6ix are opposed to the Ford government's plan to introduce mandatory e-learning. The proposal by the provincial PC government is a huge "no" from the thousands of people in the TDSB community. Perhaps most notably, a massive 97% of secondary school teachers said they do not support the policy.

Students, teachers, and parents were asked to vote in a recent TDSB survey called "The Pulse" asking if they support mandatory e-learning.

Approximately 5,000 people responded, and the results are unlikely to make pleasant reading for Ford and Co.

According to the TDSB's release, 428 students from Grades 7 to 12 responded. They were joined by 1,938 parents and 2,730 secondary school teachers.

The participants were randomly sampled, according to the release. The survey was conducted between January 30 and February 11.

The two major questions asked participants if they support the notion of mandatory e-learning, and if they think it's introduction across the board would benefit students.

The majority voted "no" to both.

TDSB Chair Robin Pilkey sent an open letter to Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce about the results.

"I want to make it clear that the board is not against e-learning," Pilkey wrote in the letter.

"However, our survey found that there are significant concerns among students, parents and teachers related to your government’s plan for mandatory e-learning, including that they do not believe it will benefit students.

"It is also concerning that our students are now choosing their courses for the upcoming school year, with little to no knowledge of what your government’s e-learning courses will look like."

The first question in the survey was: "Do you support the Ministry’s decision to require all students to take two e-learning/online learning credits in secondary school in order to graduate?"

87% of the students surveyed, 81% of the parents and/or guardians, and 97% of high-school teachers said "no."

The second question was: "In your opinion, would mandatory e-learning/online learning benefit students?"

67% of students said "no" with 21% marking themselves as unsure. Those figures were 65% and 18%, respectively, for parents and/or guardians.

Among secondary school teachers, arguably the group with the most information on whether mandatory e-learning would be productive, the "no" ratio soared to 91%. Only 3% said yes.

The survey came in the midst of widespread and long-lasting strike action across the province.

Most recently, massive crowds of elementary school teachers and their supporters shut down a section of Front Street in downtown Toronto.

Even the government's attempts at reparations have not come without trouble, as it turned out parents affected by strike action had been overpaid their allowance by mistake.

Teachers have been frustrated with the PC government over their cuts to education and attempt to pivot on policies, including not only the concept of compulsory e-learning but also increasing class sizes significantly.

Narcity reached out to TDSB and Stephen Lecce's office for comment.

That's no big surprise, its an incredibly stupid policy. Its only goal to produce more uneducated conservative voters.

Haha No bias here. TDSB survey....haha that’s hilarious!
eLearning has been proven to be successful and has been the norm in colleges/universities and the private sector for years.
Teachers are just afraid of losing their jobs to better technology like taxi companies we’re afraid of Uber and Blockbuster losing to Netflix.
Embrace change...it’s inevitable.

E-Learning for Primary students is a ridiculous idea. It is important for kids in their early life to be able to interact with other children.
No wonder only a tiny minority of Dumb DOFO's supporters would be acceptable to this suggestion. But then maybe those children will then have time on their hands to deal with street cocaine.
After all that is what Dumb DOFO specialised in!!

Are you really questioning a school board asking parents what they think?

And sorry but the few jurisdictions that have made e-learning mandatory to save money have been abysmal failures. There are a few places that have been successful but they instituted e-learning programs that have included additional staff to work with the kids, not fewer staff.

Every university on the planet uses eLearning.
Try again.

Not every University does so. Stop lying!!

So Chemistry, Physics, Biology and other Scientific Classes can be achieved by eLearning?? Maybe robots will teach these e-learners how to perform their Lab practicals!!

While the online courses may be better then your matchbook mail order courses, its pretty obvious they'll be worse for the students than what we have now.

Online courses are taught by teachers. You can interact with the teacher, record the session for later review, share content, and connect with other students.

Best of all, it’s good for the environment.

Nothing wrong with having some online courses to compliment in-school classes. Helps prepare students for how higher education institutions use it as well as the working world where it’s common place for years.

And did I mention it’s good for the environment?

Every University has ADULT students and university is voluntary. Schools teach children who are legally required to attend (even those one's you've acknowledged have trouble learning).

And why is it you suddenly want to ignore the results of high schools that have tried it?

University is voluntary but don't most high school students strive to continue to higher education? Why not prepare them?
Anyone who doesn't value elearning doesn't understand it. They just buy into the union propaganda which is only for preserving their membership numbers, ie money.
People tend to hate what they don't understand.

The future of education is elearning whether you like it or not. Don't be like Blockbuster and ignore the inevitable.

Stupidity like the above quote from you is "cornering" me??

Only in your own mythical Universe you can believe that. But take a few more puffs, as they could calm you down!!

On the other hand, maybe we can get Teacher Sophia to teach you the true meaning of "cornered"!!

Next thing you are going to say high schools should have classes of a couple hundred students to 'prepare them'.

Right.
Well smoking just a few times is like trying to smoke cigarettes and then finding that it was not for you. But dealing with street hashish and then lying that you did not though there were several witnesses who had similar accounts only makes dumb DOFO a liar. His brother denied smoking it until videos appeared and he was cornered. The rest of his family like his other brother went to jail because of his ties to the drug cartels and kidnapping. His own sister's husband was also jailed for threatening a mayor. She herself was shot in the face because of her ties to the drug cartels and the KKK. Enough said and only you can make such excuses for Dumb DOFO!!
