Judges' association calls emergency meeting in wake of Stone sentencing reversal

The independent Federal Judges Association is planning an emergency meeting to address issues stemming from the Justice Department's decision to intervene in the case involving Roger Stone, a longtime ally of President Trump.

Philadelphia U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe, president of the group, told USA Today that it “could not wait” until its spring conference to discuss the recent decisions made within the department and that its executive committee would convene a conference call on Tuesday after the department backtracked on its recommendation for Stone's sentence.

“There are plenty of issues that we are concerned about,” Rufe, who was nominated by former President George W. Bush, told the newspaper, noting that the group called for the meeting after Trump railed against the initial sentencing recommendation Stone received.

The group, which includes more than 1,100 federal jurists, did not immediately return a request for further comment from The Hill.

Attorney General William Barr and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are facing mounting scrutiny from lawmakers and former DOJ officials over the perception that Trump influenced their actions on Stone.

After the DOJ asked a judge last week for a lighter prison sentence for Stone than the seven to nine years that was initially recommended, the four federal prosecutors assigned to the case all resigned from it, with one leaving the DOJ altogether.

Prosecutors had told a judge that Stone should serve seven to nine years in prison for lying to Congress and obstruction. But one day later, DOJ said that the recommendation did not "accurately reflect" its position following vehement criticism from Trump.

Trump also targeted D.C. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is overseeing the Stone case, after the prosecutors' resignations, suggesting that she had treated his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort unfairly.

Manafort was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison after he was convicted on charges of bank and tax fraud and pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge.

Rufe told USA Today that the Federal Judges Association is “not inclined to get involved with an ongoing case." But she offered staunch support for Jackson, saying that the group is "supportive of any federal judge who does what is required.”

Barr has insisted that he did not speak with the White House before altering the sentencing recommendation for Stone, whose trial stemmed from crimes unearthed during former special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. He has since said, however, that Trump's tweets make it "impossible" for him to do his job.

More than 2,000 former Justice Department officials have signed on to a letter calling for Barr to resign, saying that his "actions in doing the President’s personal bidding unfortunately speak louder than his words."

The letter also calls on career officials to follow the "heroic example" set by the prosecutors who resigned from Stone's case and to be prepared to report "future abuse."

The Federal Judges Association was founded in 1982 and is a voluntary association that includes officers and directors from appeals and district courts around the country. The group's mission is to "sustain our system of justice through civics education and public outreach," according to its website.

Let's see how dumb this Association is. As dumb as it was for former DOJ officials to opine on this issue, it would be triply dumb for judges to weigh in. Judges set sentences, not the DOJ nor defence counsel. If a judge thinks the recommended sentence is too light, he/she is entitled to set whatever sentence is appropriate. However, it does not lie in mouths of judges to comment on the judgement of the AG in deciding to be directly involved in a particular file. In fact, some of these judges might actually have to sit on a case arising from such a circumstance. It would be foolish to comment upon it in advance (and grounds for recusal from such a case).

You can read? I thought your skill set ended at cutting and pasting! Keep up your efforts. If you read enough, eventually you will understand some of it.

I understand that you are out of touch with reality and can't get past a bad case of cognitive dissonance.

Are you saying that 2000+ former DOJ officials are the dumb ones to have an opinion about this Bandit Bill Barr's conduct in this whole Roger Stone Affair?? Really, and who are you to say so??
Reminds me of a certain individual who swore that James Fields was the innocent one, and that the Prosecutor's case was going to be thrown out as there was no real proof to convict him!!

Yes, I am. Sensible former DOJ "officials" (whatever "official" supposed to mean) just carry on enjoying the benefits of their private sector life, and don't allow themselves to become unpaid surrogates for any political party. Of course, they are free to express their opinions at the ballot box about allowing Trump to appoint the AG in November, just like anyone else.

CNN has really been bending the needle on the stupid meter by encouraging these phony plebiscites on political issues. What's next? 10000 former McDonalds employees tell you the best milkshake flavour is strawberry? LOL!

Really, and who are you to say so??
This one made me laugh. Who is ANYONE on an anonymous internet forum? I could tell you I'm Alan Dershowitz and you could claim you are the ghost of Mother Theresa. Appeals to authority are laughable here at TERB. No one with any real credentials would even admit to them, thereby exposing their identity.

You'll just have to deal with the REASONING of my opinions, or not. You can usually tell if someone knows what they are talking about from what they say. There are no credentials to post here.

You are just an echo of Trump with that CNN nonsense. The only fake news is Trump and his Fox cohorts. Why the hell then has Barr now stated that he cannot do his job with the constant rants from an idiot of a President?? He has considered the notion of resigning as well. Something that he should do, as it is idiotic for him to interfere in this case. After all it is the Judge that decides what would be a suitable sentence.... not Trump or Barr!!

These 4 Prosecutors came up with that decision autonomously, and not based on partisan lines that Barr wants them to follow based on what an idiot tweets. Just because Stone is a corrupt individual with ties to the President, does not mean that Barr has to interfere in this sentence. These DOJ officials know a lot more than you do, as all you do is to support any crap that Trump spews from his nostrils.

Not as funny as that certain bud plug who pleaded James Fields' innocence and passionately did so for one year. Dershowitz is suffering from Dementia. All he does is contradicts what he stood for in the past. No one takes him seriously any more as he was a clown show in the Impeachment trial. Those 2000+ former Justice Department officials that signed that petition, did so based on BIPARTISAN lines. Only the Trumptard cult followers cannot except that fact!!
