Another report on the local news tonight about the Chinese community of the GTA claiming they are experiencing racism due to the corona virus outbreak. Another politician(Ontario NDP leader) was there providing support. My question is have there been any verified accounts of this or is it just people claiming they feel discriminated against?

WOAH DOOD!

I sure love my carefully curated evening news, they would never lie to me or create problems where they don't exist to help push a particular agenda.

Racism is not due to the virus. The racism is always there bubbling beneath the surface. The virus creates an opening for it to be seen in full light. It helps people to justify voicing their hate.

It is the same rationale for the increase in racism in the U.S. The only difference is that the virus is does not create the opening. It is trump.

Here is a fairly common interaction with chinese tourists, absolutes pigs as tourists.
So are you saying that racism towards them is warranted?

Keeping in mind the title of this thread, that is the only conclusion that I can draw from your post.

I think because of their small stature they get a pass in society as the innocent, docile, harmless people. Some of the worst behaved and inconsiderate people you will ever encounter, aside from Asian Kelly, wherever she is.

More reasons why racism against the Chinese is warranted. I think you are allowed to actually say that instead of skirting around it.

If we are talking about hatred based on race, then there is something we should be aware of regarding China and America, and this coronavirus.

1. China has barred American CDC staff from entering China to help or gather data. This is type of cooperation probably a casualty due to recent geopolitical tensions.

2. You think China will give a flying fuck that coronavirus could spread in America. They won't, it their problem now. That will be their attitude.

Once this can of worms is opened, we go down a dangerous path.

Do you not think that protecting the world economy is in the interest of both countries and that controlling the virus and then eliminating it is a common interest?

Of course I do. That would be the right thing to do.

But, seeing that there is no interest from the Chinese to cooperate with the Americans, things are really going south.

In my estimation, when this happens, it will get worst.

Any reports no matter how minor of "racism", will only grease the slide downwards.

Most people are racist, they just usually stay racist in private and won’t admit it. Wherever there is an opportunity to be racist on a larger scale, that racism usually resurfaces. A lot of them already blamed the Chinese for the state of the housing market.
Racism usually starts with envy, we envy the Chinese for what they have, trillions in cash, throwing money everywhere. At the moment their economy is in shambles, the world unfortunately depends on them whether we admit it or not. The Chinese are willing to work for what they have, we are not. Their behavior stems from having nothing while growing up, now that they do they think money allows them the right to "bully" their way through.
wazup hate probably stems from one of his past experiences with a Chinese person, either romantic or professional.. don't hate the entire race cuz of a few bad apples..lol

A lot of this has been overblown by the news. We now see people celebrating a safe environment by patronizing chinese restaurants offering an Asialicious menu. All the patrons were Chinese-Canadians...who presumably were also the ones who stopped patronizing the Chinese restaurants when they were worried about the corona virus. So please look inward to the Chinese community to solve this problem rather than casting aspersions of racism.

The estimated deaths in the US ( 2018 ) due to influenza was 46,000 to 98,000. Deaths due to Coronavirus is approx 1800 worldwide to date. The vast majority of people recover from both viruses. Most people that die from either are from complications from advanced age and/or respiratory disease or past / current smokers.

I personally don't see it and here is why.

1. I'm not the type of person who frequents Asian markets. I don't go to pacific mall, I don't shop in their grocery type store. So just because I am still not going to the store and wouldn't go because they don't appeal to me and my lifestyle, I'm not racist for continuing to not use them.

2. It is mainly Chinese people avoiding their own markets. So if the majority of people who use these shops are Asian and those Asian people are avoiding them, are they being racist against their own kind?

I just don't see the "racism" in it. I'm open to someone pointing out the difference.

The corona virus is not racist, it doesn't discriminate at all, unlike mankind which is inherently racist. The flu shot used in Ontario is a live vaccine made from influenza outbreaks in centres China traditionally. I wonder how this will effect the 2020 flu shot program this year.

Regular flu death rate is 0.5%, Corona virus death rate so far is somewhere between 2-2.5%. You don’t see mass quarantines for regular flu like you’re seeing for this one, and that stat alone explains why.

I have talked about this subject with many people of Chinese origin both here in Toronto and in China. The quick answer to the question would be yes, it does appear that the Chinese are being blamed for this terrible virus that appears to be spreading throughout the world with sometimes tragic results, but mostly in the country where it started. Is this fair to those who are Chinese, especially in other parts of the world where there are so few cases of the virus (ie; Canada)? Personally, I don’t see it as fair especially when you see and hear some of the ridiculous comments made by some. But then again, just like my comment here is feuded by emotion, I can’t blame those who are scared of this potentially deadly virus, no matter how ignorant their comments and opinions are. This is probably where the “racism” term comes up. Maybe it is better to just write it off as being racist instead of calling someone stupid or ignorant.

In a city of millions, Toronto has only had a limited number of confirmed cases of coronavirus and no deaths. Whereas, each and every year hundreds of thousands get the flu and thousand die from complications of this “deadly” virus. Yet, this does not receive the negative attention the coronavirus virus is receiving. Maybe because it is new and has had deadly consequences in a country with over a billion people and wealth that has exploded more recently whereas the flu has been around forever and no matter what measures are taken, millions around the world still get it and hundreds of thousands die from it, young and old, men and women, EVERY YEAR!!! How much have these statistics changed how people act on a deadly basis. Do you stop using our overcrowded subways where there are thousands of sick people using it everyday. Does it stop you from going to large events like a hockey or basketball game or concert where thousands are in attendance with hundreds potentially having a deadly virus. Not really, it is almost like the flu virus has become an accepted deadly virus because it has been around for so long and at least some measures are being taken to safeguard those, especially the more vulnerable, from getting it. Regardless, millions still get it and hundreds of thousand still die from it.

Like racism, most opinions are based on emotion or personal experiences and not actual facts. My comments are no different. I am scared of potentially getting the flu or coronavirus because of my personal situation just like I am afraid to go into some areas of Toronto because of the fear of being robbed, attacked or killed. I will avoid situations or areas where there is a higher chance of getting sick or harmed. I am only human.

Paradise by the dashboard light.
I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. Martin Luther King, Jr.
