Romney not welcome at CPAC after impeachment witness vote

The former party nominee and Sen. Susan Collins were the only Republicans to side with Democrats in voting to hear witnesses in the impeachment trial.

Sen. Mitt Romney will not be invited to this year's CPAC, the conservative conference's host chair announced Friday in the aftermath of senators voting not to hear additional witnesses in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.

"BREAKING: The "extreme conservative" and Junior Senator from the great state of Utah, @SenatorRomney is formally NOT invited to #CPAC2020," tweeted Matt Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union, which hosts the conference.

The former party nominee and Sen. Susan Collins were the only Republicans to side with Democrats in voting to hear witnesses in the impeachment trial.

The vote failed, all but guaranteeing Trump's acquittal next week.

While CPAC has grown into a hotbed of Trumpian support, Romney has distanced himself from the president, garnering Trump's mockery and scorn.

Trump's antipathy toward Romney long predates his impeachment, and the president has run supercuts of Romney's defeat in the 2012 presidential election to mock the senator.

Romney called for more information as reports first circulated of Trump pushing Ukraine to investigate his political rivals.

"If the President asked or pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival, either directly or through his personal attorney, it would be troubling in the extreme. Critical for the facts to come out," Romney tweeted in September.

Trump was charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after pushing Ukrainian officials to publicly launch a corruption investigation into the son of Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Mike Lee, Utah's Republican senior senator and a frequent CPAC attendee, tweeted a message of support shortly after Schlapp's announcement.

"Mitt Romney is a good friend and an excellent Senator. We have disagreed about a lot in this trial. But he has my respect for the thoughtfulness, integrity, and guts he has shown throughout this process," Lee wrote. "Utah and the Senate are lucky to have him."

Romney has previously spoken at the annual conservative conference including his first public speech since losing the 2012 election. He also spoke at CPAC in 2012 calling himself a "severely conservative governor" in an effort to shore up more support from the party's right as he sought the nomination.

Romney has terrible political instincts and is extremely fragile as a political operative. Ted Cruz came out of the primaries a defeated man and a persona non grata in the party led by Trump. But, he saw the writing on the wall, took time to think, reached the correct conclusion and in two years became the pillar of the Senate with an incredible level of support among the Republican membership. In the post Trump primaries he will be the leading candidate with a tremendous rep and ability to raise cash. Today's vote, on the other hand, finished Romney as a force in the Republican Party, once and for all. ************ Delecto is no more! Sad part is that be doesn't even know it.

Romney voted with his conscience, and he will be found to be absolutely right in this instance. If 75% of the country wanted to have the witnesses testifying along with the documentation then no doubt there will still be a substantial number of voters that will favour his stance. CPAC is just too politicized to be of much relevance in this day and age. Romney can get the upper hand when all the dirt on Trump is revealed by Bolton, and he will get the last word in!!

Actually, CPAC is a huge deal. It's THE social and political event of the year and this is the election year. Not being invited, if you're a Republican Senator and a former presidential candidate, is a loud and clear message to Romney that his political future on the conservative side is over.

I wonder if Romney cares.
He didn't get an invite to a circle jerk party. Sure, he didn't get invited to a party. But it's a circle jerk.

Its probably time to start bailing on the GOP now that they are going all Nixon like with their Trump can do no evil schtick.
Probably he's looking ahead and seeing the Giuliani Ukrainian expeditions coming to light and trying to keep some distance.
Voting to acquit this noxious criminal is the point of no return for the Republican Party
Today Republicans make it official: Out of sheer lust for power, they've rejected democracy and basic decency

Maybe you think that this whole Ukraine issue is water under the bridge. The freedom of information acts and leakages will bring a lot more information to light, that will display the level of corruption of this CPAC and the rest of the Republicans!!

Yeah, you keep clinging to hope. Frankie and the rest used to say exactly the same thing about the Mueller investigation. There are only two ways this president is leaving- death or the failure in November. It was foolish of Pelosi to allow impeachment to go forward as now she has nothing, zero, zilch, nada to show for the last two years under her leadership in the House. Schiff conned her like he try to con the American people with his "evidence" of collusion.

I love how the left now embraces Mitt Romney and John Bolton as honorable, truthful and patriotic when just a short time ago they were absolutely vilified by them. Look up hypocrisy in the dictionary and you will get a picture of a Democrat voter. Pathetic.

Bolton was and is a warmonger.
But he at least isn't corrupt like Trump.

Just like you guys are now in love with Moscow Mitch, eh?

Um....

Personally I'd say being a war monger is far worse. You know, because of needless to innocent people and all that.

I dunno, I think being a corrupt racist moron is likely worse.
Good debate though, who really is worse, Bolton or Trump.

I'm still giving Trump the edge since he's a warmonger as well but also a white extremist.

You guys started all this nonsense with Hillary Clinton and "Jail her" plus her "Corruption" and how she will be going to be indicted. But the real criminal is Trump. If he was not the President he would be in jail just like his lawyer Cohen who he threw under the bus. Couple that with his numerous associates and campaign staff ending up in jail, under investigation or indicted. Once again Mueller clearly stated that he did not "exonerate" Trump. That is where Barr took over and closed the investigation. Pelosi did exactly the right thing about upholding The Constitution. Impeachment was the right step. Well this has not gone away, as more and more laws are coming out to show the extent of this Quid Pro Quo etc. Now all of a sudden Rubio is a bad guy because he spoke out what he thought was his opinion. But Bolton was "patriotic" and a "Tough Guy" when he was nominated to be in the Whitehouse. Once he left, like the rest of Trump's staff, then he is now the bad guy as well. So John Kelly also supports Bolton and his account. Would you consider him to be a bad guy like Bolton and Rubio???

By the way Pelosi and The rest of the House have PASSED numerous BIPARTISAN Bills that are sitting on Moscow Mitch's desk. Moscow Mitch is the one that only tries to protect Trump and does sweet nothing else!!

I seriously struggle to understand that man. Surely he new that an opposition to the leader of the Republicans, with over 90% approval(consistently), would destroy whatever credibility he had left. And it's not the first time he did that. He might be going for the McCain model, but McCain had the war rep and decades of simply being present with some serious legislative accomplishments. Also McCain operated in far less partisan times. Romney has a nice family and a pile of cash, but politics is clearly not his thing.

No, he is deeply flawed: he is honest (comparatively speaking)

He's not due for re-election until 2024. I hope recall works this guy is not doing what voters put him in Washington to do.
