Hundreds of thousands gather in Baghdad demanding US forces leave

BY MARTY JOHNSON

Massive crowds filled the streets of Baghdad on Friday, protesting the presence of American troops in the country.

The protest was organized by anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and was given legitimacy by Iraqi armed forces that have close ties to Iran, The New York Times reports. Al-Sadr called for a "million man march."

The protests come three weeks after President Trump authorized an airstrike in the country that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Iran retaliated against the U.S. a few days later, launching a missile strike at two military bases in Iraq that house U.S. troops.

The breach of Iraqi sovereignty and the subsequent heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran led Iraq's Parliament to pass a resolution calling for American troops to leave, though a specific timeline was not set.

According to the Times, people from across the country were being bused in for the protests.

There was a heavy security presence surrounding the march's path and the Green Zone that houses the U.S. Embassy, according to a report by CNN.

Before the hit on the terrorist guy, tens of thousands Iraqi's had been protesting against Iranian government's activities there (including Solemeini's). Seems they are consistent about wanting other countries out of their business.

If the Americans leave, there will be a horrible civil war. Millions will die and/or flee to Western Europe.

Yup. But so did Obama.
That's ok, "Bomber Bernie" isn't going to be any better.

(That's not fair. I suspect whoever wins in 2016 will manage to get us out of Afghanistan. The public support for that is extremely high now. Anywhere else.. difficult.)

Yes to your first statement. It's amazing how U.S. military presence abroad really doesn't change from administration to administration. Thanks Bush/Cheney.

I might sound a bit arrogant, but I am certain who will win in 2016. As far as 2020, you are correct we will leave Afghanistan to the wolves. I actually think Trump will announce leavng before the election. (Prediction: Liberal media will state that the withdrawal is politically motivated Duh* and the same parrots will be active here.)

* Yes, Presidents do things that our popular with the American people.

Iraq-----Yikes, one horrible civil war! Iraqi Shias marching for the U.S. withdrawal is hardly surprising.

Some rockets hit the US embassy in Iraq.. so things are heating up. They can't really blame Iran for this one, if Iran wanted to wipe out the US embassy they have proven they can do it.

Chicken little.
Everyone got to stick to the facts. Full stop. There is no other choice.

If the Americans leave Iraq, there could be another civil war. More likely 90% chance is Iran takes over Iraq.

If the Americans stay indefinitely in Iraq, there still could be another civil war. The world already saw one with Daesh already.

Dubya Bush should have listened to General Colin Powell when he advised him, "you break it, you bought it", but Bush being the dummy he is listened to the neo-cons who are even dumber, and here we are.

There already has been. Why do you think there have been years of suicide bombings and terror attacks targeting civilians on all sides? All that would change if the US/NATO leave is that it will only be Iran, Saudi, Turkey, and Russia meddling in the country (because we know they won't leave).

Not that we can do anything about it now but part of the problem is the Brits forced three ethnic groups together despite extensive histories of hostility between them.

Been happening pretty consistently even before the US hit Mr. terror bigshot. Only difference is that this was the first direct hit on the embassy in a while. And yes, in all these cases, they seem to be Iranian backed militias so either Iran is behind it or at best refusing to stop them.

It is also quite interesting to read up on the anti-government protests in both Iraq and Lebanon. The most interesting aspect is the protests don't fit neatly into any outside narrative. In both countries they are upset about foreign involvement but the people's main issue is the massive corruption combined with deteriorating economies.

The only politicised part of it is the Iran backed parties are trying to hold onto power while the other parties are more willing to (pretend?) to accept the people's demands.
