I went through a SARS quarantine, I hope this doesn't make its way here.

17 More People Diagnosed With Deadly Viral Pneumonia in China

BY YANAN WANG / AP

9:40 AM EST

(BEIJING) — Seventeen more people in central China have been diagnosed with a new form of viral pneumonia that has killed two patients and placed other countries on alert as millions of Chinese travel for Lunar New Year holidays.

In total, 62 cases of the novel coronavirus have been identified in the city of Wuhan, where the virus appears to have originated. The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission reported the new cases in a statement Sunday.

Nineteen of those individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while two men in their 60s — one with severe preexisting conditions — have died from the illness. Eight are in critical condition.

At least a half-dozen countries in Asia and three U.S. airports have started screening incoming airline passengers from central China. The list includes Thailand and Japan, which have together reported three cases of the disease in people who had come from Wuhan.

In the most recently diagnosed group, ages ranged between 30 and 79, Wuhan’s health commission said. Their initial symptoms were fever and cough.

The health commission’s statement did not say whether these patients had visited the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which has been suspended after many infected individuals reported having either worked at or visited the venue.

Li Gang, director and chief physician of the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told state broadcaster CCTV that “the infectivity of the new coronavirus is not strong.” Infectivity refers to how rapidly the virus may spread between individuals.

Most patients are experiencing mild symptoms, Li said, and no related cases have been found in more than 700 people who came into close contact with infected patients.

This “does not rule out the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission, but the risk of continuous human-to-human transmission is low,” Li said. “With the implementation of our various prevention and control measures, the epidemic can be prevented and controlled.”

The Chinese government is keen to avoid a repeat of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, another coronavirus that started in southern China in late 2002 and spread to more than two dozen countries, killing nearly 800 people.

I wonder how this new virus compares to the good old flu?

"While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9.3 million – 49.0 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 960,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 79,000 deaths annually since 2010."

That's in the US alone.

Generally, pneumonia is more dangerous than influenza, at least if it is a viral Pneumonia.

In a world run by reason and logic all travel to and from China would have been stopped until the threat has ended. Unfortunately that's not the world we live in.

Just want to point out with all the fearmongering going on about this: thus far, it’s had about a 2% mortality rate and most of those deaths were older men with pre-existing health issues. Not saying this isn’t an issue at all, but let’s have a little perspective. The media’s gonna be screaming at us about how scary this is over the coming weeks and months because fear sells, but the reality is, this doesn’t seem to be particularly dangerous. I remember all the scare tactics with the bird flu, H1-N1, Ebola, etc., and they all turned out to be pretty much a big load of nothing. Obviously take sensible precautions, maybe don’t make out with any farmers from rural China, but I don’t think we likely have much to worry about.
Maybe, but I would not be so sure. As soon as a virus has jumped to humans, it can and will mutate and could easily become more deadly. Hopefully it will not.

I heard from private sources that a girl in Oakville is in ECU after visiting Wuhan.

Maybe an alarmist rumour.

Well, we are in the flue season. Separating regular seasonal sickness from the Chinese one might be a problem and a cause for a genuine panic if this thing spreads. I was having lunch by the airport, today. One after another plane coming in with "China" markings. Why not stop the flights for a couple of weeks until the Chinese get the handle on the situation? SARS killed 44 people and caused millions in damages. In the old days quarantine was a fact of life and there was no jet travel.

This is kind of my point, though. SARS was considered an extremely serious outbreak at the time, and is still being alluded to today. SARS actually killed just under 800 people worldwide. That is not a big number in the grand scheme of things. There are about 7.5 billion people on earth. 800 is less than a drop in the bucket, and most of them probably had other health issues. More people are killed by deer each year than were killed by SARS. This is what I mean when I say we need to keep things in perspective. The prospect of a pandemic is scary and it’s ratings gold for the media, but it seems extremely unlikely that anyone posting here will be affected by it. As was said above, it’s more risky crossing the street.
I agree. However, a Chinese flue panic in the middle of our flue season might have very serious consequences. Anyone with the sniffles will be at the emergency in hospital demanding to be saved. It's just the way people are.
