I heard from private sources that a girl in Oakville is in ECU after visiting Wuhan.

Maybe an alarmist rumour.
Perhaps; but so many Chinese are moving into Oakville that it's hard not to notice; gotta park all that money in Canadian Real-Estate before the Communist Party takes it all from them.

Anyone else think this is being overblown?

If we look at the common flu this year, its being recorded to have infected 12,168 people in Canada (https://ipac-canada.org/influenza-resources.php) and typically there's around 3500 deaths in Canada as a result of the flu per year (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/flu-influenza/health-professionals.html)

Not saying that its not worth being vigilant about this virus coming out of China, but the flu seems to dwarf the numbers of infected and deaths from this thing and there isn't any alarm over the flu.

That’s exactly what I was saying. No one cares about the flu, it’s old news, but this thing is new and sexy, the media must be creaming themselves. Same with SARS, H1-N1, bird flu, Ebola, West Nile, Zika, etc. All were supposedly a huge, scary thing that was gonna wipe us all out, according to the media. All turned out to be total nothingburgers. I’m really not sure why certain members here seem to be trying to make this out to be such a terrifying thing. It’s killed 20 odd people so far, most of whom were already old and sick. More people than that died today from the flu. Hell, more people were probably killed by pigs so far this year than this virus has killed (especially if you count all the coronaries bacon’s caused!).

Chill, people. There’s nothing so far to indicate that this is any worse than any of those other wet farts of supposedly apocalyptic plagues.
So what you are saying is you are right and first-line health workers are over-reacting by wearing full haz-mat gear when attending to these victims. Got it
There are reasons why this is in the news and entire cities are quarantined. For the average layman to dismiss it is ridiculous

GTA & Thereabouts...
Have they proven it came from bats?

I watched a documentary on this little flying fuckers. Their immune system is impressive. It doesn't overreact and keeps everything 'cool'. They are chalk full of viral shit.

They were doing that with all these other outbreaks as well, minus the quarantine cities. Quarantining cities, though, isn’t because this particular virus is necessarily any more dangerous than the others. It’s because SARS was an embarrassment to the Chinese government. They had to admit that they bungled the containment effort, and losing face is about the worst thing that can happen in that culture. They’re making a big show of quarantining cities, walking around spraying everything with disinfectant (which is basically useless), so that if this does wind up spreading, they can’t be blamed for not doing enough this time. You should really read up on the SARS outbreak, particularly the political ramifications.

I’m not saying that it’s 100% nothing, but it is definitely being overblown both by the media for views/clicks, and by the Chinese government to save face. I could be wrong, it could wind up being a very serious pandemic, I hope not, but I don’t think I am.
My friend who is Chinese who has friends and family in those cities that have been quarantined says its actually much worse than the media portrays . Ppl collapsing just like you would see in movies. Long line ups in hospitals waiting to be treated. Ppl bulking up on food and water. Its very unsettling down there right now and a sense of hidden panic in ppl.

The poster before you gave flu mortality numbers higher than Wuhan so therefore his conclusion is flu is more serious than this and you agreed. That is why I responded. There are many factors to consider other than a mortality number to determine the seriousness of this pathogen.

Well, yes and no. I mean, if there was a pathogen that spread like wildfire and was infecting millions every day, but only caused you to have a runny nose for a few days, it wouldn’t be very serious. This is my point. People are acting like millions of people are just dropping dead in the streets, and that’s not the case. The facts are that at present time, there is absolutely no reason to believe that anyone here is in any danger, and whipping people into a panic is irresponsible and dangerous.
I don't see anyone in Toronto in a panic. Most people I know outside of the Asian community aren't even aware of it. But it is equally irresponsible and dangerous to tell people to just ignore it as something less than the flu. Try telling that to the people in Wuhan

We shall know more in I believe 7-14 days how this will turn up here after the incubation period. The reason I am so passionate in this response is I was in the front-lines of SARS 2003. I don't want to go through that again here

I’m not saying that people here are panicking, but it’s all over the media, and there are even people here posting all kinds of stuff that makes it seem far worse than it actually is. Again, I’m not dismissing it, it needs to be addressed and seemingly is, I’m just trying to remind the people posting this sort of stuff that the media does this every time there’s a new virus that pops up and to just think critically and not be reactionary.

Again, the situation in Wuhan is bad, but a lot of it is for the benefit of the rest of the world, frankly. The Chinese government doesn’t really give a fuck about their own people, what they do care about is not being made to look incompetent on a global scale again. If they have to quarantine a few cities and make millions of people’s lives miserable in order to save face, you can bet they’re going to do that.
I honestly hope you are right and it is just overblown. But when the first case hits Toronto, and I really cannot see it not happening, either here or Vancouver, make no mistake, there will be mass panic here

On a slight tangent, this being an escort board, anyone remember how the SP business was when SARS hit? I imagine business will plunge, especially the Asian agencies

Was wondering about that myself actually, would be interesting to hear what was going on in the industry, was just a wee lad myself when SARS hit.

A quick google search shows that SARS killed 775 people during its 9 month outbreak...again that's minuscule compared to the flu. So why was SARS such a big deal? I do remember that the virus hit you pretty hard so it was an intense, but was that it?
