I miss the old CRT TVs

CRTs are really good for playing old retro video game consoles on, I like to go back and play old PS2 games but they look awful on modern TVs because they are running on such a low resolution the TV stretches the image, and you can see every jaggie and imperfection, where as CRTs could hide all that.

sold mine many years ago to someone who claimed to want it to play video games. When I bought it new it was $1000. Sold it to him for $25 in great condition. He was a happy camper. That thing was if I remember correctly about 80 lbs.

On a related note, does anyone else remember how many tv repair shops there used to be in the 70's and 80's? Now, hardly any.

I had a Sony 36 or 38 inch and between its weight and size it was impossible for one man to pick it up.

anybody here miss those CRT or cathode ray tube TVs? I do

Back in the day when the flat screens were starting to come out people used to put those old sets at the curb . I used to collect them and bring them to the scrap yard . I got paid some good money for those things . Scrap yards still take them today but of course you have to make it worth your while to go .

I've got 2 of those . Both are working just fine . I use the smaller one to reset my dish when I point my satellite up at my trailer every time I go . This way I don't need a second person to set my dish .

I want to find one but only for the look, not for actual use. I'd like to find a vintage 60's or 70's one.....maybe green.
I bought one NOS from the 60's on eBay about a year ago hoping to use it as a vintage, yet functional piece for my new kitchen. When we moved in and the phone company arrived to set everything up, they told me they couldn't make it work because they aren't universal wall attachments anymore and they don't have the proper hardware/connectors anymore to mount and connect the unit to the wiring in the wall. Sadly, I had to toss it out as useless.

I've seen the old console TVs used for various expressive pieces including an aquarium. Many of the old consoles have cabinets and can hold things on top like a parsons table.

Avocado green would be the coolest color MissCroft.

As a younger lad if a neighbour was binning a CRT telly we'd nick it from the rubbish and bowl cricket balls at pace to try to implode the tube in a satisfying mini explosion lol. Some were pretty thick and you really had to nail it straight on lol.

I think this is the case of having a lousy installer. There are a lot of options available, including the ability to trans-code digital feeds. I am not sure it is worth the hassle, but then again I still run a lot of monster analog sources, including studio quality reel to reel decks.
I agree - in today's world, and with the tech available, anything is possible. I think it was just a lazy technican's polite way of telling me to fuck off. :drum:

That's because everything's disposable these days. I bought a 65" TV with extended warranty from Costco for my cottage. When I turned it on, I noticed it had couple burnt out pixels in the bottom left corner. I contacted the manufacturer and sent them photos of the dead pixels. They said it can't be fixed and to exchange it for a new one. When I explained that wasn't convenient as it was up north at my cottage, they offered a full refund. All I had to do was peel off the serial number sticker, cut it into 4 pieces and send them a photo of it.

They said I could either dispose of the TV or keep it. Since you can hardly notice the dead pixels, I kept it. Then I went back to Costco and got a refund for my extended warranty. lol

re. picture quality they still deliver reference black levels that digital displays have a hard time delivering.
I beg to differ. Have you not seen Plasma or OLED TVs?

Whoever told you that, based on wall connectors, was ignorant. Just change the wiring. Whether pulse dialing works on the telephone network is another matter, however. I still have on rotary desk unit that I keep for sentimental value, and to piss off the wife, who wants me to purge all my stuff, including archives of old electronics journals, and my dissertation.

If you want one, I have an old 27" taking up space in storage. Make an offer.

I was watching a 27" JVC CRT TV downstairs until a couple of years ago. I was ok with it. Then I found a 24" HD TV one of my neighbors put out on the curb. So, I hooked it to a Rogers cable box I found on another neighbor's lawn. The only thing missing is the TV remote.

I think people are switching to 4K TV's and 4K Rogers cable boxes.
