In 1965, Brown was charged with assault and battery after an 18-year-old woman alleged he forced her to have sex. He was acquitted by a jury.

In 1969, Brown was charged with assaulting a man over a traffic incident. He was acquitted.

In 1971, he was charged with battering two women. Both women chose not to testify.

In 1978, he spent a day in jail after beating a golfing partner.

In 1985, charges of rape, sexual battery, and assault against Brown were dropped after the 33-year-old woman who made the claims gave inconsistent testimony.

In 1986, Brown went to jail for allegedly beating his 21-year-old fiancée. A few days later, she informed authorities that she didn't want to press charges.

And in 1999, Brown was convicted after working out his frustrations on his 25-year-old wife's car. She previously claimed he was violent and abusive, but later testified that that was not true.

For the 1999 conviction, Brown was sentenced to probation and ordered to attend spousal-abuse counseling. He refused, asserting that the incident had nothing to do with domestic violence. For that remark, he enjoyed a brief trip to the slammer.

Yet today he seemingly has completely rehabilitated his image. Which was very tarnished in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Now a days he presents himself as a voice of reason for young black inner city youths.

He has a real conciliatory tone to his words which effectively resonates with his audience. Always wearing his signature Kufi hat.

On a personal note I believe he is the best player to ever step on a gridiron. I can only imagine the amount of racism he must of faced.

Yes I think performance wise only Lawrence Taylor could compare. But he was on the other side of the ball.

Like Brown LT changed the whole complexion of the game.
The only other name that I've heard mentioned as possibly better than Brown was Jerry Rice.

Maybe it's just a coincidence but both this thread and the one questioning the validity of DiMaggio's hit streak have the common theme of lessening the accomplishments or besmirching the reputations of a couple of old time all-time legends.

Besmirching is way too strong. In DiMaggio's case I think the breaks that he received were home town decisions and would not have worked today and this deprives present day players of a chance, ever, of the record. As for Jim Brown, he would never have been able to skate by his infamous past in todays' system of justice. AND with those issues I doubt that he would make the Hall of Fame today. That said, his on field accomplishments are a candidate for the greatest ever player. In that sense he is to be admired much like OJ Simpson who rushed for 2003 yards in a 14 game season is superlative and superior to the current record of 2105 in 16 games. There is nothing wrong with taking a comprehensive look at our current or latter day heros.

Many if not most famous celebrities are assholes, no surprise here.
Being told all your life by adoring fans how great you are will have that effect.
