The parliament, which is controlled by Shias, requested all foreign troops to leave. The Kurds and Sunnis actually were against it, the former left the building in protest
but so be it, there was only 5K troops in Iraq, and these were mostly advisors and ground forces to coordinate air strikes. ISIL is not our problem, it never was

Iran can't close the strait, not without total war, then by the time it reopens, a few days after, not a single iranian ship would be afloat, not a single iranian oil refinery intact. Prices will go up, which will be bad for China, but great news for us because we don't need their oil, we just need to build more pipelines
Iran can mine the strait and also has lots of land to sea cruise missiles now.
After Saudi was hit by cruise missiles the US should be way more cautious, but Trump is a moron.

No, it’s a twofer, kill a terrorist bastard, get political coverage to leave Iraq to continue its mean revision to sectarian shit hole status. Now, if the Euro powers would just kick the US out of NATO for blowing up the Iran deal and putting a wrinkle in their plans to trade with terrorists we could score a hat trick.
Wait, who's the terrorist again?

Remember in 2016 when Trump accused Obama of “founding ISIS”?

"I don't care," Trump said, according to a show transcript. "He was the founder. His, the way he got out of Iraq was that that was the founding of ISIS, okay?"

Trump just confirmed he's a terrorist bastard too, by the way.
Said he'll target civilian historic sites.
They also killed the Iraqi PMF commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who was instrumental in eventually defeating ISIS. This was done on Iraqi soil. Yet not one US Government official has shown any concern for doing so. Do they consider this PMF Commander to be a "terrorist" who was involved in the elimination of terrorists in Iraq??

USA is the largest consumer of energy in the world.

If the straight of Hormuz closes, oil prices goes up everywhere, even in places that supposedly are self sufficient in oil. That is the the way the capitalistic system works, folks.
And for countries that produce it it’s both a cost and a benefit.

If Iran wants to bring the entire word down on its head it would do this. Think how screwed the Chinese would be.

Tell that to your fellow Americans when the oil companies' profits surges and gas is $15 a gallon.

As of 11 PM, stock futures are down, oil futures is up

Oh no!

“ Iraq's parliament reportedly voted on Sunday to expel the U.S. military from the country after an American airstrike killed top Iranian military commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.”

https://thehill.com/policy/international/476818-iraqs-parliament-votes-to-expel-us-military
The US is now threatening sanctions against Iraq for asking them to leave

“The president also issued a threat to Baghdad after the Iraqi parliament backed a resolution calling for US and other foreign troops to leave the country.

Trump said if Iraq asked US forces to leave and it was not done on a friendly basis, "we will charge them sanctions like they've never seen before ever. It'll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame."

"We have a very extraordinarily expensive airbase that's there. It cost billions of dollars to build, long before my time. We're not leaving unless they pay us back for it," Trump told reporters.”

Actually it was Frontline (PBS) that made that case.
Yup and the US just bombed the Iraqi militia that played a big part in defeating them in Iraq, and then droned their commanders. So what does that tell you about the US and ISIS...plus they are staying in Syria to protect them and abandoned the Kurds who were wiping them out. US = IS

Iraq invited Soleimani at the request of Saudi Arabia for peace talks.
That's why he was there.

As Abdulmahdi told the story, Saudi Arabia had contacted him, seeking his mediation to cool down Riyadh’s conflict with Iran. Abdulmahdi said he sent the Saudi message to Tehran, and then invited Soleimani to come give the reply. (Soleimani came openly to Iraq on a commercial airliner and went through passport control with his diplomatic passport. There was nothing covert about the visit). Soleimani was on his way to consultations with his host, Abdulmahdi, when Trump rubbed him out.

Tail between legs. Kicked out by a one time friend.

MAGA. So much WINNING!

Who wins from this?..... Iran moves right in. Russia moves right in. China moves right in. America looks like a total PoS throughout the entire MidEast. Just like after Trump lynched the Kurds who relied on him to protect them. So much WINNING!

MAGA!

The secretary of Defense now says the letter was a "mistake".

There appears to be total confusion at Defence as to who wrote the letter, what it is or why it was sent.

What a total fuckage!

UPDATE: WASHINGTON, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The United States has no plans to pull out militarily from Iraq, Defense Secretary Mark Esper told Pentagon reporters on Monday, following reports by Reuters and other media of a U.S. military letter about a withdrawal.

"There's been no decision whatsoever to leave Iraq," Esper said, when asked about the letter, adding there had also been no plans issued to prepare to leave.
"I don't know what that letter is ... We're trying to find out where that's coming from, what that is. But there's been no decision made to leave Iraq. Period."
Esper added the United States was still committed to countering Islamic State in Iraq, alongside America's allies and partners.
EARLIER: BAGHDAD, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The United States military wrote to Iraq on Monday saying it would pull out of the country and would be repositioning forces over the next few days and weeks, a letter seen by Reuters showed.
It was not immediately clear if all roughly 5,000 U.S. troops would leave Iraq.
Several helicopters could be heard flying over Baghdad on Monday night. It was not immediately clear if this was a related development. The letter said coalition forces would be using helicopters to evacuate.
"Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement," read the letter.
It was signed by United States Marine Corps Brigadier General William H. Seely III, commanding general of Task Force Iraq, the U.S.-led military coalition against Islamic State
The authenticity of the letter, which was addressed to the Iraqi defense ministry's Combined Joint Operations Baghdad, was confirmed to Reuters independently by an Iraqi military source.
"We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure," it said.
In Washington, a Pentagon spokesman said he could not immediately confirm its authenticity.
The letter said: "During this time, there will be an increase in helicopter travel in and around the International Zone (IZ) of Baghdad."
The International Zone is the formal name of Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone which houses government buildings and foreign missions.
