Since the general thread on the Toronto Maple Leafs seems to have been vanished, here's a new place to discuss Maple Leafs events, news, points of view and yes, even Guy Lapointe.

Welcome back Wilma.
Let's see:

Wilma is (typically) a female name.

If you're referring to me, I completely don't get the reference.
I've been away from the board for 4-5 days, so, thanks for the welcome back?

If you're referring to William Nylander, well, wouldn't that be even more impressive and newsworthy?
If William is actually Wilma, a woman, playing NHL hockey~the 1st to do so in regular season games, and quite adeptly, that is historic and fantastic.

Mikheyev out for the rest of the season after surgery to repair serious laceration to his wrist last night. He will be out several months.

Wow. I wonder if he wears the shorter and less protective yet more free moving gloves. Could it have been prevented?

He's a solid soldier whose loss will have some impact in terms of depth.

I believe he was alluding to Nylander's less than truculent style of play.

Personally I can't deny William has an incredibly high skill level and it's good to see him reap the benefits this year thus far.

One thing I do notice is that despite the sport, players that hold out for significant periods of time usually struggle mightily when they return.

So my contention is that last years production was probably an aberration from him. Which is good news for Leaf fans I'm sure.

It is now being reported that he'll be out minimum 3 months, which would put his return (at earliest) late March.
Depending upon recovery, he might be available later in the playoffs, depending on if/how far the Maple Leafs progress.

An observation. Just saw Tavares talking about how so many players were impacted by Mikheyev's injury and how they are all wearing sharp skates so they need to be extra careful and a lot of them are contemplating wearing kevlar sleeve/wrist protectors.

Question: In that case, why are none of them wearing throat/neck protectors? A cut to the throat has much more risk of a devastating injury than to a wrist.

Less vulnerable?.. A wrist or arm can stretch out on the ice and get slashed far more easily than a neck.

What an amazing goal by Nylander. He caps off the winner last night with another amazing goal to start the Leafs' scoring tonight!

A neck on the ice is pretty darn vulnerable and keep in mind that the circumference of the throat is bigger than the forearm so there is more surface area for a skate to come into contact with. As well, the carotid artery in the neck is the largest in the body and will bleed someone out way faster than anywhere else in the body. The upper arm is almost fully protected by the shoulder pad extension and the elbow pad.

Why is this even a discussion. Are you saying that neck shields is a bad idea? Ask Clint Malarchuk.

Agree about Nylander. He also made a great pass for the 4-4 point salvaging goal by Matthews.

It gets too hot. I've wore throat protectors before. Unless there is new technology now which there probably is.

Sheldon Keefe said Ilya Mikheyev and Kyle Dubas will fly back from New Jersey today. Dubas has remained with Mikheyev the whole time. Keefe said injured winger is doing as well as can be expected and is in good spirits.
