Ah yes, Perimeter Willie, who scores most of his goals from the slot, below the faceoff dots.
That's some floater, that Nylander fellow.

The Leafs get outhit on the stats sheet every game, sometimes 2:1. That kind of grind has got to get to you, especially the skill guys. It doesn’t matter that you know how to take a hit. After a while, it gets to you.
I don’t know,I’m just trying to analyze.

The Leafs have the highest cap hits for any four forwards on any team :

Matthews 15.88
Tavares 15.02
Marner. 14.87
Nylander. 9.50

That’s in excess of 54 millions for just 4 forwards. Do you really think they can keep all four moving forward and build a cup contender ? If one of these 4 has to be traded for help on defence, who would be the likely candidate?

They are consistently late to the puck. They are easily beaten on the forecheck.
You're not wrong on this. Too often they don't finish their checks, preferring just to attempt a stick check instead, and when they get beat most go for a long skate in a wide circle rather than stop and get back on the check. Hyman is about the only one with any consistent, intense tenacity on the forecheck and backcheck. The Leafs could use two more like him - what a difference that would make. The worst part is that they have some bodies who could absolutely do it just like Hyman, but refuse.

Ah yes, bullsitt, jeff oneil, when a Maple Leaf, exhibited zero evidence of leadership, grit, passion.
Now, beaks off about other players. Smooooth there, jeffy.

Not one of those 4 numbers is correct.

Cap hits (U.S. $$)
Matthews $11.634Mm
Tavares $11.00Mm
Marner $10.893Mm
Nylander $6.962Mm

Why show in U.S. $$ ?
Because all NHL contracts are negotiated (and paid) in U.S. funds.

Those aren't even accurate if in Canadian funds.

Can't always blame the players. Management has to share some or most of the blame.

In the 52 years since the Leafs last won the Cup, the Montreal Canadiens have won the Cup 10 times including the last time a Canadian based team won the Cup during Bettman's tenure.

Please remind us how long since Montreal won?

As you may not be aware, currencies do fluctuate so my figures in Canadian may be off by a few thousands. Anyway, that’s still 40 million US for 4 players.

Been almost 30 years now, off the top of my head.

And it's not like they have been close ever since.
When the Leafs were at the 30 year mark it was '97 and Leafs jokes and mocking were already commonplace. That's where Montreal is currently.

BTW, that last Mont cup was only because of possibly the greatest playoff performance ever by a goalie with an extremely mediocre team.

They were better than mediocre. They finished with 102 points that year. What helped them was that they had favourable playoff match ups and they won 8 overtime games.

In short they were a good team team but not great which rode a hot goalie and were unbelievably lucky. The stars just aligned at the right time.

Exactly the way I remember it.

So, tonight could be viewed as a very pivotal game....any predictions on outcome?

I think the Leafs come out hard, put up a better team effort than usual, but still come out on the bottom...maybe OT or shootout loss.

Many of the games went into overtime and they won almost all of them if I remember correctly. That year many of the top seeds were eliminated. When it got to the semi's all 4 teams were lower rung. And we all remember Fraser and Gretzky's high stick on Gilmour. Leafs beat Det in 7 games in round 1 and beat St Louis in 7 games in round 2 before losing to LA in 7 games.

I don't get it. Why is Malkin playing for the Pens? I thought the Leafs picked him up in a trade.
