The Best Film of 2019

It's all speculation, I thought Hoffa's remains would be found when they cleared away the wreckage of the World Trade Center.

I haven't seen The Irishman yet, Hoffa is a classic example of power corrupting absolutely. Sheeran could have done it but Hoffa made numerous enemies. Other suspects are Philadelphia mob boss Russel Bufelino (Pesci) or Genovese underboss and head of that family's NJ faction Anthony "The Pro" Provenzano.

Sebastian Maniscalco plays Crazy Joe Gallo, he also may have had a hand in the conspiracy. He started running heroin into NYC and got very rich, he also got loud and greedy starting a bloody turf war against "old school" mafiosi like Joe Profaci. Gallo was still alive when The French Connection got made, the Sicilian link was left out of the film. De Niro played mobster Jimmy Burke in Goodfellas, the name was changed to Conway.

If she had gotten a nomination for Fighting With My Family or Midsommar, I would say deserved, I haven't seen Little Women. The Academy always picks the safe choice, Alicia Vikander picked up an Oscar for That Danish Girl. I haven't seen it but I doubt it's better than Ex Machina.

Adam Sandler got snubbed for Best Actor for Uncut Gems, a disgrace but consistent. The Academy doesn't acclaim actors who rely on fart jokes in their past, which is why Jim Carrey has been snubbed in the past.

Unlike The Mighty Kristen Stewart, Florence Pugh is the real deal.

Sometimes the brain cannot overrule the heart.

Strictly on enjoyment the best film of 2019 is Fighting with my Family. I watched it for the third time recently, it holds up very well to repeat viewings. Not sure who made the call, director Stephen Merchant or executive producer The Rock? Going with talent over image paid off, it was probably The Rock, he used his personal wealth to get the film made. Florence Pugh wasn't exactly a replicant of Saraya (Paige) Bevis but she brought real soul to the part.

Having been out of touch with wrestling I didn't know who Paige was when I first watched the film. Watching her clips before the second viewing, Pugh nailed the role in spirit. Unfortunately Paige's story does not have a happy ending, she was forced to retire from wrestling due to a neck injury at the age of 25. She's currently taking acting lessons from Pugh, we'll see her again...why not learn from the best.

Merchant had a good year with FWMF and Jojo Rabbit.

It's bizarre, so much attention was given to Charlie's Angels crashing like a Lead Zeppelin, people forgot about Olivia Wilde's directorial debut: Booksmart.

No anti - male propaganda was used to promote Wilde's film - and the cast were downright charming.

Kaitlyn Dever's career has been on a roll since her first acting credit.

Apart from Booksmart, she has Justified, Detroit and Short Term 12 on her resume.

If not for Green Book's critical and box office success we wouldn't be getting a Sopranos prequel - even though some SJWs hated the film. The film is based on Tony Lip's memoirs, written as a screenplay by his son Nick Vallelonga.

Tony Lip played Carmine Lupertazzi in The Sopranos.
