All my life, I have avoided listening to Wagner, because of that, but lately I am putting my toe in the water.
One can argue, that it was not Wagner's fault that Hitler and the Nazis loved his music.
It's been a lifelong guilty pleasure of mine.
Wagner was an Anti-Semite, home wrecker and coward - and yet his music is like heroin.

Until I was a violinist in our High School orchestra and participated in a performance of the prelude to Act III of Lohengrin... which was an exhilarating experience from within the orchestra!
I have listened to a lot of his music since then. Very mixed feelings and emotions. Got "hooked" into the overture to Tannhauser... especially after a couple of tokes! :applause:
Whatever his politics and ethics, his music often overwhelms me. Must have been the same for his sponsors and patrons, many of whom were also Jewish! :ambivalence:

Wagner dabbled with revolutionary politics going so far as palling with anarchist Mikhail Bakunin. At the time he was still considered a failed composer. Instead of manning the barricades he buggered off to Venice. It was there that he started experimenting with musical drama.
Although the concept isn't entirely his, Mendelssohn (a Jewish composer but not practicing) dabbled with the idea but his life was cut short. A famous Wagner theme arose from this:

Jonas Kaufmann, whom I refer to as the Rocco Siffredi of opera, has a Christmas Special on TLN. He made his name as a Helgentenor before taking to Italian Opera.
