Do the Right Thing and Moonstruck Actor Danny Aiello Dies at 86
Danny Aiello was also known for movies including Hudson Hawk and Jacob's Ladder

Danny Aiello, the Oscar-nominated actor best known for movies including Do the Right Thing and Moonstruck, has died, PEOPLE confirms. He was 86.

“It is with profound sorrow to report that Danny Aiello, beloved husband, father, grandfather, actor and musician passed away last night after a brief illness,” his family said in a statement. “The family asks for privacy at this time. Service arrangements will be announced at a later date.”
Aiello died on Thursday night at a medical facility in New Jersey, TMZ reports. According to the outlet, he was in the facility being treated for a sudden illness and had suffered an infection related to his treatment.

The actor broke into Hollywood in 1973 with a role in the Robert De Niro-starring baseball film Bang the Drum Slowly. Shortly after, he played Tony Rosato in The Godfather: Part II, where he said the famous line, “Michael Corleone says hello!”

Aiello received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the classic 1989 Spike Lee film Do the Right Thing. In the movie, he played the character of Salvatore “Sal” Fragione, the owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn.
Though Aiello is best known for Do the Right Thing, he also starred in movies including Moonstruck, Hudson Hawk and Jacob’s Ladder.

Outside of Hollywood, Aiello was also a stage actor, performing in multiple Broadway plays including Gemini, The Floating Light Bulb and The House of Blue Leaves. He also acted in television shows including Lady Blue and The Last Don.
“You know, I’ve only been in this business 17 years,” Aiello told PEOPLE in 1990. “For actors, that’s no time at all. Everything is happening so damn fast. It’s like a beautiful dream that never seems to end.”

The actor is survived by his wife Sandy Cohen, whom he married in 1955, and three children. His son, Danny Aiello III, died of cancer in 2010.

Classic tough guy actor and supposedly one of the easiest to work with...according to Bruce Willis and Spike Lee, two prickly personalities.

When he was working on Fort Apache:The Bronx, Paul Newman wanted to do the fight scene themselves. So they worked it out, the night before the shooting Aiello told his wife what was involved. Mrs. Aiello was shocked and pleaded, "please don't hurt his eyes"!

I loved Danny Aiello. He was really good in a movie called Dinner Rush, a fun movie to watch. He was such a warm, likeable guy.

Very memorable actor. Very likeable. Always makes you think of an older gent from around the way that's tough but also fair and kind. RIP.

You wont find anyone who'll have anything negative to say about Dany Aiello. Madonna met him for the first time and, on a lark, asked him to make a video with her. He was already an established actor at the time, he didn't need to say yes.

She must be in mourning.

Aiello got two Oscar noms for DoThe Right Thing and Moonstruck. He should have gotten one for Ruby, hell he should have won, but Hollywood chickened out.

Danny played a thematically pivotal character in Do The Right Thing. Went against all of his personal values and beliefs to help Spike make his point about race relations. He was a true artist. RIP wonderful man xo

Danny Aiello went against his values in Fort Apache: The Bronx playing a dirty cop with a body count. It took balls on Paul Newman's part to ask Danny to do the fight scene themselves, Aiello was a younger, bigger man.
