Hate to burst your bubble but none of those countries at the top are socialist. Many of them are more capitalist oriented than Canada. Speaking of Canada look where we rank in economic quality. That's disgusting

Very few left wing people want communism. Democractic Socialism is the best model thus far. Every single one of those countries at the top is very left leaning. Look at Norway vs Alberta. Albertans are making about 30-40K less per year then they could. Canada is not at the top but the problem is we are a HUGE country, difficult seasonality, so non Urban Canadians are bascially FUCKED. Parts of the US suffer from this as well. I am sure if you measured the big cities we would be up there. Still overall Canada is not in a bad place.

Great, so then you'd support these types of policies for Canada, since they are capitalist and not socialist?

Capitalism.
It is argued that the profit incentive encourages firms to be more efficient, cut costs and innovate new products that people want. If firms fail to keep up, they will go out of business. But, this business failure allows resources to flow to new more efficient areas of the economy. Something known as ‘creative destruction’
Socialism.
It is argued that state ownership often leads to inefficiency because workers and managers lack any real incentive to cut costs. One joke under Soviet Communism was ‘They pretend to pay us. We pretend to work.’

There is a certain dynamism that is lost in state bureaus and enterprises. People within these organizations begin to believe in perverse, unproductive contortions of objectives. There are certainly politics in every organization, but in the government it can be the end-all.

That is the theory.

I had the experiences of working both for the Government in Denmark and in some of the premier American global companies (IBM). As a matter of fact, I moved to USA because I wanted to learn the most modern and effective management methods.

It was however my experience that the department of the Danish Government I worked in, was vastly more efficient than the big American companies.

People are only incentivised if they feel they have control over their success or failure. You can motivate people with fear of job loss for a short period of time...but if they have resonable prospects they will just leave.

Of course, Denmark is a very small country. I don't have any first hand experience, but I know people who lived there on ex-pat assignments who felt it was a difficult place to get things done.

Every democracy, including the US, is a blend of capitalism and socialism. The only difference is where on the spectrum they sit (and yes, the rankings show countries with more socialistic policies than the US are doing better).

The department of Government I worked in, would be a large company if private.

And I do not know what anecdotal evidence you have, but Denmark is always ranked among the first 5 or so for "ease of doing business"
