It is the school administration which let a student who failed
the swimming test to join a swimming trip that should be charged .

There is another case where the parents of a murdered student are suing the school/school board for not providing a "safe space" for their son who was murdered inside the school or on school grounds. Will post a link if I find one.

And the teachers are going to have another one day strike this week. The Ont. gov't is going to let this thing get out of hand. DoFo puts saving a few dollars ahead of our children's education the same way he is sacrificing our healthcare. Typical right wingers, "money uber alles", to paraphrase from about 80 years ago.

A bit unfair to blame the teacher. The parents need to share some of the blame. If my child could not swim, no way would I allow them to go on a school trip with a lake nearby.

Yes the parents let the kid go while knowing he couldn't swim and the kid decided to swim without a PFD. That doesn't lessen the responsibility of the teachers who knew the kid failed the swim test and then failed to supervise him.

Well, as usual, someone is lying.

"The school board has said repeatedly that every student who went on the camping trip was required to pass a swim test. Anderson, however, told CBC Toronto that he didn't know if Jeremiah had passed his test."

Yet, half the kids on the trip failed the test! The board is ducking for cover.

I hate these deranged trials and stupid charges they lay. It was a tragic accident things happen sometimes.

This type of stuff makes you not want to do anything or be around anyone. Something happens you're responsible. Especially if you're a guy.

Holy shit. This makes one think twice before helping a little old lady cross the street. What happens if she slips and falls on our ice and snow covered streets and breaks her hip?

As I mentioned, this will be an interesting case.
Question: Didn't 14 of the 15 "non-swimmers" make it back healthy and alive?

Overnight field trips like this one are slowly being phased out due to liability/lawsuits/insurance etc. It is too bad for the kids.

No, it doesn't, but there are 5 parties to blame here, the student, the parents, the teacher, the principal and the school board. The student was a child and is deceased. The only one on trial and taking all the blame, now, is the teacher.

You get thrown under bus they always need a fall guy.

I remember I use to spend time with my friends daughter. She's a great kid who's dad isn't around and wants nothing to do with her.

Her mom works a lot trying to keep up with the bills so the poor kids at home all the time by herself.

I'd take her swimming, hiking, icecream ect whenever I had free time.

I stopped doing that heaven forbid something where to happen to her under my supervision I'd be fucked. I always kept a good eye on her but you never know.

It's pretty sad but not many people want the liability.

It's not a lie. The rules said they were required to. The teachers chose to ignore it.

The board will be sued (if they haven't already settled). The parents reasonably assumed that the kids would be supervised and made to wear a PFD. The kid was simply a kid; there's a reason why the law treats youth differently from adults. The teacher(s) are the ones with criminal liability here because they intentionally chose to ignore the swim requirement and then left the kid unsupervised.
