Trump Declines to Take Part in "Baseless" House Impeachment Inquiry

December 6, 20195:18 PM ET

AYESHA RASCO

The White House called the House impeachment process "completely baseless" and ruled out participation in next week's hearing.

President Trump has decided to stay out of the impeachment inquiry being conducted by the House of Representatives.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone rejected an offer from House Democrats that would have allowed the president to send counsel to represent him at future impeachment hearings.

In a short two-paragraph letter to Democrats, Cipollone said the impeachment inquiry is "completely baseless and has violated basic principles of due process and fundamental fairness."

"House Democrats have wasted enough of America's time with this charade," Cipollone said. "You should end this inquiry now and not waste even more time with additional hearings."

The decision is in line with the White House's general approach toward the House probe. Trump and his supporters have repeatedly called the investigation a "sham" and argued it was unfair to the president.

At the same time, the White House has ordered current and former officials to not testify and refused to turn over documents.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that the House Democrats were moving ahead with drafting articles of impeachment.

Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee released a 300-page reportthis week outlining evidence that they say shows that Trump abused his office and pressured Ukraine to open investigations that would boost him politically.

LOL!!!!! Pelosi already directed the House to write the articles of impeachment. What is there to debate? On to the Senate. Schiff, Hunter, Biden Sr., the whistleblower will all get subpoenas.

Trump whined that the process was unfair and that he didn't get to take part.
The dems offered him a chance.
He turned it down.

Now he's just obstructing justice and claiming he has divine right to to whatever he wants.
Trump wants to be king or dictator.

If Trump isn't impeached, no POTUS will ever be again.

What chance was that? Like the 3 against 1 constitutional "experts"? Or witnesses that witnessed nothing? No, sweetie, the whole process has been a partisan clusterfuck from beginning to the end. It is only fair that the process will be reversed in the Senate. And you will be just as unhappy about it.

If Trump isn't impeached this will be used as the excuse for any other impeachments.
They'll say its partisan, ignore requests for docs and claim to be above the law.

You want Warren to be able to do that?

Good for him. He is exercising his right.
And quite the opposite...if he is impeached this just give Democrats the excuse to impeach people who beat them in the election.
Useless witch hunt.

He doesn't have a right to be above the law and act like a king.
You should support democracy, not rule by despots.

Haha democracy? Says the guy who believes everyone should be forced to pay for everyone else's lifestyle.
Guess what? That's Communism. And if you haven't noticed, that's far from democracy.
Just ask the folks in Hong Kong.

Above the law?! How stupid is Pelosi to even make that claim after Schiff made a "request"? If the Democrats were serious about seeing those documents, they would've subpoena them and argued the Executive's rejection in a proper setting. The House is not above the law nor it is above the Executive Branch and neither is ignoring a "request" an obstruction of any kind as it carries no weight. A subpoena does, but since it wasn't issued, what the hell are you blabbing about?

O

OnTheWayOut

Trump is focused on keeping America on course and keeping his promises. Democrats are intent on dragging the US into chaos and ignoring what's best for the country. All because they lost an election due to their corruption and insolence. They learned nothing and still try to strong arm their way to achieve their goals. Problem is their arms are not strong and their minds are feeble. #Trump2020

That's how democracy works.
The majority votes that they want universal health care and then everybody has to pay for it.
I suggest you move to a country where you can have total freedom.
Try Iraq, there is basically no government to make you pay for anything.
Or Somalia.

That's what you want, isn't it?

They have subpoenaed Trump repeatedly. Trump responds by trying to stall and run out the clock by challenging everything and now taking it to the SC.
Trump refused to honour any requests for documents or honour any subpoenas, going so far as demanding his staff to not testify.

He is acting above the law and you back it.
You want a king, not a democratically elected leader who has to obey the law and rules.

You should organize your thoughts before posting. The Executive Branch doesn't need to do anything if it deems the "requests" as overreach. Perfectly legal and within the established norms and precedents. The Congress can challenge it, if they want to. Sometimes they get it and sometimes they do not. That's how the Republic was designed to function, so one branch does not become dominant. That is why, also, there's an electoral college and the equal division of the Senate.

You mean like electing a President but not accepting him as the leader of the country and then burning cars in protest and spending every waking moment conducting witch hunts to get him out of office?
That kind of democracy?

It’s a farce. The House has been amateur hour, the Senate is when the A team takes the field and that won’t be as one sided.

Could it have anything to do with that the House is Democratic and the Senate is Republican?

It’s more the quality of the representatives and maturity of leadership. They play the long game, the house is designed to be a majority bully.
