The appointment of Canada’s hawkish foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, to the post of deputy prime minister is another significant indication of Trudeau’s plan for the coming years.

Freeland has played a significant and direct role in pushing a more aggressive foreign agenda, particularly in Latin America where she figured prominently in efforts to bring down Venezuela’s government through the Organization of American States as well as the now lame-duck Lima Group.

Before leaving for her new post, Freeland’s Global Affairs ministry was among the first to give its blessing to the coup against Bolivian President Evo Morales, in favor of right-wing Christian extremist Jeanine Anez whose Democrat Social Movement garnered four percent of the vote in the country’s last election.

Of course, not even a hint of irony that while continuing to pay lip service to indigenous people and human rights, Trudeau and Freeland condoned the bloody overthrow of the region’s only indigenous president.

In a departure from Liberal tradition, Freeland has also embraced far-right leaders from Brazil to Ukraine in her foreign policy aims.

The dude changed the Bolivian Constitution so he could keep running.

The liberal party has lost my support by supporting fascist coups and regime changes in South America.

To imagine that the party of Lester Pearson would engage in this way! Shameful

Chrystia Freeland is just another example of the Peter Principle.

Supporting anti-democratic socialist regimes does not put your political thought processes in good light.

1. Morales was not anti-democratic, on the contrary. He got 46% of votes in last election.

2. You are supporting an unelected person who declared herself president.

Why do you think most democratic countries, if not all, have term limits?

We want ideas and values to be more important than charismatic leaders. We want ideas and values that can rise above and survive beyond personality.

It was a coup d'etat. End of story. Now the people are being rounded up by secret police for protesting. Freeland and her ilk are Fascists. So was her granfather and in this case the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Did anybody notice the new Bolivian Government has now recognized Israel while Morales denounced them ? And who put Trudeau in power ? The Bronfmans and George Soros. Nobody as stupid as Trudeau could ever have risen to the role of Prime Minister without their help.

The supreme court of Bolivia sided with Morales that he could run for a 4th term. It was a military coup, only the intervention of Mexico avoided Morales' assassination.

You want fascist regimes in South America. Sadly, the Canadian Government agrees with you.

For the first time since I became a Canadian citizen am I ashamed of being a Canadian.

The Bolivian court did this, and while it is not ideal, the fact is, he still won the election apparently 100% legit and a slightly dirty but effective leader is much better then a military coup.

Yes, the Bolivian Supreme Court decided to eliminate term limits on their own volition. There are some things that I don't get too excited about and this is one of them. Perhaps neither side in this Bolivian fight is worthy of our support.

danmand is on record supporting the Maduro regime in Venezuela. When regimes fall and economies wobble in South America, it's always the U.S. and their Western allies' fault. Since the Soviet Union fell, the U.S. has long lost interest in Latin American socialist movements

You are willfully blind and deaf, if you say that USA has no interest in South America. That has to be your most incredulous post so far. Give your head a shake.

For the record, I am against USA and Canada interfering in the affairs of other countries, in South America and anywhere else.

I live an area with many Venezuela émigrés. Yes, Venezuela might be better off if they stayed in their home country. In your fantasy world if you coerce talented people to work for the government, it would make it better for everyone. That's not how the real world works. Socialism doesn't work. It won't even work if you could destroy the free market principles of the United States. Another one would pop up somewhere else to take advantage of the talent of industrious people.

I am so saddened that someone could come on to this board and preach for the Maduro regime. Now you claim the Bolivian leader has been deposed in a coup that the United States helped orchestrate. Perhaps you are living in the 1970s. Bolivia is not a strategic interest of the United States. The U.S. is not really concerned about Cuba except for the fact we have Cuban-Americans who are pissed off by the fucked up mess that the Castro brothers made of their country.

The US isn't interested in the movement, they are interested in the huge lithium deposits and very uneasy that Morales was striking deals with the Chinese to extract them vs the usual US companies. The court struck down the term limits because they violated the human rights of Morales which is not entirely unreasonable. We have no term limits in Canada and neither do many highly respected democracies. If he did do this and the people STILL voted for him, then ultimately the people have chosen and isn't primacy of the people the most important principal in democracy? We have a not withstanding clause that does pretty much the same thing.

Even if Morales abused the constitution, which he did not, why the fuck does that give USA and Canada any right to interfere in the affairs of Bolivia?

They are not. Right or wrong, the coup was homegrown.

I have heard the mineral deposits theory to support many a U.S. or Western conspiracy. The fact is there is overabundance of Lithium on world markets just like almost every commodity. It makes for a good conspiracy, but does not hold up under closer examination.

If under your theory, Morales was willing to sell mineral extraction rights to the Chinese at a less than competitive price as opposed to Western interests that could put him at odds with domestic interests. I assure just like anywhere in the world they want to maximize their dollars.
