Breaking news...

An organization known as OSSTF is holding Ontario high school students hostage. The ransom is an additional $750 million (on top of the $750 million already offered).

In order to pay the ransom, citizens will either need to donate to a hostage fund called "Provincial Taxes" or accept cuts to existing services to offset having to donate to the ransom fund.

Stay tuned as this story develops...

A good reason why parents should pay for all or some of their kids education. It's too easy to demand more more more when you think its "free".

Here
There's no ransom here the osstf is using its constitutional right to protest to what it thinks are unfair cuts to our educational system. Every time the government needs to tighten their belts they go after education. These young people are our future and education should be a priority not a way for dofo to balance his books.

Ford and Lecce are incompetent and have no idea on how the bargaining process works. Lying to the media doesn't cut it, since only right wingers will believe you.

OSSTF leadership sat at an empty bargaining table for 2 days while they waited for Wonder Boy Lecce and his gang to show up, they never did. They were glad to let things get this bad so they can run to the public and go see see those greedy teachers are just in it for the money!!! Luckily as previously mentioned outside of Ford Nation no one is buying their lies, did you see Lecce yesterday at the press conference? all flustered, looking completely unqualified and out of his element as he is, so glad the media jumped on him to expose these government further.

It’s all about the kids? You mean the kids sitting at home today when they should be in school?

Let’s be real here...it’s about the money. It has always been about the money for these greedy teachers and their money-hungry union.
Problem for them right now is they don’t have the Liberals pandering to them and just giving them what they want...and paying for their pizza lunches too.

Time to make education an essential service if you believe it’s important and scrap these money-sucking union hacks for good.
There’s a new sheriff in town...get used to it.

The problem with "free" public education is that parents have no skin in the game. They think that free education is actually free. Sure, kids are our future and they will be the ones paying off the debt incurred to fund teacher salaries and pensions.

The teachers need to wave only one placard and that is:

"More money, more money, more money" and cut the bullshit that they really care about the lids.

Yes, the kids who will be in larger and larger classes and be forced to take online courses simply to save money. I would be willing to bet my non-union job that if the government reversed their cuts and offered their legislated 1%, the unions would jump at it. That's what happened with the cupe people.

At least the government's BS plays well with people like darts.

You obviously have no children if you think parents have "no skin" in their children's education (no matter where they learn).

Class size propaganda is a myth created by the union. Not all class sizes would increase and some by 1 or 2 students.
The union wants smaller class sizes not because they actually believe it would make the quality of education better, but to enable them to hire more teachers. More teachers means more money for the unions.
Online education is pretty much standard in the business world these days. It also is used in telemedicine and education foe remote students. The benefit is that you can have 1 teacher serving many more students than just the amount that fit in a classroom.
Of course the union would make online education sound bad...it means less teachers.

If the government said to the union they would give them a 5% raise...they wouldn't give a crap about class sizes. Everyone knows that is true.
It's about the money.
The province is broke and every penny they want would be paid from debt, putting the province further into debt.
How do you think we got into this mess over the last 15 years? The Liberals just gave the unions what they wanted and paid for it with borrowed money.

You obviously don't understand what "skin" means in my post. It means money (origin is back in the old days when people traded animal skin for goods).
"What Is a Buck?

Buck is an informal reference to $1 that may trace its origins to the American colonial period when deer skins (buckskins) were commonly traded for goods. The buck also refers to the U.S. dollar as a currency that can be used both domestically and internationally." (In Canada we used beaver pelts.)

In 2019 parents think that education is "free" so they think they don't have any skin in paying for more teachers and their handsome salary, benefits and pensions, smaller classes, air conditioned schools, etc.

(I had a tutor in my final year in high school, so yes my parents had "skin" in my education. Same with any parents who paid for their kids' piano lessons, dance classes, judo school, etc.)

Ford raised the deficit by lowering the corporate tax and is now trying to get that money back through services people actually use, like schools, health care and transit.
You are totally off base.

You are right Ford Nation supporter, class size is a myth in fact it is a lie that is pushed by this government. That number of 25 to 1 in high school classes ratio of students to teachers includes administration, principals, vice principals and special education workers. Now I am sure at some point in your life you were a student, when did you ever see a principal or vp inside a classroom unless it was an emergency situation? so that 25 to 1 is actually vastly higher. As for the online learning, it is an awesome idea if you are an upper or middle class kid whose parents can afford to get them a computer and good internet service, otherwise well too Ford Nation doesnt care about you. Do you know who Wonder Boy Lecce uses an example to push online learning? the state of Alabama, that ranks 49th out of 50 in education in the US, yes awesome example to follow.

Ford Nation needs to get it through their heads, you cant hack and slack education without severe consequences to society, yes you will save a few nickels and dimes to buy your buck a beer, but the social and financial costs down the road will be astronomical.

I think you need to get your facts straight. Administration workers are not included in the student:teacher ratio. Who is are FTTE's (full time teaching equivalents). That would include librarians, guidance counselors, principals and vice principals. Right now in Ontario average student:teacher ratio is approximately 22.5 to 1. The Ford administration seeks to increase that to 25 to 1. Is a 10% increase really that much of an issue that teachers need to strike or work to rule?
When I went to high school we had class sizes up to 35. I'd say the average was about 28-30.

Administration is principals and vice principals when those numbers are factored in that number sky rockets, why is the government lying to the people of Ontario? Principals, vice principals, librarians and guidance counsellors are not in a classroom ever, so who needs to get their facts straight, the Ford government needs to actually start negotiating, Wonder Boy Lecce and the farmer that preceded him (both completely unqualified and out of their depth as education ministers) want to turn the public against teachers, well it isnt working except for the hardcore Ford Nation types.

It has more to do with being a rich kid with a silver spoon stuck in your ass.

Ontario teachers receive the best pay in the world for doing what they do. But they always want more because they are used to getting what they demand. They use the "quality of education" as a screen for just wanting more money. And people like you totally fall for that propaganda. So I guess their usual tactics are working which is why they keep using those tactics every time they are up for a contract renewal.

You think all teachers should make what an government minister makes? MPP's pensions (as well as most other people) come no where near what teachers get. Teachers can retire and get about 90% of their salary. Pretty good deal that we all pay for don't you think?

btw Trudeau fits your description of a rich kid with a silver spoon stuck in his ass if that's what you mean?
