London Bridge: Man shot by police after stabbing

    incident
A number of people have been stabbed and a man has been shot dead by police in an incident at London Bridge.

The Met Police said it was treating the stabbing attack as "terror related".

Earlier, the force said it had detained a man. London Ambulance Service has declared a "major incident".

BBC reporter John McManus said he saw a fight on the bridge, with several men attacking one man. Police then arrived quickly and a number of shots were fired at the man, he said.

The Met said police were called to reports of a stabbing just before 14:00.

It said the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear but it was treating it as terror-related as a "precaution".

Footage has emerged on social media showing the apparent suspect appearing to be shot as he lay on the ground.

Another man in a suit and jacket could be seen running from him, having apparently retrieved a large knife.

Another video shows police officers aiming guns at a white lorry that jack-knifed across London Bridge.

British Transport Police said London Bridge station was currently closed and no trains would be stopping there.

Police have advised people near the scene to follow directions from officers on the ground.

The prime minister tweeted he was being updated on the incident and wanted to thank police and all emergency services for their response.

He is returning to Downing Street from his constituency.

Home Secretary Priti Patel also tweeted that she was "very concerned" about the incident.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted that the reports from London Bridge were "shocking" and his thoughts were with those who were caught up in the incident.

McManus told the BBC News channel: "Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge.

"There appeared to be a fight going on on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man.

"Police then quickly arrived, including armed police, and then a number of shots were fired at this man."

Witnesses have spoken to the BBC about what they saw.

Amanda Hunter, who was on a bus on London Bridge at the time, said: "All of a sudden [it] stopped and there was some commotion and I looked out the window and I just saw these three police officers going over to a man…

"It seemed like there was something in his hand, I'm not 100% sure. But then one of the police officers shot him."

Noa Bodner, who is stuck in a restaurant on London Bridge, told BBC News channel: "There was a rush of people coming in and everybody basically dived under the tables.

"We were told to keep away from the windows, people that came from the outside were saying that shots were fired."

She said the manager ran to lock the doors and staff told people to move away from the front of the restaurant.

She said the mood was "calm", "some people seem a bit distressed, but they're being looked after by friends or staff".

There were apparently reports that the man who was shot by the police was wearing an explosive device...but now it turns out the device was a hoax?

Given the m.o. and the location of the incident its highly likely that this is a radical Islamist incident. Apparently a bystander crossed the street from the other side of the bridge through traffic, tackled the perpetrator and disarmed him before police arrived.

I shine and rise at the same time.

A guy who was with us at Fishmongers Hall took a 5’ narwhale tusk from the wall and went out to confront the attacker. You can see him standing over the man (with what looks like a white pole) in the video. We were trying to help victims inside but that man’s a hero #LondonBridge

He was pursued by a narwhal-tusked armed vigilante before being shot by police.

Isn't there a better word in the English language to describe someone stopping murders in progress than vigilante?

Bystanders in London Bridge Attack Used Narwhal Tusk and Fire Extinguisher to Stop Attacker

By Jennifer Doherty On 11/30/19 at 4:07 PM EST
A day after the London Bridge terrorist attack that killed two people and injured three more, media reports have emerged about the men who subdued the attacker to end the tragedy and, in one case, offer hope for redemption.

The rampage began just before 2 p.m. Friday at a conference on prisoner rehabilitation hosted by Learning Together, a prison education program. The alleged assailant, Usman Khan, was an attendee at the event, which was being held in Fishmongers' Hall, next to London Bridge on the north bank of the River Thames. Khan served six years in British prison on terrorism charges before his conditional release last year.

At the conference, Khan allegedly produced a bladed weapon and revealed himself to be wearing a fake suicide vest. After attacking several conference attendees, Khan exited Fishmongers' Hall, where he was chased by civilians and police officers.

Video from the bridge showed three men surrounding the suspect. One blasted a fire extinguisher at the knife-wielding terrorist while another swung at him with a 5-foot white pole, later identified as a narwhal tusk.

The spear-like tusk was mounted on a wall in the Fishmongers' Hall, according to reports, and was pulled for use as a weapon by a man reportedly identified in media outlets as a Polish chef named Lukasz.

British newspaper The Guardian identified one of the other men in the video as convicted murderer James Ford, who pleaded guilty in the 2004 death of an intellectually disabled woman. Ford was out on day release and was also attending the Learning Together conference.

Khan was shot and killed by officers after being subdued by the men in the video.

"I express my enduring thanks to the police and emergency services, as well as the brave individuals who put their own lives at risk to selflessly help and protect others," Queen Elizabeth said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace Saturday.

Media outlets have hailed the men as heroes following the attack, though the family of Ford's victim has told the press the title does not apply to him. "I don't care what he's done today, he's a murderer," Angela Cox, the victim's aunt told The Independent.

Also on Saturday, the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Khan had acted as one of their fighters in an announcement on its Amaq news agency.

ISIS provided no evidence to support the claim, and London's Metropolitan Police suggested Khan likely acted alone. "At this time, we have found no evidence to suggest anybody else was involved in this attack. However, we are still making extensive enquiries to ensure there were no other people involved. Our investigative priority at this time is to ensure that there is no related outstanding threat to the public," Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

One of the victims killed in the attack was Jack Merritt, a course coordinator at Learning Together. The identity of the other murder victim, a woman, has not been released.

So...one of the guys who subdued the terrorist is a convicted murderer who was out on parole attending this same Learning Together prisoner education conference. I guess if you pick a fight with a bunch of ex-cons you will probably get your ass kicked.

Didn't they all admire Hitler? The nazis had a Muslim battalion.

London Bridge stabber belonged to jihadist group that admired Hitler

The knife-wielding terrorist who was subdued by civilians, then shot dead by police on London Bridge on Friday was a paroled bomb plotter who once hoped to start a jihadist training camp in Kashmir — and whose fellow Islamists admired Hitler and downplayed the Holocaust.
At the time of Friday’s attack, Pakistan native Usman Khan, 28, had been free a year after serving just half of a 16-year sentence for plotting with eight others in 2010 to bomb such London landmarks as the stock exchange, American embassy, and Westminster Abbey.

He was still wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet when he went berserk with two long knives after speaking about his own “rehabilitation” during a Cambridge University-sponsored criminal justice conference in London, killing two and injuring three.
Back in 2010, he and his fellow, al-Quaeda-inspired jihadists fundraised and recruited for a terror camp Khan, at 19 the youngest in the group, hoped to build on his family’s land in Kashmir, CNN reported.
The camp would be disguised as a legitimate Muslim school, but its graduates would return to the UK as highly-trained terrorists who would commit deadly attacks, according to court proceedings cited by The Guardian.

Investigators bugged the extremist group, and heard members talking favorably about Hitler, who they called an ally of Islam because he understood “the Jews were dangerous,” the Guardian reported.
Group members also claimed that fewer than 100,000 Jews died in the Holocaust.
The group plotted to set off a pipe bomb in the London Stock Exchange, and were also targeting the US embassy and the home of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, then London’s mayor.

Though he killed 2 people, this does not sound like a very well thought out terror attack. The guy went off at a conference where he was speaking about how he has been rehabilitated? WTF?

He sounds more like that crazy lady who flipped out in the Canadian Tire in Etobicoke, no? I believe ISIS is now claiming responsibility for this attack but the cops believe this was a lone-wolf attack?

Looks like a lone wolf attack, but its hard to tell for sure, the investigation will tell. I doubt it was Isis. Maybe his nazi friends convinced him to do it. I think the Canadian tire woman was probably a schizophrenic I wonder what happened with that. This guy was more sophisticated if you read the stories of his first arrest...

ISIS encourages all of their followers to engage in Jihad. And of course they take the written word of Mohamed as stated in the Koran literally.

Mohamed the warlords teachings are pretty brutal. People who follow these ideologies are mentally unbalanced by nature.

I'm not a fan of Islam that's for sure. But as an agnostic I'm not a fan of most of what any religion has to offer.
