. He seems like a good team mate.
Depends on what your idea of a good team mate is. He got into a fight in spring training last year because of the young guys wasn't hustling down line during some kind drill. Maybe bunting or something....

One could call that leadership I guess?

One game where he pitched well and was giving an interview after, he got the Gatorade shower and threw a hissy fit about it.

Closers are notoriously neurotic, it goes with the pressure. Vladi heard about it in the clubhouse but nothing came of it.

Neurotic or not, that kind of behavior can lead to tension between players so it's still begs the question if he's a "good team mate".

And he won't even break camp with the team.
He won't break camp with the Jays, not because he isn't ready but because it makes financial sense to delay his entry into the league so the club has him under control for a longer period of time. If he is mentally and physically ready for the bigs, as a fan, that is where I would like to see him.

Actually, he is NOT physically ready......to pitch a full season. His innings have been limited since being drafted and will continue to be so. He will be up this year but I think that 2021 will be his 1st full season. I'm guessing that he'll make about 15 starts this year in the majors.

They should sign Puig to a 1 year deal, nobody really wants him. I know he's a head case but would be an upgrade in the outfield.

not disagreeing with your assessment, but I saw him starting the year from the bullpen and then progressing to the rotation. If (when) called up mid-season I would expect it to be as a starter.

What a great talent all fucked up by his head.

But the reality is that it is easier to "fix" talent than to unfuck a head!

Not Blue Jays related, but I headed down a baseball rabbit hole earlier today and found this:

Nolan Ryan pitching line from June 14, 1974
Innings 13
Hits 8
Runs 3 (3 Earned)
BB 10
K 19
P 235

Ryan got a No Decision

But he gave up 8 hits and 10 walks. That's a WHIP of 1.38. Not so great.

The 8 hits over 13 innings is excellent. The 10 walks is not, but if a pitcher of his quality is able to pitch himself out of it every time then it doesnt matter how many he walks.

Thats why many baseball stats = lies, damned lies and statistics

I hope you know that I was just joking. Those numbers are amazing in that they are ones we will never see again unless it is game 7 of a WS. Nowadays if a guy pitches 7 seven innings he is a stud and the 235 pitches is jaw dropping. Because of the size of contracts clubs are not just protective but over protective of their arms. Another way that huge contracts have a negative impact on the fan experience.

Stunning and it never messed his arm up but he was juiced so it does not count

Way back a pitcher almost always pitched the entire game even if he was getting hammered

Nolan Ryan was juiced?
Source, please?

Nolan Ryan did not pitch a complete game that night.
(Yes, I know you wrote most games).

It is believed he was on something that is why he lasted so long and continued to pitch at a high level when most pitchers retire

Way back at the turn of century they seldom used relievers

Concerning the Jays relievers are the last part of a rebuild because they are so erratic. Great one year then tank so you throw the dice and sign a bunch of them hoping one comes up with a great year out of nowhere

From what I've read it was fairly common for players to do amphetamines in the sixties and seventies.

But I'm not sure how performance enhancing they would be to a baseball player. Although Adderall is banned by MLB because it actually helps some focus better. My guess is that you would to suffer ADHD for it to be of benefit. A friend of mine took it for a baseball game he was playing in a few years ago ( a national level slow pitch game) and he said it just screwed him right up.

Steroids were not prevalent in baseball in the 70's. They were still old school and believed that added muscle would slow you down. Little did they know. The first guy I remember who obviously trained was Brian downing if I recall
