Ontario PCs To Spend $778 Million To Reverse Their Own Cuts

Premier Doug Ford’s government is spending more money this year than its April budget accounted for.

By Emma Paling

TORONTO — The Ontario government is spending at least $778 million this year on programs it originally cut in its 2019 budget.

Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government said it would spend $163.8 billion this year in its fall economic statement introduced by Finance Minister Rod Phillips at Queen’s Park Wednesday.

That’s up $400 million from the $163.4 billion the government said it would spend in its April budget. Some of this spending was covered by an already-accounted for contingency fund, according to the economic statement, which is why $1.3 billion in new spending is less than the increase in the “total expense.”

These are the reinstated expenses that the PCs had previously said they’d eliminate:

$41 million for public health units,
$26 million for land ambulance operations,
$122 million for municipalities to use for child care,
$310 million to fund the Transition Child Benefit and for people on social assistance now that some of the PCs’ changes to Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program have been abandoned,
$279 million for the Ontario Autism Program

Ontario’s deficit is now expected to be $9 billion this year, down from the $10.3-billion figure in the April budget.

Phillips said the statement showed his government’s “balanced and prudent approach to governing,” as he introduced the corresponding bill in the legislature.

“Our government under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford unveiled a bold new vision for our province — and the people of Ontario bought in,” he said.

“We promised to build a future with them where they not only worked to make ends meet, but where their government helped enable a better quality of life, and a higher standard of living, for all its citizens.”

Ford’s government has reversed course on a laundry list of controversial decisions after its first year in office was marked by constant protests.

The premier acknowledged Monday that his government is trying to hit a different note.

“You’ve known me for years, I’ve never changed,” Ford said to a reporter in Etobicoke, Ont. “I think we’ve toned it down at Queen’s Park.”

I think they've done a fine job so far. And adjusting things as they go is the right approach. And still reduced the deficit.

Backtracking on just about everything they've done and stood for does not a fine job make.

Capitulation does not equal adjusting things.

And they grew the deficit not reduced it.

BTW, weren't you in support of all the initial cuts before the capitulation and backtracking?

So they cut...you get upset.
They don't cut...you get upset.
They adjust cuts...you get upset.

Is there anything they can do that won't get you upset?

It's not a matter of being wrong or right...it's a matter of attempting to reduce debt while still providing funding for various services.

It's a balance that this government is obviously working on. Kudos to them for working on it and making adjustments where necessary.

Do you agree?

They have ballooned the deficit and debt.

1) Yes, really.

2) Not.
Like I said...cut and you get upset, don't cut and you get upset.

Let's be honest, if you don't like them you will find something to be upset about so why bother trying to make clever comments when it's really not about the budget at all?

There's a reason why Ontario is the most indebted non-sovereign entity in the world...and this is not the result of Ford being in office for a year. That world record was set long before he got into office.
Let that sink in for a moment.

And lest we forget where that monstrous debt came from:

When Dalton McGuinty first became Ontario premier in 2003, the province’s debt stood at $138.8 billion. The current debt load of $311.7 billion represents a 124 per cent increase. Inflation has softened this somewhat ($1 in 2003 is worth about $1.30 now), but Ontario has easily just undergone the most aggressive and prolonged period of debt accumulation in its history.

So 15 years of reckless spending vs 1 year of trying to manage that debt...yeah that's a fair comparison.

Doug Ford doubled the deficit in his first year of office even while cutting services.
Stop backing him for doing exactly the opposite of what he said he'd do.

What non beer related things have they actually accomplished?
Reduced Toronto city council and scrapped the cap & trade cash grab bs as well as several other Liberal bs schemes like the "Fair Hydro Plan".
I could go on and on but why don't you do your own research...I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

Isn't it enough that he eradicated the provincial Liberals? Remember that party that used to be here?
That's a major accomplishment unto itself!

Let's cut away the hyperbole, Ontario is nowhere the financial mess that Illinois and Michigan are in. Nor does Ontario have the glaring inequality of those two States.

Premiere Ford has to tread carefully when making spending cuts, he can't be seen to be favoring the entitled. In the UK, Gordon Brown and David Cameron presided over the biggest tax shift in UK history - look where it got them! Cameron's was particularly damaging, he brought in wholesale service cuts just when Britain needed them the least. Scottish Independence leader Nicola Sturgeon has already issued the warning that there will be another independence referendum should Britain leave the EU. Cameron recently attacked Boris Johnson in the press, seriously, he should shut his arrogant damn yap!
