Conservatives across Canada are undermining public education in favour of private, for-profit education

Right-wing governments across the country are waging war on public education.

Kian Malekanian

The release of Alberta’s budget this week was marked by a slew of cuts, funding freezes and austerity measures. Less discussed was the UCP’s changes to education funding. It appears Kenney has joined his counterparts in their quest to defund public education.

The Alberta United Conservatives’ inaugural budget opted to freeze education funding at current levels. This means, in real terms, funding will decrease as inflation rises over time. Put more simply, Kenney is ushering in cuts to education through a secret back door. At the same time, the budget increases funding to private education alternatives, allocating a total of $400 million their way.

Conservatives undermining public education is not isolated to Alberta. Conservative governments in Saskatchewan and Manitobahave likewise underfunded public education. Unlike Kenney, they have not entirely frozen funding increases but have instead increased funding short of what is required to match inflation.

Ontario Premier, Doug Ford’s assault on public education has been perhaps the most notable. Ford has sought to slash education funding by increasing class sizes, firing teachers and canceling support programs. According to the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario, more than 10,000 teachers are slated to lose their jobs under Ford’s watch. His cuts have been met with fierce opposition, instigating province-wide walkouts, large-scale protests and threats of strikes.

Private, for-profit educators have stepped into fill the cracks created by Ford. Pricey private schools like Blyth Academy are even using Ford’s cuts to market their services to disgruntled parents.

During the 2019 federal election campaign, the Conservatives under Scheer’s leadership had a similar agenda in their policy prescriptions. Their proposal to give $4000 to families who sent their kids to private schools was met with heavy criticism. Ultimately the blowback forced Scheer to renege on this promise.

Across the board, Conservatives have been working to weaken public education. These moves have been to the detriment of average Canadian families and to the benefit of for-profit private institutions. Once again, Conservative declamations that they stand ‘for the people’ are contradicted by their own actions.

What about the special needs kids, like you?
Misleading article...Ford hasn’t fired teachers. Enrolment is down so why hire more teachers? Reductions are mainly through attrition. The ads you hear about “firing 10000 teachers” is a lie. These positions don’t exist today and we’re for the future.
The province basically followed the recommendations the Liberals ignored when they were in power in the province.
Why keep hiring teachers if there are less students?
Read more than headlines.

Wrong again, fake news.
Teachers have been let go for this year.
Schools have had big cuts.
Nope.
Surplus teachers yes.
Through attrition and not replaced yes.

Conservatives gave the board $1.6 billion so that full time teachers would not be let go.

So you are wrong.

If you believe you are correct, prove it.

We've been through this.
Ford mandated smaller class sizes and cut budgets.
School boards reacted by cutting teachers.
Parents freaked, Ford went into hiding then announced his $1.6 billion.
But contracts were already out and it was too late.
Ford went back into hiding.

Now he's out again and announcing he won't make class sizes as big as he said he would, since he's now less popular than Wynne and with twice the deficit.

People are losing confidence in the public education system. They've been voting with their feet and wallets for private education in increasing numbers over the last 4 decades. Rather than address their concerns (sliding academic standards, increasing focus on social issues in the classroom), public educators continue to press for more of what people are refusing to accept. No surprise that we will eventually reach a tipping point where government will be forced to grant head count funding to private school boards. If people who believe in the efficiency of public education want it to continue, they should be forcing school boards to address the concerns of parents who are opting out.

Public education is becoming unaffordable. As the middle class shrinks and those of us fortunate enough to still be considered middle class, wages have not gone up at all. This means there is less and less money for things like education and health care. The only section of the middle class that has seen appreciable wage increases and job security is the government class. Education workers, healthcare professionals, first responders, all of which have never seen a decrease in pay. EVER!!!!!!!!!

Are people on here aware of what a teacher gets as pension today? I am. Now they will tell you its because there pension fund is well managed and it is, mostly because of how large it is. However they never tell you how its funded, cause thats where you and I come in. Its taxpayer funded not teacher funded. My wife currently works n the healthcare world, for a regional public health unit. When she retires at age 62 after more than 30 years in management her pension will be just short of 7000 dollars a month.

Where else does a middle class worker get pension like this. NOWHERE. We won't go in to the abuse of benefits that I constantly see, but that happens in the private sector as well. I will give you one scam thats is prevalent. Orthotics. There are clinics that will charge your benefits plan 900 dollars for a couple pairs of socks. The scam is, the socks aren't worth 900 dollars, they encourage you to use there clinic by giving you a 500 gift card for allowing them to bill your benefits plan. We all pay for this scam.

Have you ever heard of a government union that when there contract was up say" hey were good, as we can see that the fellow tax payers are struggling, we are fortunate to have good safe well paying jobs". Never gonna happen. Shortly after 2008, 1st responders got a 5% wage increase. There brothers and sisters to the south, like Detroit were doing there job for 1/3 the wage. There isn't a day that goes by when I here the gratitude that the public has for the 1st responders and the work they do. However I have never heard even a thank you from the public sector in Ontario for the gross overpayment in salaries , benefits and pensions they receive. Ill never forget a grade 5 teacher telling me I must have voted for Mike Harris when I pushed back on her in ability to give full attention to all her students in the class. I was stunned, I was 27 and had no idea about politics, didn't even vote. But there she was in all her distinguished excellence, she really told me. My Lord!

When I was kid I dreamed of working in the car factories cause everybody used to talk about how overpaid they were and how they didn't work hard. The auto companies can't confiscate your monies or run massive deficits like the government can. So when things get bad they just pack up and leave. And they take with them the most incredible take base you could imagine. All those taxes those lazy autoworkers paid went right into the pockets of the government. They spent most of there money in the community and they could afford to purchase what they made. This is no longer the case as these companies leave of lower tax and lower wage jurisdictions.

If you can't support North American manufacturers. Why should I not be able to get my taxes done by an accountant in China for 20 dollars. Or maybe once or twice a year we allow a plane load of plumbers to come over and work for 5 dollars an hour, with a smile on there faces. Maybe communities hire there own 1st responders. Or maybe we start having some gratitude for the amazing life we all live here in Canada. It pisses me off to see people who support over seas manufactures, but I will never stop being grateful for my Canadian citizenship. And just because you drive a Korean made car, docent mean I won't buy a cake from your cake shop or use your dental services. But it would be nice if they were aware that there purchases of overseas products affects there fellow citizens. I could have a wonderful cake shipped to me from any country at a fraction of the cost, check out the cost of Dentistry in Colombia as compared to here in Canada. Yes even with flights and hotel its less than half the cost, much less.

Where are the private sector middle class jobs now? The ones that create upward financial mobility. Not in the auto factories, not in the oil patch, not in the service sector(unless you work at a fancy restaurant with big tipping). Are we all supposed to be coders. Everybody goes to school for engineering. When they get out of school there are to many engineers and not enough private sector jobs to support them.

When we run out of a tax base and the tax payers that fund these government jobs, there will only be one thing left to confiscate to keep us all from a civil war and that is the confiscation of government funded pension funds. This happen all the time in great nations. Its happening right now as I type. You think Venezuela could never happen up here. Your foolish and nieve. Our government has allowed our good paying middle class jobs go to cheaper jurisdictions and have basically turned off the natural resource spigot that could have been such a positive for the world. If Canada was pumping out that beautiful oil the way it should be, we could have been a becon of common sense and ability. Our country is to big and bountiful when we are going full force. If this was the case Im certain the we would lead the world in immigration, Choke out dirty manufacturing around the world and surpass the USA as the pinnacle of all places to live. By doing this we might even get other countries on board our COMMON SENSE APPROACH!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead we get, WOKE CULTURE, CLIMATE CRISIS, FORCED GENDER ALTERING CHEMICALS, ANTIFA, CORRUPTION, ANTI VAXERS, RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA, STORMY STORM STORMY, AND SHITTY LEADERS LIKE DOUG FORD AND JUSTIN TRUDEAU.

Socialism, the redistribution of wealth by the government has never beaten Capitalism. EVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVER!

John Taylor Gatto passed away last year but he was teacher of the year in America twice I believe. You can watch his videos if you do a search. He wrote a few books on the American Public Education System. I won't go into too many details. Suffice it to say that wealthy Americans and Europeans do not send their children to public schools. They send them to private schools so they can learn hard sciences, read the Classics, art and literature, and most importantly public speaking.

Our children get taught about climate change. How to put a condom on a dildo. and to question what does and doesn't hang between their legs. All the while laughing at us as we pay taxes and they don't.

Ask anyone...if you had the choice, would you have your child attend private or public school?
Nuff said.

Private school teachers and the private school system are better than the union hacks we have in the public system and the overall quality of education.
So "joining a union" doesn't contribute to better education for students.
It contributes to a culture of a race to the bottom and fat pensions paid for by everyone else. The last thing it contributes to is better education.

Private schools charge big fees so that they have more funds per student than public schools.
If you want better public schools you need to fund them.

Speaking of which, elementary teachers voted 98% towards striking over Ford's cutbacks to schools.

The government's almost monopoly on the basic education has not delivered in Ontario. That is an undeniable fact that even our friends on the left must admit.

Public schools are quite good in Ontario.
Even with Ford trying to underfund them to kill them.
