Who’s dumb ass idea was this? In the 10 years I’ve been living in this city I don’t think they’ve ever done this before. Everyone is trying to leave the city this weekend to go and spend time with family in the suburbs, now they’ve at least doubled everyone’s commuting time maybe even tripled.

I actually heard this discussed on the radio and evidently this is the least busy weekend in October for them to do this.

Please don't shoot me, I am only the messenger.

It’s just that for anything else, I would change my plans to stay in the city for the weekend and go out another weekend. For thanksgiving I can’t just re schedule with family coming from out of town so I’m forced to go through that shit show no matter what.

Even though overall it is theoretically the best choice, it obviously doesn't mean that it will be fair to everyone.

Maybe it would be better to just let the thing fall apart? Maybe shut it down on a weekday?

And not to criticize your memory but it happens every few years (not even counting the ride for heart).

It should be obvious that the reason why they pick a long weekend is to have some extra time to complete the work. Also, there are generally fewer vehicles coming into and leaving the core during a long weekend especially on the holiday Monday.

It’s never happened on a thanksgiving weekend before because it’s a stupid weekend to pick, looks like you have the bad memory. They could have picked any other weekend just like they've always done and no one would complain. I’m not the only one annoyed by this, the majority of people actually in the city are “furious” according to this article .

Also twitter is full of people saying it’s a terrible decision. I think You guys just don’t give a shit because you don’t live in the city and are forced to go through it.

People would definitely complain if they picked any other weekend because that's all that people in this city do. There's always something going on in the city where a highway / road closure will inconvenience someone. Our infrastructure is crumbling because we voted to keep taxes low. So now we have to pay for those short-sighted decisions.

No, I don't give a shit about your precious long weekend plans because I live near the Six Points area of Etobicoke where they are re-configuring the interchange of Kipling, Dundas and Bloor, which has been going for MONTHS with many more to go. Yet you complain about being inconvenienced for a few days and have several options to get out of town like the subway, UP Express and Go train. If you don't like the inconvenience of dealing with the Gardiner or other road closures, noise pollution from streets, clubs, restaurants, airport, etc. then don't live downtown. You chose to live there so deal with it.

It would be FAR worse if they closed it during a normal work week
The volume of traffic is considerably less this week

I live in the city and it's an idiotic decision to close the only highway access to downtown on the last long weekend of the year. They could've done this last weekend or the next just as easily. I like to drive down on Sundays to Bay/Bloor to see a lady or to Queen E to see another- not this Sunday.

Actually I live downtown and use the Gardiner any time I need to drive anywhere. The vast majority of Torontonians are not "furious" as we know that the work has to be done at some point.

And I'll trust the city who actually collects data over people bitching on twitter to decide when the best time is.
