Great News for the Liberals. Of course Baby Scheer will try his best not to utter a word about this fact:

Unemployment rate drops to 5.5%, in the last job report before Canadians head to the polls:

The economy added 54,000 jobs in September, bringing the unemployment rate down to 5.5 per cent from 5.7 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.

The gains were mostly in full-time work, the agency's Labour Force Survey says.

There are 456,000 more jobs in Canada than a year ago, bringing employment up 2.4 per cent.

The rate of employment grew in Ontario and Nova Scotia, but held steady in the rest of the country. Growth was evenly split between men and women of core working age between 24 and 54.

Employment in health care and social assistance accounted for 30,000 of the new jobs. Year over year, employment in this sector has grown by 108,000.

There were also notable gains in accommodation and food services, which grew by 23,000 jobs last month.

"Canada posted another strong overall increase in employment in September," said Brendon Bernard, economist for job site Indeed Canada, in a written statement. "Gains were driven by the more volatile self-employment and public sectors, while the number of private sector employees fell-back after a spike in August.

"The increase was large enough to bump up the working-age employment rate 0.2 percentage points to 74.7 per cent, edging out May as the highest rate on record."

Big gains for Ontario, Nova Scotia
Most of the growth was concentrated in Ontario, where there were 41,000 new, mostly full-time jobs last month, bringing the unemployment rate down to 5.3 per cent.

In Nova Scotia, employment grew by 3,200 jobs, bringing the higher-than-average unemployment rate to 7.2 per cent.

Employment was little changed in other provinces, but there were improvements in the unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador (down 1.6 percentage points to 11.5 per cent) and Alberta (down 0.6 percentage points to 6.6 per cent).

Wages also saw a bump in September. The average hourly rate rose to $28.13 from $27.66, an increase of 2.6 per cent.

"Wage growth was a bit of a positive surprise in today's numbers. Hourly earnings growth rose at perhaps exaggerated rates earlier in the second quarter, but looked to be easing last month," said Bernard. "However the pace reaccelerated in September to 4.3 per cent from a year earlier.

"Should other wage metrics follow, it could be a signal that Canadian incomes are ready to show progress in step with the quantity of jobs."

Reason to 'wait and see' on interest rates?
James Marple, senior economist for TD Economics, said "we're running out of superlatives to describe Canadian job market performance."

While global economic uncertainty stemming from factors like the U.S.-China trade war continues to cloud the outlook, Marple said the Canadian labour market is sending a different signal.

"Ongoing healthy growth, with a wide dispersion across regions, alongside accelerating wage gains should give pause to expectations for the Bank of Canada to follow its peers in reducing interest rates. If anything, this puts the central bank back in wait-and-see mode."

In August, the labour market report found Canada added 81,100 jobs, most of them part time.

This is the last report from the national statistician's monthly Labour Force Survey before Canadians head to the polls Oct. 21.

How come you get so excited for Trudeau and the Liberals presiding over a 5.5% unemployment rate? Should we also get excited for Trump presiding over a 3.5% unemployment rate?

I'm fairly consistent on this. Prime Ministers/Presidents don't have much control over the cyclical aspects of the economy. They can introduce structural changes that take longer to impact the economy. The impact is usually felt after they leave office.

If you think there will be a 2020 U.S. recession, Canada will likely follow us into recession.

To a certain extent, you are correct about "cyclical aspects of the economy". However, certain measure like tariffs and barriers within place along with trade wars are self inflicted wounds.

Do you remember how the right wingers on this Board predicted that Trudeau would screw up the economy etc. etc? Now that this is the lowest ever unemployment figures in Canada, you try to distract by throwing Trump into the mix. But when referenced for all his impeachable offences etc, then obviously it hurts a raw nerve for you and the rest of his cult following. When the April mainly full time job creation numbers of almost 110,000 under Trudeau were better than the almost 80,000 in a full fiscal year under Harper, then you can see the difference as it is night and day. That is especially after Harper actually boasted about those Annual Job numbers!!

Maybe you can merit Obama for that growth in the US economy, thanks to all his very responsible pieces of legislation that is up and running, now that he has left office. So say thank you to Obama, then. But stating that Canada "will follow us", means that you consider yourself to be a US citizen and not Canadian?? Well that explains it all!!

I just think you cherry pick the economic news. You're not the only one here on the Left or Right that likes to highlight economic news when it supports your political affiliation.

Yes, I think quite a few people figured out I am American. I didn't think it was exactly solving the Da Vinci Code. I do like Canada very much though.

PS- I suppose some people in the Western provinces are unhappy with Trudeau's energy policies.

When have you not "cherry picked" with all your Pro Trump posts?? You have failed to highlight the wrongdoings of the Whitehouse and instead voraciously defended it, even when it is obvious how irresponsible that POTUS has been.

You may claim to like Canada, however, we have seen your bitter hatred for the Prime Minister. People out West are very polarized when it comes to the Energy / Pipelines etc. Under three tenures of Harper there was bitter division there. That is why there are court challenges etc, and that will NOT CHANGE irrespective of who takes control of the Government. Easy for politicians to make promises in their platforms!!

I rarely specifically comment on Trudeau. I can't even remember the last time. I didn't even post on the thread regarding the blackface incident. There's the possibility I posted some sarcastic humor for humor's sake.

I think his mother was a MILF and now she is a GILF. <--------humor alert!

If you are going to give Obama credit in the US for their low unemployment, logic dictates that you need to give Mr. Harper credit for Canada's low unemployment.
But you would rather eat your children than admit Mr. Harper deserves credit for his economic policies.

Another obvious driver is the historically low interest rates.
Besides any idiot can spend other peoples money without any concern for the future and Justin has done just that

He has also alienated most of Western Canada, has become an international embarrassment and shown he is corrupt

When was the last time you called out the right wingers like Phil for his constant praise of Trump, be it the Economy or the Stock Prices?? But when I posted a similar thread about Trudeau and how well this economy has performed under his tenure, you have no problem coming out to attack this real fact, and even throwing Trump into the mix. How come there are two sets of rules for you in these kind of instances??

Ah, so now you're saying its not Trump, Trudeau or Harper.
Its Obama that set up the economy to be running so well.

At least Trudeau has been doing much better on the deficit than Harper.

Regarding Obama, this is what Wyatt was inferring from his statement, and I wanted clarification to it from him!!
Harper just ballooned the deficit, but to all the right wingers it was okay, if a Conservative Government does it. What economic policies are you referringto from Harper? As I said, Harper boasted about his economy creating around 80,000 jobs in one year, but when under Trudeau's tenor almost 110,000 mostly full time jobs were created in this past April. It was absolutely nothing to do with Harper. All the right wingers were predicting job losses and plunging into a recession under Trudeau!!

as WyattErp states Another obvious driver is the historically low interest rates.

Whose money did moron Harper spend when he ran a $150 billion deficit?? Canada's debt to GDP ratio is average when compared to all the developed nations. Even the USA's debt to GDP ratio is much higher. But the right wingers on this Board will never accept that fact. This scaremongering will just go on and on. Well Bernier is your choice as all he will do is slash all the spending even if it plunges Canada into a deep recession, just like Harper never accepted that there was one well into his tenure, even though the economic growth and job numbers were negative. Bernier also thinks that there is no cause for concern with regards to Climate Change. There you have your candidate. But you blaming the fact that BC does not want a pipeline contaminating their oceans and waters while Alberta needed a pipeline to ship out their dirty bitumen oil on Trudeau?? No Governments are going to find any easy resolution to it, especially after Harper wanted multiple pipelines being built, and had a decade to do it but failed as well!!

I got it straight.
You're lying again.

Harper inherited surpluses from the previous liberal budgets and turned them into the highest deficits Canada had ever experienced.
You should be backing the liberals, the Paul Martin liberals were the ones that ran surpluses.

It shows that spending on infarstructure, hospitals etc have created mainly full time jobs. The 41,000 figure relates to jobs in Ontario, so let's get that fact right. Moreover wages have actually gone up by 4.3%. It is higher than the inflation rate. Not good news, so what is, then??
