Best ever gymnast - Nadia Comaneci hands down!

Biles may have more medals, but Nadia did a lot of "firsts", she paved the way for following gymnasts.

I suspect that in most sports they keep adding more and more events, meaning that there are an ever increasing number of medals to be had. It is similar to Phelps vs. Spitz in swimming. Same with alpine skiing. Jean Claude Killy only had 3 events to compete in and won 3 golds. They didn't even have a super giant slalom then. There must be lots of skiers who win more than 3 in an Olympics now. It does not make them a greater champion or more decorated than Killy.

Simone Biles is great but counting the number of medals is kind of nebulous since the number of events keeps growing. There is no equivalency with athletes/gymnasts of different times in terms of the number of medals won.

Because you're first, doesn't mean you're best.

The conversation that seems to occur so frequently, trying to compare athletes from different eras. Current athletes in all sports have the advantages of better training, nutrition, supplements, therapists, equipment (not for gymnasts, I assume) and the evolution of humans etc., so it is almost inevitable that they will accomplish things that athletes 50 years ago could not.

If Nadia had the same resources at her disposal that Simone has, would she do as well? If Simone only had the resources that Nadia had in '76 how would she do? I will wait for someone to give me an answer, definitive or not. LOL

BTW, in '76 there were only 6 events for women in gymnastics. And in the entire Olympics there were 198 events, men and women combined. In 2016 there were 294 events overall. I had trouble finding how many women's gymnastics events were in the 2016 games. At least 9, possibly more. There were 18 golds awarded but some were team events so multiple golds were awarded for some events. So this also skews the relative results for most medals won/most decorated athlete.

Nadia had a state sponsored drug program to assist her I'm sure. Just like all the east block countries at the time.

No I don't think I do.

Doesn't matter what era you can't compare drug assisted athletes to clean athletes and I would bet my bottom dollar that Simone is clean.
The testing and scrutiny is very thorough these days
Add that variable to all the other variables that present themselves when discussing athletes from different eras and the result is the same. It is virtually impossible to have definitive answers as to who was better when attempting a direct comparison of great athletes that competed generations apart.

At the end of the day, the black athlete is the best there is. Put on equal footing and access, the black athlete comes out ahead. This goes for everything from combat sport, to golf, to skating, you name it. Frankly, it's a privilege to see what humans are capable of and the black athlete takes centre stage in showing us what is possible.

Only a true gentleman would speak with such nobility.
