For those interested, there is a good analysis of the Leafs by Damien Cox in to-day's Toronto Star.

P.S. It's not that I have so much free time but it is multi-tasking. I do most of my posts while at the same time watching sports on TV. Yes, I'm one of the few people who can watch the Leafs and post at the same time.

I will say it again. I think the poll speaks for itself. Right now its 11 for "Yes Hockey is King" and 10 for other responses. That is extremely close. If I posted this poll 10 years ago, my guess the results would have been 21-0, even if you didn't personally like hockey.

It's not unexpected that the results of a poll of this sort within TERB would indicate this. The vast majority of TERB members are older males. I'm pretty sure TERB has very few members less than 25 years of age. There are some here on TERB that mention that they were alive and recall the last championship win in a 1967 Black & White world. That's 52 years ago. Even if a young boy, 5 years of age recalls that, he would be 57 now.

Now, go out into the City and Province and ask this same question of all age groups, especially 25 or younger. What do you think the answer will be of those that recall the Blue Jays championships in '92 and '93, the Bautista/Donaldson era, a TFC championship in 2017 and certainly have the Raptors fresh in their mind.

Sportsnet, TSN and the Canadian media avoid asking a variation of this same question at all costs because they're not looking forward to any possible answers they won't like. They ask those that they know will give the answer hoped for. That's a mandate from the broadcasting braintrust.

We all know that hockey has it's place in Toronto. It's part habit, part social conditioning, part pure fandom.

The team needs to win though and they haven't done so since 1967, that's a fact. The team with the biggest fan base in it's league has been a disgrace for decades. These particular fans deserve better.

As the TML pattern continues to hold, expect the Blue Jays and Raptors to advance their popularity. The generation of that 5 year old boy watching the '67 final is now diminishing due to disappointment, disdain and even extinction.

Soon, they'll be no one to remember that they ever won anything at all.

You didn't include TFC fans. There are at least 20,000 die hard TFC fans out there. Not all on this board.

If you pay attention to the handles of the posters, you’ll notice that the majority of negative comments are from posters who never have anything nice to say about the Leafs organization or its fans. Having been on this board for a dozen of years I’ve seen many, and if you go on the Sportsnet comments section, you’ll see even more lLeafs haters. After the Leafs loss to Tampa, there were over 800 posts and nearly half were jabs at the Leafs.

Not that the team shouldn’t be criticized, and I myself have done that often but it’s out of passion for my home team and I consider myself a hardcore fan. It’s a phenomenon that doesn’t seem to happen to other major sports team that so many would spend so much time and energy to express their hate on the Leafs.
That's because the Leafs are Kings of hockey in Canada. They garner the most media attention because everyone loves to read about them and loves to hate them. It brings in the ad revenue to the media. It works.

There is a facebook group for die hard Leaf fans that you can only post positive comments, soft/light criticism and any negative posts you get banned. it's kind of refreshing.

The poll is not scientific, it's a terb pool, if you did the poll all over Canada, you find there are way more die hard Leafs fans and just hockey fans. In the rural areas and small towns were it's more conservative and more traditional, they tell you hockey is king. I've been to Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Banff, Sudbury, London, Windsor, Waterloo, Kitchener, Barrie, Kingston, Montreal, Quebec, Halifax, Moncton, Dartmouth and Charlottetown they love hockey.

Which is why the poll is titled "Is Hockey Still King in Toronto?"

Your counting out Leaf fans across Canada, there are more outside of Toronto. Way more than you think. Otherwise it should be title "Are the Leafs still king on terb?"

I'm not really sure what your confused about here.....

We live in the city of Toronto. There are two other major sport teams in this city. The city has grown to 5 million people in GTA and it's extremely ethnically diverse. Hockey has also changed a lot. (less fighting, etc...) Not only has the game changed a lot, but the game has become unaffordable for many parents to have their kids play hockey in the city of Toronto.

We saw in 2015 with the Jays how popular they are, and the Raptors popularity is simply incredible after their success.

In the this city with it's 5 million people, (as opposed to mostly white Sudbury Ontario) are the Leafs/Hockey the primary sport in this city?

Got it??

How many kids in Toronto are registered for hockey vs. basketball?
How many people watch junior hockey vs junior basketball.
Watch the Marlies
Who commands higher ticket prices and still has a waiting list, Leafs or Raps.
Who gets higher TV ratings?
Who gets higher advertising dollars?

There are lots of indicators that say hockey is still number one.

Well this is exactly the debate. I don't have any hard facts, just what I'm observing. A perfect example, I myself have put hockey/Leafs, after Blue Jays/Baseball and Raptors. I can tell you my nephew and niece both play baseball, follow the Jays and Raptors, and don't seem to give a shit about hockey or the Leafs.

I have no idea what the t.v ratings are like, but even that would be hard to assess, because those ratings would be from everyone watching those sports, not just people in Toronto.

It's one of those unanswerable questions. It is all personal perception. Not worth getting into any arguments. (But it is the Leafs. LOL)

Pretty good voter turnout (30). Judging by the names of the voters, it appears 29 are male and probably on the older side. So, this confirms what you said.

(Some of the names rarely or never post in this forum, smart.)

No arguments, just interesting to get other peoples take. Having that said, in another 10 years, I don't even think it will be a debate.

This poll is really redundant. All you need to is to compare the number of posts and views between the Leafs and Raptors “official season threads” and you’d see that on terb the Leafs are about 3 times more popular. Both threads started in June and the Leafs thread has at least three times more participants. On top of that there have been a few more other threads on Leafs topics.

Read post #62 by Don Draper in this thread and you'll see why your response is inaccurate.

Not to mention you completely dismissed the Blue Jays for some reason.
